samindrv.dll is a Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, scanner minidriver. If samindrv.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest solution is normally to repair the scanner or multifunction-printer driver package that installed it.

Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL. The file is installed through an INF-based device-driver package, which also supplies the configuration, dependencies, and device registration that a loose copy cannot provide.

SaMinDrv.dll, also written as samindrv.dll, is associated with a WIA scanner minidriver. WIA is the Windows imaging system used by scanners and many multifunction printers to communicate with Windows.

Microsoft describes WIA minidrivers as DLL-based components installed through an INF driver package and loaded by the Windows Image Acquisition service. The DLL is therefore only one part of the scanner installation. Replacing the file alone may leave the device unusable because its INF configuration or related files are still missing.
The same filename can appear in more than one hardware package. Historical examples associate it with Samsung scanner packages, Dell multifunction-printer packages, and Windows DriverStore entries such as:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository...
Some installations may also contain a copy under:
C:WindowsSystem32
The location, version, architecture, and size are not universal. A reported older sample may be 32-bit and version 1.0.0.0, but that does not identify the correct file for every scanner or Windows installation.

Errors commonly associated with samindrv.dll
Users report variants such as:
- “The program can’t start because samindrv.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting samindrv.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading samindrv.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because samindrv.dll was not found.”
- “samindrv.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are commonly reported DLL error variants, not a guaranteed Microsoft error catalogue. The wording helps identify the failure, but it does not identify the correct scanner package.
Also, “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that samindrv.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the named DLL and fail because one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible.
Fix 1: Reinstall the scanner or multifunction-printer driver
This is the most likely fix, especially if the error appears while scanning, opening printer software, or launching an old scanner utility.
Identify the hardware
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for your scanner, multifunction printer, or an Unknown device.
- Write down the exact model name.
If you do not know which device installed the file, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. Remove disconnected or obsolete scanner entries only when you are sure they are no longer used.

Reinstall through Device Manager
- In Device Manager, right-click the scanner or multifunction printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when the package is clearly the damaged or obsolete one.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
Microsoft recommends updating or reinstalling drivers through Device Manager. Windows Update is the preferred source when it offers a compatible driver.
If Windows does not find a driver, download the complete scanner or multifunction-printer package from the device manufacturer’s official support page. Match the exact model, Windows edition, and system architecture. Install the full scanner or WIA package rather than copying samindrv.dll into a folder.

After installation:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device if the scanner is not listed.
- Open Windows Scan.
- Select the scanner and perform a test scan.
- Reopen the program that previously reported
samindrv.dll.
The fix worked if the scanner is detected and the previous program no longer displays the DLL error. If the error returns immediately, the old vendor utility may still be loading an obsolete driver.
Fix 2: Install the scanner through Windows
Windows can discover many USB and network scanners without the original utility.
- Connect and power on the scanner.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to detect the scanner.
- Follow the prompts.
- Test it with the Windows Scan application.
If the device appears but scanning still fails, remove the old vendor software from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and install the current driver package for the exact model.
Do not enable random items under Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off to repair this file. samindrv.dll is not fixed by enabling .NET Framework, DirectX, or a Visual C++ feature merely because the missing item has a .dll extension.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security product may have removed a scanner component after detecting suspicious behavior or a false positive.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Look for an entry associated with
samindrv.dllor the scanner package.
Do not restore the file solely because a scanner program requests it. First verify that:

- The file came from the scanner manufacturer or a Windows DriverStore package.
- Its digital signature is valid.
- The path is consistent with the installed driver.
- A full scan does not report an active threat.
If those checks support a false positive, use the available Restore or Allow on device action, then reinstall the complete scanner driver package. Microsoft explains this process in its guide to Protection History in Windows Security.
If the file is in an unexpected application folder, has no trustworthy signature, or is associated with an unknown program, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. Do not disable antivirus protection to force the installation.

