Windows Central’s guide counts 16 mutant types in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The safest approach is to learn each enemy’s attack cue, then use movement and cover rather than standing still to trade shots. Small rodents usually do not merit premium ammunition; for dangerous charges and major mutants, a shotgun is a recurring recommendation—but positioning and timing still matter.
These are guide-based tactics, not guarantees: mutant behavior and health have changed in updates. The official September 23, 2025 Update 1.6 notes include several relevant fixes and balance changes. They do not establish the game’s definitive build or balance state as of October 2026.

All 16 reported mutant types at a glance
| Mutant | Main danger | Useful response |
|---|---|---|
| Blind dogs | Pack pressure at close range | Use controlled shots and leave room to evade. |
| Fleshes | Close-range attacks; tougher but slower than blind dogs | Keep space and use controlled shots. |
| Rodents | Groups of larger hopping rodents | Use a pistol to conserve stronger ammunition. |
| Rat swarms | Numbers can overwhelm you | Climb onto a nearby object and use a grenade if available. |
| Bloodsuckers | Invisibility and sudden charges | Watch for the shimmer; use a flashlight at night and a strong shotgun when it closes. |
| Poltergeists | Thrown objects; fiery variant creates temporary fire anomalies | Watch and dodge the throw cue, close distance, then shoot the electrical form. |
| Boars | Charging attacks can knock you down | Sprint laterally, jump to evade, and use a shotgun. |
| Snorks | Mobile, leap-heavy attacks | Keep space and move rather than letting them control the engagement. |
| Psy Dogs | Duplicate dogs obscure the real target | Find and kill the real dog to make its copies disappear. |
| Bayuns | Some encounters use apparent calls for help as a trap | Investigate cautiously; keep distance and a shotgun ready. |
| Zombies | Former humans who remain a firearm threat | Use ordinary firearm tactics; no specific weapon recommendation is established in the cited guide. |
| Controllers | Psychic exposure can disorient you and cause damage | Break line of sight, use psi-block if available, and target the head. |
| Mutated deer/elk | Summons or controls other mutants | Focus on the creature itself while dodging the summoned attackers. |
| Burers | Telekinesis throws objects, manipulates guns, or pulls away your weapon | Use cover; if your primary gun is taken, a pistol from safety is an option. |
| Chimeras | Fast, powerful leaps | Retreat if possible; otherwise change direction after a committed leap and use cover or height. |
| Pseudogiants | Charges and shockwaves | Retreat if feasible; otherwise kite around substantial cover. |
This roster and its combat descriptions come from Windows Central’s guide, which counts 16 types. Its video calls the rare deer-like mutant “Armored Elk”; the article calls it a “mutated deer.” The name varies, so both labels are included here. [Windows Central’s mutant guide]
How to handle packs and smaller mutants
Blind dogs and fleshes
Both can pressure you at close range, but the guide describes fleshes as more durable and slower than blind dogs. Avoid getting pinned: keep room to evade and fire controlled shots rather than letting a pack crowd you.

Rodents and rat swarms
Use a pistol against the larger hopping rodents, which often appear in groups, to save more valuable ammunition. Nearby objects can give you a brief chance to heal or reload. Rat swarms are a different problem: individual rats are weak, but their numbers can overwhelm you. The guide recommends getting onto a nearby object and using a grenade instead of spending many bullets.
Boars
Boars charge and can knock you down. The guide recommends sprinting laterally and jumping to avoid the rush, then using a shotgun. A short object may provide a brief window to reload or heal. Do not rely on an old fixed time-to-kill: official Update 1.6 increased boar HP.
How to counter stealth, ranged attacks, and deception
Bloodsuckers
Look for the shimmer that gives away an invisible Bloodsucker; at night, a flashlight can make it easier to see. When it charges, the guide recommends a strong shotgun. Epic Games Store’s survival guide adds a positioning tip: put your back to a wall to reduce the directions it can approach from, then fire at point-blank range. Update 1.6 fixed Bloodsuckers remaining invisible when they were not attacking, so behavior described in older guides may not match every build. [Epic Games Store survival guide]
Poltergeists
The electrical form moves around and throws nearby objects. Close in while watching for thrown props, dodge when you hear the throw cue, then shoot it with a rifle or shotgun. A fiery variant creates temporary fire anomalies, so avoid treating the ground around it as safe. Update 1.6 also fixed an issue affecting Poltergeist throw behavior.

