Saga’s Pegasus and the Web3 Multiverse: What the 2023 Announcement Actually Promised

Saga’s Pegasus announcement proposed dedicated, interoperable blockchains for games. Here is what Chainlets, Ethlet, billing and the multiverse thesis actually meant—and what remained unproven.

At Gamescom 2023, Saga unveiled Pegasus, a protocol intended to let developers provision dedicated, interoperable blockchains for games. Saga called those application-specific chains Chainlets and presented them as the infrastructure for a “multiverse” of connected game worlds. It also announced Saga Ethlet, an Ethereum-focused scaling product.

These were infrastructure announcements, not proof that a consumer multiverse already existed. The available reporting establishes Saga’s design goals and later deployment documentation, but not independent evidence of production performance, Ethereum-security equivalence, or the conversion of announced projects into successful games.

What Saga announced at Gamescom 2023

Saga held its inaugural Multiverse Summit during Gamescom 2023 in Cologne, Germany, aboard the Blue Rhapsody yacht on the Rhine. The event brought together traditional gaming, Web3 gaming, entertainment and technology companies, with reported participants including Unity, Samsung, ESL FACEIT Group, The Sandbox, ConsenSys, Immutable, Avalanche and Polygon. Saga also showcased Innovator Program projects including Shrapnel, Cosmic Exodus and AILAND’s shooter project. GamesBeat’s report was published August 25, 2023 and displays a June 18, 2025 update; the summit itself remains a 2023 event.

The central announcement was Pegasus. Saga described it as a way to automate deployment of dedicated blockchains for games and entertainment. Its “multiverse” was therefore an ecosystem thesis: separate games, creators, characters and intellectual properties could remain on their own chains while exchanging assets or messages through supported interoperability systems.

Saga separately announced Saga Ethlet, described as an Ethereum scaling solution combining sidechain-like speed, Ethereum-derived security and one-click deployment. The contemporary sources establish a product direction, not that Ethlet was production-ready, independently audited or broadly adopted.

Saga reported that 224 projects had entered its Innovator Program in fewer than 12 months and that 80% were gaming-oriented. Those are company-reported program figures. They do not mean 224 games launched, reached mainnet, attracted active players or generated revenue. Saga’s event recap and press roundup provide the company’s contemporary framing.

What Pegasus and a Chainlet are

Pegasus is a protocol and infrastructure architecture, not a game or virtual world. Saga’s documentation describes a security chain, a platform chain that provisions and maintains application chains, and the Chainlets where application computation occurs. The arrangement can be understood as a cloud-infrastructure analogy: instead of placing unrelated applications on one shared blockchain, a developer provisions a dedicated environment. That comparison explains the operating model but is not a claim that a Chainlet is literally a cloud server.

A Chainlet is Saga’s term for an application-specific blockchain. Saga’s overview says Chainlets can have dedicated blockspace, configurable economics, selected execution environments and independent upgrade paths. Workloads can also be distributed across multiple Chainlets. Phrases such as “near limitless scalability” and “fully elastic” are architectural claims from Saga, not independently verified performance results.

Capability What Saga’s model is intended to provide What remains to be demonstrated or managed
Capacity Blockspace reserved for one application rather than shared with unrelated users Peak throughput, latency, uptime and behavior during player surges
Economics Developer-configured fees, including a low or hidden player-facing fee Infrastructure bills, token exposure, spam controls and sustainable funding
Customization Choices such as virtual machine, denomination, fee account and upgrade process Security and maintenance consequences of each choice
Security Validator and interchain-security relationships with Saga’s architecture Validator performance, governance, bridges, relayers and application code
Interoperability Connections among Chainlets, Saga’s chain and supported networks through IBC and related systems Compatible standards, liquidity, permissions and reliable cross-chain operation

Why a game might want its own chain

Games can create bursty transaction demand: launches, tournaments, item drops and large player events may produce traffic unlike ordinary financial applications. On a shared chain, unrelated activity can cause congestion and volatile gas prices. A dedicated Chainlet is meant to give a studio more control over throughput, transaction policy, fee sponsorship and upgrade timing.

That control can also separate gameplay transactions from broader speculation. A studio might sponsor or abstract fees so players do not need to acquire a token before starting. However, a dedicated chain does not fix weak game design, poor retention, thin liquidity, distrust of NFTs or tokens, or the practical difficulty of onboarding players.

The trade-off is operational responsibility. A studio still needs wallet integration, account recovery, RPC endpoints, explorers, monitoring, contract security, upgrades, bridges or messaging, player support and a funded billing account. Shared security can reduce the need to recruit a wholly independent validator set, but it does not eliminate smart-contract, bridge, governance, validator or application-level risk.

How the “multiverse” depends on interoperability

Saga’s thesis was that independent game worlds could exchange assets, messages, permissions, characters or other digital objects without moving every application onto one chain. The announcement cited Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) for links among Chainlets, Saga’s main chain and other supported ecosystems. GamesBeat and Saga’s recap describe that technical direction.

Interoperability alone does not create a coherent multiverse. Connected games still need shared identity and asset standards, developer agreements, intellectual-property permissions, compatible game rules, economic incentives and secure messaging. A sword transferred to another game may be technically valid yet unsupported, unbalanced or legally unusable. If one game closes or changes its contracts, portability can lose practical value.

