AMD’s documented 3D V-Cache processor is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D; its Ryzen 9 comparison is the Ryzen 9 5900X. In Tom’s Hardware’s 2022 gaming suite, the 5800X3D averaged 21% higher performance than the 5900X at 1080p. That result does not establish a comparison with a 5900X3D.
Is there a Ryzen 9 5900X3D?
AMD’s product page documents the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, while AMD’s 2022 launch announcement compares it with the Ryzen 9 5900X—not a Ryzen 9 5900X3D. Tom’s Hardware also tested the 5800X3D against the Ryzen 9 5900X. These sources do not substantiate the 5900X3D model name, so there is no supported head-to-head result for the two CPUs in the title.
Which verified AM4 CPU is faster for gaming?
The available direct comparison favors the Ryzen 7 5800X3D over the Ryzen 9 5900X in gaming. Tom’s Hardware measured a 21% average lead for the 5800X3D at 1080p in its 2022 gaming suite. The review’s summary places the 5900X at 82.6% relative to the 5800X3D’s 100% baseline. These are results from that review’s game selection and test conditions, not a universal performance uplift.
AMD’s separate launch claim was “up to 15% more gaming performance” versus processors without stacked cache technology. AMD said the claim was based on its testing as of December 14, 2021, using six selected games at 1920×1080 High: Watch Dogs: Legion, Far Cry 6, Gears 5, Final Fantasy XIV, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and CS:GO. One comparison system used a Ryzen 9 5900X. This company-selected test result is distinct from Tom’s Hardware’s independent 21% average.

Why individual games can differ
An average summarizes a particular set of games; it does not predict every title’s result. Tom’s Hardware reported variation among games. In five supplementary game results, the 5800X3D led in four and trailed in Grand Theft Auto V. At 1440p, the CPU gap narrowed in the review as graphics-card limits had more influence on performance. Your results therefore depend on the games you play, resolution, and whether the system is CPU- or GPU-limited.
What the Ryzen 7 5800X3D offers
AMD lists the 5800X3D as an 8-core, 16-thread AM4 processor, with a maximum boost clock of up to 4.5 GHz, 96 MB of L3 cache, and a 105 W default TDP. Tom’s Hardware’s review table lists a 3.4 GHz base clock alongside the 4.5 GHz boost clock.

- 4.8 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 72 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the AMD Socket AM4 platform, with PCIe 4.0 support
- Cooler not included
The gaming benchmarks do not settle which processor is preferable for productivity work. The cited performance comparison is a gaming-suite result; choose based on the workloads you actually run rather than treating a gaming average as a general-purpose ranking.
Will the 5800X3D work with your AM4 motherboard?
AMD lists support for Socket AM4 and the X570, X470, B550, B450, and A520 chipsets. That list is a starting point, not confirmation that every board will run the CPU without an update. Before buying, check your motherboard maker’s CPU support list and the required BIOS version for your exact board revision.

Which processor should an AM4 gamer consider?
If the choice is between the real Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Ryzen 9 5900X for gaming, the cited 1080p review result favors the 5800X3D. If you meant a “5900X3D,” verify the exact product name before comparing listings: AMD’s documented 3D V-Cache model here is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, and the sourced Ryzen 9 comparison is the non-X3D Ryzen 9 5900X.
