TechRadar reviewer Matt Cabral called it the best version yet after testing on PS5 Pro, but that experience does not establish how the game performs on every base PS5 or on later builds. The game itself remains a punishing survival shooter, not a forgiving action romp.
What makes this the best version yet?
The PS5 edition arrived on November 20, 2025, one year after the game’s original release. GSC Game World announced its arrival on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, and the PlayStation Store lists it as both “PS5 Standard Edition” and “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” The case for this being the strongest console version rests on the combination of platform-specific image options, DualSense integration and the year of patches before the PlayStation launch—not on a claim that every technical issue is solved.

Cabral’s TechRadar review is the hands-on basis for the performance and image-quality judgments here. He spent nearly 50 hours on the PlayStation release, tested both visual modes and played primarily in performance mode on a PS5 Pro. He reports a consistently fast, fluid experience in that setup. That is useful first-hand evidence, but it is one reviewer’s experience, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for base PS5 players or current builds.
PS5 and PS5 Pro graphics modes
Cabral reports these targets for the available modes. Treat them as review-reported targets rather than measured, locked frame rates or universal guarantees.

| Console and mode | Reported target | What the review establishes |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 performance | 2K at 60 FPS | Mode target reported by Cabral; his hands-on review was conducted on PS5 Pro. |
| PS5 quality | 4K at 30 FPS | Mode target reported by Cabral; his hands-on review was conducted on PS5 Pro. |
| PS5 Pro performance | 4K at 60 FPS | Mode target reported by Cabral, who played primarily in this mode. |
Cabral also highlights PS5 Pro improvements to shadows, lighting, reflections and volumetric effects. He tested both quality and performance modes on a 4K TCL television with HDR, but spent most of his review in performance mode. The review does not establish a comparable base-PS5 visual assessment or provide independent frame-rate measurements.
DualSense features make the Zone feel closer
The PlayStation release uses adaptive triggers, haptics, the controller speaker and the touchpad. Cabral describes the controller rumbling with a helicopter overhead, radio communications playing through its speaker, and the radiation detector’s warning ping coming through the pad. Those effects suit a game in which you are constantly listening and watching for danger; they are more than a generic vibration layer.
A beautiful open world built around attrition
The Zone is an exploration-led open world of mutants, hostile people, anomalies and radiation hazards. The official PlayStation Store describes a world where factions, stalkers, mutants and the environment continue interacting even when the player is elsewhere. Your own route through it is shaped by scavenging, story missions, side quests and optional exploration, with the danger of the next encounter always in the background.

Survival is a chain of competing needs rather than a single health bar. Ammunition and supplies are scarce, carrying capacity is limited, and you must manage health, stamina, hunger, thirst, bleeding and radiation. Weapons and gear wear down; upgrades and scavenged supplies help, but do not erase the pressure. That friction gives a successful trip through hostile territory weight. It can also make setbacks feel costly and slow the pace between firefights.

Difficulty and accessibility options
Cabral says even the normal setting can be steep, and some combinations of enemies or circumstances can feel unfair. TechRadar lists Rookie, Stalker, Veteran and Master difficulties, plus Expedition Mode, which uses a more rigid save system. The PlayStation Store lists mono and 3D audio, color alternatives, adjustable stick sensitivity, and options to play without holding buttons or making rapid button presses. Cabral also reports subtitle-size and subtitle-background controls, color-blind modes, interface toggles and an Immersive Mode. Options and labels can change with updates, so check the current game version for the exact settings available.

- A strong fit: players who want a tense, atmospheric open world, like exploring without constant hand-holding, and enjoy scraping through encounters with limited resources.
- A weaker fit: players looking for fast, directed action, low-friction combat or a forgiving difficulty curve. The survival systems and steep challenge are central to the experience, not occasional detours.
Cabral had previously played about 40 hours of the Xbox Series X version before reviewing the PlayStation release. That background gives his comparison context, but the review’s direct PS5 evidence remains a PS5 Pro playthrough.