Pegasus versus Saga Ethlet

Product Announced purpose Evidence limit
Pegasus Automated provisioning and operation of dedicated Chainlets, with Saga-based security and interoperability Documentation explains the architecture and launch process; the supplied material does not independently establish performance at game scale
Saga Ethlet Ethereum-oriented scaling combining sidechain-like speed, claimed Ethereum security and one-click deployment The announcement does not establish the exact security mechanism, settlement or data-availability assumptions, production status, audits or adoption

“Ethereum security” is not self-explanatory. Evaluating Ethlet would require the precise trust model, where transactions settle, how data is made available, what validators or bridges can censor or rewrite, and which components were live. Those details are not established by the cited 2023 announcement.

Gasless for players is not costless for developers

Saga’s 2023 positioning emphasized predictable or hidden gas costs and the possibility of using currencies other than SAGA in applications. Later documentation makes the accounting distinction clear: developers pay to provision and operate a Chainlet, while player transaction fees are configurable.

  • Mainnet launch requires a setup fee and an upfront deposit covering 30 days of epoch charges.
  • Recurring billing is based on Chainlet type, validator pricing, capacity and the selected commitment.
  • A developer can designate an account to receive transaction fees and can set a very low or zero base fee.
  • Saga warns that a zero base fee can invite spam attacks.
  • If escrow is depleted, a Chainlet can eventually be halted or removed after a grace period.

Documentation gives an example using 10 psaga for setup and 30 × 10 psaga for daily epoch charges. That is an example, not a universal current price. Saga’s CEO Rebecca Liao was quoted in 2023 estimating approximately $500 per chain per month; that historical estimate should not be treated as August 2026 pricing. Current costs depend on the documented billing model and selected Chainlet type. See Saga’s token economics, payment overview and billing guide.

What launching a Chainlet involves

Saga documents both a Web App route and a command-line route. Exact types, versions and prices change, so developers should verify the current documentation before launching.

Web App route

  1. Use a compatible wallet; Saga’s instructions give Keplr as an example for Cosmos SDK-based interactions.
  2. Obtain the required tokens and open the Saga Web App.
  3. Select the Launch tab, then choose a Chainlet type and version.
  4. Enter the Chainlet name, token denomination, credit period and, if needed, an EVM account.
  5. Approve the setup fee and required upfront deposit.

The full procedure is documented at Launch your Chainlet on mainnet.

CLI route

  1. Install SagaCLI and configure the wallet and Saga platform-chain endpoints.
  2. Run sagacli chainlet list-types to see available Chainlet types and versions.
  3. Select a supported type and version, then provide the project name, genesis account, denomination and fee settings.
  4. Review the required funding and submit the launch transaction.

Saga’s quickstart shows this documentation example:

sagacli chainlet launch SagaOS 0.5.17 <your-project-name>
  --genesis-account <EVM-address>:<token-amount>
  --denom <your-token-denom>
  --fees 2500upsaga

The page cited version 0.4.11 as its latest CLI and used SagaOS 0.5.17 in the example. Those page-specific versions are not a guarantee of the latest versions on August 18, 2026. Consult the current quickstart and CLI documentation.

How to evaluate whether the architecture helps a real game

Throughput and latency

Ask for independently reproducible results under the game’s own workload: peak transactions per second, latency distribution, finality time, uptime and performance during player spikes. Marketing terms such as “high performance” do not answer those questions.

Security and operations

Map what Saga validators provide and what the studio still owns: contracts, permissions, bridges, relayers, upgrades, RPC availability, monitoring and incident response. Inherited consensus security cannot protect a flawed asset contract or unsafe message handler.

Total cost

Budget setup, epoch and validator charges alongside RPC, storage, monitoring, audits, wallet support and player assistance. Also assess exposure to SAGA-token price movements. The 2023 $500 estimate is not a current price list.

User experience

Test whether players can start, recover accounts and transact without managing seed phrases or purchasing crypto. A sponsored transaction is a product decision with anti-spam and abuse implications, not merely a switch that makes infrastructure free.

Ecosystem and exit options

Check available wallets, marketplaces, bridges, liquidity and active players. Ask how assets behave if a partner game shuts down, changes its contracts or leaves the network. A dedicated chain may offer control while providing less built-in audience than a major shared network.

What the 2023 coverage could not establish

  • That Saga’s multiverse had launched as a functioning consumer ecosystem.
  • That Saga Ethlet delivered Ethereum-equivalent security or production performance.
  • That Innovator Program participation converted into mainnet games, active users or revenue.
  • That “gasless” player experiences removed the developer’s setup, validator and epoch costs.
  • That dedicated chains were automatically safer or better than shared chains, rollups, appchains or conventional game backends.

The missing evidence is consequential. A serious comparison needs independent benchmarks, audits, conversion from program to deployment, active-player data, cost per user and failure data during load spikes. None of those results is supplied by the cited announcement material.

Bottom line

Saga’s significant 2023 idea was infrastructure abstraction: make application-specific blockchains easier to provision, customize and connect. Pegasus addressed the practical pain of shared blockspace and volatile fees; Chainlets supplied the dedicated execution model; Ethlet extended the pitch toward Ethereum scaling. Whether that produces better games depends on costs, security, interoperability standards, player experience and sustained communities—not on the number of chains that can be created. Saga announced a way to build pieces of a multiverse, not evidence that the multiverse itself had arrived.