Fix 4: Repair Windows system files
Use Windows repair commands when the problem began after a failed update, disk cleanup, system corruption, or multiple unrelated Windows components began failing. SFC may not restore an OEM scanner DLL if the missing file belongs only to the device package, but it can repair protected Windows files and damaged component-store files.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the scanner again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when the component store may be damaged. Its instructions for repairing Windows Update corruption and repairing a Windows image explain these commands.
Repeating SFC without knowing whether the scanner package is damaged can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can make the diagnostic stage easier by showing problems found in its free scan, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the scanner’s official driver remains necessary when the missing file is an OEM component.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run the commands once more after DISM completes. If the error remains limited to the scanner, return to the device-driver repair rather than repeatedly replacing system files.
Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit scanner application can require a 32-bit driver component even on 64-bit Windows. Conversely, a 64-bit application requires compatible 64-bit components. Do not copy a file into System32 or SysWOW64 based only on the folder name.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32normally contains 64-bit system files.SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system files.
The correct location is determined by the installer and driver architecture. Install the package matching the scanner model, Windows version, and application requirements.
To search for existing copies, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

These commands help show what is present, but they do not prove which device currently needs the DLL. A copy may exist in System32 while the active DriverStore package is incomplete.
If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” suspect a wrong architecture, incompatible version, corruption, or a missing dependency. Reinstall the complete matching package instead of selecting a different DLL from a catalogue.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
If the scanner worked immediately before a Windows update, driver update, cleanup utility, or software installation, System Restore may reverse the change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert drivers, system files, registry settings, and installed programs while normally leaving personal files unchanged. It does not replace a faulty scanner with a permanently current driver, so install the correct package afterward if needed. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guide.
Why downloading samindrv.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites are a poor repair method because the file may be:
- Malware or a modified replacement
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- From a different scanner package
- Built for another Windows release
- Missing required dependencies
- Unsigned or incorrectly signed
- Unable to repair the missing INF registration
Manual copying can also bypass driver servicing and leave Windows using an incomplete device installation. The safe sources are Windows Update, Device Manager, the scanner or printer manufacturer’s official support page, and a trusted recovery point.
Do not run regsvr32 automatically
This command is not a general DLL repair tool:
regsvr32 samindrv.dll
regsvr32 works only when the DLL provides the registration entry point required by the command, such as DllRegisterServer. WIA minidrivers are normally installed and configured through their INF package, not by manually registering the DLL.

Use regsvr32 only if the hardware manufacturer’s documented installer specifically instructs you to do so. Otherwise, an entry-point error is expected and the real driver problem remains unresolved. Microsoft explains the requirement in its documentation on registering new functionality.
If an unrelated program requests the file
A game or ordinary application should not normally require a scanner minidriver. If a game, browser, or unrelated installer reports samindrv.dll, investigate rather than copying the file into that program’s folder.
Check:
- The exact program name shown in the error.
- The executable’s installation location.
- Recently installed software.
- Windows Security Protection History.
- The DLL path and digital signature.
- Whether a scanner utility starts at sign-in.
The message may come from a bundled installer, an obsolete scanner utility, damaged third-party software, or an unauthorized replacement. If no scanner has ever been installed, run a full Defender scan and avoid whitelisting the file.
FAQ
Is samindrv.dll a Windows system file?
It is a WIA scanner minidriver associated with Windows imaging-driver infrastructure, but the same filename can appear in OEM scanner and multifunction-printer packages. Do not assume every copy is Microsoft-owned.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not merely because the missing item ends in .dll. samindrv.dll is scanner-driver related, so repair the scanner package first. Install a runtime only when the affected application specifically documents that dependency.
Can I copy samindrv.dll into System32?
No. Manual copying can create architecture mismatches, omit INF configuration, bypass driver signing, and leave dependencies missing. Install the complete matching driver package.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?
The named DLL may have an absent dependency, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged driver installation. Check the active device package instead of copying another version.
