To beat a poltergeist in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, find and shoot its moving glowing orb or smoky body. When it lifts objects to attack, shoot the objects to interrupt the attack or get behind solid cover. The available guides do not establish separate electric and fire poltergeist variants or different counters for them, so use the same tactics for the enemy rather than confusing it with electric or fire anomalies.
How to kill a poltergeist
- Locate it. Watch for a moving glowing orb, or track the smoky entity in the Doctorant Zhytnychenko encounter. Game8 also says the sound cue can help you find a nearby poltergeist. Game8’s poltergeist guide and Doctorant Zhytnychenko walkthrough describe these tells.
- Shoot the entity when it is visible. The general guide identifies the moving orb as the target; its color can vary. Keep your shots on the orb or entity rather than spending your ammunition on debris.
- Respond to objects it lifts. If you have time to aim, shoot the floating objects to cancel the attack. If they are about to hit or you cannot line up a shot quickly, move behind solid cover.
- Match your weapon to the distance. For one quest encounter, Game8 suggests an assault rifle at range or a shotgun when the poltergeist is nearby. Treat that as encounter-specific advice, not a universal best-weapon rule.
- Heal and manage supplies. A hit can leave you close to death, according to Game8’s guide. Use a medical item promptly when needed and avoid wasting ammunition in a drawn-out exchange. GSC’s Beginner’s Guide & FAQs likewise advises monitoring health and conserving ammunition and first-aid supplies.
Electric and fire poltergeists: what the names mean
The available sources do not verify that “electric poltergeist” and “fire poltergeist” are distinct enemy variants, or that they need different combat tactics. The official Anomalies guide uses “fire” and “electric” to describe environmental hazards: fire anomalies burn, while electric anomalies deliver an electric shock. That guide discusses anomalies, not poltergeist enemy types.
Bolts can help reveal anomalies or briefly discharge some of them, but that is anomaly guidance—not a method for killing a poltergeist. For a poltergeist, focus on locating and shooting the entity, interrupting its thrown-object attacks, and using cover.
Poltergeist at the Psi Installation
In “A Light at the End of the Tunnel,” Game8’s walkthrough describes a mission-specific option: shoot the nearby explosive tanks to kill the poltergeist. It also lists ordinary gunfire or grenades. These options are tied to the Psi Installation encounter and are not a general tactic for every poltergeist. See the A Light at the End of the Tunnel walkthrough.

#1 Best Overall
The same walkthrough says you can break the installation device instead of winning the fight, but that doing so reduces the mission reward. Use that alternative only if you cannot manage the encounter and are willing to accept the reported reward trade-off.

If the poltergeist is overwhelming you, prioritize cover and survival over forcing shots. GSC’s general guidance recommends choosing a weapon for the engagement distance, keeping track of health and supplies, and retreating when a fight is too dangerous. Reposition, heal when necessary, and re-engage when you can see the target or safely interrupt its next attack.