Snorks
Snorks rely on mobile, leap-heavy attacks. Keep space and use movement to avoid letting them dictate the fight. Official Patch 1.5 recorded a fix for Snorks that could not jump off some isolated areas; Update 1.6 fixed a jump-through-object issue shared with Chimeras. [Official Patch 1.5 notes]
Psy Dogs
Do not waste ammunition clearing every duplicate. Find and kill the real dog; its copies then disappear. Epic’s guide says the real Psy Dog glows when a duplicate is created, which can help identify your target.
Bayuns
Some Bayun encounters can turn an apparent call for help into a trap, but not every such call should be assumed hostile. Approach carefully, maintain space, and keep a shotgun ready according to Windows Central’s advice.
How to survive psi attacks and telekinesis
Zombies
Zombies appear in the roster as former human threats. The cited guide does not establish a reliable species-specific weapon choice, so use ordinary firearm tactics rather than assuming a special weakness.

Controllers
Nearby psi exposure can disorient you and produce hallucinations that still cause damage. Break line of sight with cover, use a psi-block consumable if you have one, and attack with rifle or shotgun headshots. The guide also notes that grenades can work.
Burers
A Burer can throw nearby props, manipulate guns, or pull a weapon from your hands. Use cover and pay attention to the weapon-yank attempt; ducking behind cover can protect you while it happens. If it takes your primary gun, Epic recommends using a pistol from a safe position. Update 1.6 included a fix affecting Burer throw abilities.

Mutated deer/elk
This rare mutant summons or controls other mutants. Rather than repeatedly clearing the attackers it brings in, focus fire on the deer-like target and dodge the additional enemies. Windows Central calls it a mutated deer, while its video uses “Armored Elk.”
Chimeras
Retreat if the encounter gives you the option. If you have to fight, the guide recommends changing direction after the Chimera commits to a leap and using cover or height where possible. Bring your best shotgun. Epic also recommends seeking high ground. Update 1.6 reports improved Chimera combat behavior, so older advice that depends on a particular exploit may no longer work.
Pseudogiants
Leave if retreat is feasible. If not, kite around substantial cover and avoid both charges and shockwaves; use a shotgun, RPG, or PKP when there is a safe opening. Update 1.6 reduced Pseudogiant HP, so older durability estimates may be stale.
How to choose a tactic in the moment
When a fight starts, identify the threat’s attack pattern before choosing where to stand or what to spend. These practical comparisons draw on the encounter recommendations above and the cited guides.
- Pack rush or swarm: preserve room to move; against rat swarms, use height and a grenade rather than pouring bullets into the group.
- Charge or leap: evade laterally or change direction after the enemy commits. Shotguns are frequently recommended for close-range threats, but timing matters more than standing still to fire.
- Invisibility or duplicates: watch for the Bloodsucker’s shimmer or identify the real Psy Dog before spending ammunition.
- Psychic attack: break line of sight and use psi-block against Controllers; target the Controller once you have an opening.
- Telekinesis: use cover and protect your weapon access against Burers.
- High durability or knockdown risk: avoid open ground, use substantial cover where possible, and consider retreating from Chimeras or Pseudogiants.
Updates can change what an encounter feels like. The official support index lists Patch 1.7.1, dated December 10, 2025, and the Stories Untold content update, dated December 17, 2025; those listings do not establish a definitive October 2026 build number or a complete later balance history.
