It combines player features such as battery saves, save states, customizable controls and display options with tools for developers—but the exact features and interface depend on which frontend you use. The project lists versions or integrations for macOS, iOS, watchOS, Windows and Unix-like systems.
What is SameBoy?
SameBoy emulates several Game Boy-family systems, including the original Game Boy (DMG), Game Boy Pocket and Light (MGB), Game Boy Color (CGB), Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Player in GBC mode, and Super Game Boy systems, including NTSC, PAL and Super Game Boy 2. The project describes its emulator as open source and written in portable C. SameBoy’s official site links to version 1.0.3 and the iOS App Store, while its GitHub repository documents the code and available frontends. The pages reviewed do not state when version 1.0.3 was released or establish that it remains the newest version.

Does SameBoy work on Mac, Windows, Linux or iPhone?
The project lists macOS, iOS, watchOS, Windows and Unix-like platforms. Its repository describes a native Cocoa frontend for macOS, an SDL frontend for other operating systems, and a libretro core for compatible software. That means “SameBoy” does not refer to one identical interface on every device: choose the download or integration intended for your operating system and check its feature support.
For the current download and platform-specific options, start at the official SameBoy site. The site links to the iOS edition in the App Store. Availability of a particular build or integration may change; the documentation cited here does not provide an update schedule.

What can you do with SameBoy as a player?
The official feature list includes conveniences for playing and configuring games. Availability is frontend-dependent, so treat the list as a guide to project capabilities rather than a guarantee that every item appears in every build.
- Save progress: battery-backed saves and save states are listed. SameBoy says its save states follow the BESS specification, which is intended to support interchange; check the other emulator’s documentation before relying on a state file working there.
- Adjust the picture and sound: options include selectable palettes, color correction, audio filters, high-quality 96 kHz audio, fullscreen, high-DPI support and multiple scaling algorithms. OmniScale is described as supporting 1080p, 4K and 5K output. Some rendering algorithms require OpenGL 3.2 or Metal.
- Change the pace or rules: listed features include turbo, rewind, slow motion, cheats and real-time clock emulation.
- Use compatible game hardware features: the project lists rumble, local link-cable and infrared emulation, plus Game Boy Camera and Printer emulation. Camera support is limited to Cocoa on macOS and iOS; the SDL version substitutes graphical noise for camera input. Printer emulation is also limited to Cocoa on macOS and iOS.
Which features work on each platform?
The platform caveat matters most for specialized hardware and Cocoa-only options. The official feature page identifies several features as exclusive to specific frontends; it does not establish that every platform has an equivalent feature or control. Check the feature list for the build you intend to use.

- Unlike modern handheld consoles, the GB Color does not have a back light and is best used in a well lit room or under a lamp.
| Feature | Documented availability |
|---|---|
| Game Boy Camera emulation | Cocoa on macOS and iOS; SDL substitutes graphical noise for camera input. |
| Game Boy Printer emulation | Cocoa on macOS and iOS. |
| Other features marked Cocoa-only | Limited to the Cocoa frontend as identified on the official feature page. |
| Joypad support and customizable controls | Listed by the project; specific controller models and compatibility across host systems are not stated. |
A computer gamepad is optional: SameBoy lists joypad support and customizable controls, but names no tested controller models. If you plan to use one, verify that it works with your operating system and chosen frontend before buying or configuring it.
Is SameBoy accurate?
Accuracy is a stated project priority. SameBoy documents hardware-revision differences and reports passing the mooneye-gb, Wilbert Pol and blargg test suites. The repository cautions that some mooneye tests require original boot ROMs.

The project’s feature page also says its automated tester covers almost 2,800 games, with a reported success rate above 99.9% for DMG and CGB games. SameBoy does not date that result on the page, and it is a project-reported figure rather than an independent benchmark. The project does not provide enough detail there to treat it as a guarantee that every game or setup will behave perfectly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can developers use SameBoy?
SameBoy is also intended to support debugging and emulator development. The official materials list a text debugger with expression evaluation, register and memory access, symbols, disassembly, conditional breakpoints and watchpoints, call-stack tracing, tick counting, back-stepping, and cartridge, APU and PPU information.

The repository describes build targets for desktop, iOS, libretro, boot ROMs and testing. Build prerequisites depend on the frontend and operating system; the README lists compilers, make, SDL2 or macOS tooling, and additional dependencies. Consult that README for the build instructions matching your target rather than assuming one set of commands applies everywhere.
What SameBoy does not establish
The official materials cited here describe the emulator and its features, but do not address jurisdiction-specific rules for obtaining or creating game files. They also do not identify a dated independent accuracy benchmark, a release cadence, or a list of verified controller models. Do not assume the emulator includes commercial games or that a particular game-file source or method is lawful in every location.
