If S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Anomaly crashes on startup or during play, start by saving the crash information, then check the install, extracted files, prerequisites, renderer and active mods. The right check depends on whether you run standalone Anomaly or the GAMMA modpack; none is a guaranteed fix for every crash.
1. Capture the crash information before changing settings
If a bug-trap window appears, record its details before dismissing it. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mod wiki describes a short log that may be copied to the clipboard and an extended log with a FATAL ERROR section. Its documented paths are old, so use the logs associated with your own Anomaly installation rather than assuming a legacy path applies. The wiki’s crash-log documentation can help identify the information to preserve, but its locations should not be treated as current universal paths.
2. Check that Anomaly is in its own clean folder
Anomaly is a standalone mod, not an overlay to install on top of a retail S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game or another mod. Its project installation page says: “Anomaly is a stand-alone mod. Use a new, empty directory. Do NOT install Anomaly on top of the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games or other mods.” If the folder contains files from another game installation or mod, a separate clean install is a useful diagnostic check.
3. Re-extract archives that may be incomplete
An archive that did not unpack cleanly can leave missing or damaged files. The Anomaly installation guide recommends 7-Zip and warns that another extraction utility may cause issues. GAMMA’s guide also recommends 7-Zip for its large archives. If you are installing GAMMA and the exact file is included in its checksum table, compare that file’s SHA-256 hash with the published value in the GAMMA installation guide. Those values apply only to the listed files and versions; they are not a general test for other Anomaly downloads.

4. Verify the base game and modpack versions
For the GAMMA setup described in its wiki, the base must be a clean, unmodified Anomaly 1.5.3 installation; the guide says older Anomaly versions will not work for that setup. This is a GAMMA-specific requirement, not a rule for every standalone Anomaly install. GAMMA’s guide identifies its Discord installation channel as the most up-to-date source, so check current version-specific instructions there if your files or guide differ.
5. Check Windows runtime prerequisites
GAMMA’s Windows x64 installation instructions list .NET Framework 3.5, DirectX and the Visual C++ Redistributable. If your logs or installer point to a missing runtime, use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable rather than a third-party download. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide recommends collecting installer logs when setup fails; an error code alone may not identify the cause. Runtime installation is not a blanket fix when the crash evidence points elsewhere.

6. Choose a renderer compatible with your setup
Renderer advice in the GAMMA guide is specific to its setup and modlists, not a universal setting for standalone Anomaly.

7. Confirm the intended launcher profile and loadout
GAMMA’s guide instructs players to launch Anomaly through Mod Organizer 2 so the modpack’s required mods load, and recommends selecting the Anomaly DX11 option there. If crashes began after changing mods or a loadout, check that the intended profile is active and that the base installation still matches the GAMMA guide. For standalone Anomaly, do not assume GAMMA’s launcher procedure applies.

GAMMA’s installation guide reports that antivirus software can block its launcher downloads and executables. Check your security software’s quarantine and block history to see whether it flagged a GAMMA file. Before adding an exclusion or changing protection settings, consult current project guidance and verify the file’s source. This GAMMA-specific warning does not establish antivirus as the cause of every Anomaly crash.
