Samsung Galaxy XR is available in the US as a $1,799.99 standalone mixed-reality headset. It combines Android XR, dual high-resolution Micro-OLED displays, eye and hand tracking, Gemini, camera passthrough and optional six-degrees-of-freedom controllers. It is an ambitious premium device for Samsung and Android users, movie viewers and productivity buyers—but its approximately two-hour general-use battery estimate, $249.99 controller add-on and newer XR software ecosystem make it a poor value for casual buyers or anyone primarily seeking the largest mature VR game library.
As of September 5, 2026, the most sensible recommendation is conditional: buy Galaxy XR if its high-resolution Android, Samsung and AI features are specifically what you want; choose Meta Quest for established standalone VR gaming value; or consider Apple Vision Pro if you are committed to Apple’s ecosystem and spatial-video experience.

Galaxy XR is a self-contained mixed-reality headset, not a phone accessory. It has its own processor, storage, cameras, displays, speakers, operating system and external battery. It can run without a Samsung phone, although Samsung-device owners may receive additional continuity features.
#1 Best Overall
The “XR” label describes a combination of familiar technologies rather than a separate category. Galaxy XR can operate as:
- Mixed reality: camera passthrough shows the room while digital windows, games and 3D objects appear around you.
- Virtual reality: a fully virtual environment hides or minimizes the physical room.
- Spatial computing: apps can be arranged as floating windows in three-dimensional space.
- AI-assisted computing: Gemini can respond to voice requests and, where supported, use visual context to help with tasks.
The headset is the first commercial device built on Google’s Android XR platform, developed by Samsung, Google and Qualcomm. It was known during development as Project Moohan. Google describes Android XR as a multimodal platform designed around eyes, hands, voice and AI; actual app, language and feature availability varies by country. See Google’s Android XR and Galaxy XR overview.
Price and availability
United States
Samsung lists the 256GB Galaxy XR at $1,799.99 in Silver Shadow. The US launch began on October 21, 2025, at 10 p.m. ET. Financing was offered at launch, but financing availability and terms can change.

The second and third figures are calculated from Samsung’s listed prices, not official bundle prices. Samsung listed the controller pair at $249.99 and the travel case at $249.99. Prescription inserts are also sold separately, with pricing and availability dependent on prescription and region. Check the live US buying page before purchasing.
United Kingdom and other regions
Samsung announced UK availability in July 2026, with launch reporting citing a price of £1,699. Retail stock, promotions and accessory availability can change, so UK buyers should check Samsung’s current UK store rather than convert the US price.
US availability, prices, launch subscriptions, supported languages and individual apps should not be assumed to apply globally. Samsung and Google explicitly qualify Galaxy XR features by country and region.

Galaxy XR specifications explained
Displays
Galaxy XR uses two Micro-OLED displays, each with a resolution of 3,552 × 3,840 pixels, for approximately 27 million pixels across both eyes. Samsung lists 95% DCI-P3 coverage, a 6.3-micron pixel pitch and refresh-rate options of 60Hz, 72Hz and 90Hz, with 72Hz as the default.
The resolution is particularly relevant to text, virtual monitors and cinema-style video. Fine interface text should benefit from the high pixel density, while Micro-OLED technology is suited to deep blacks and strong contrast. A higher refresh rate can make motion feel smoother, but it can also affect power consumption. These numbers do not mean Galaxy XR has one single 4K panel: the 3,552 × 3,840 figure is the per-eye resolution.
Rank #2
Samsung lists an approximately 109-degree horizontal and 100-degree vertical field of view. That is wide for a headset but still narrower than natural human vision; virtual images will not fill your entire visual field.
Processor, RAM and storage
The headset uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of internal storage. It runs Android XR with Samsung’s One UI XR interface. Samsung claims higher CPU and GPU performance than previous generations; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified benchmark result.
There is only 256GB listed on the cited US buying page. That capacity can become important if you install large games, download movies or store spatial media. Do not assume that storage can be expanded unless Samsung’s current specifications explicitly say so.
Cameras, sensors and audio
Samsung lists:
- Two 9-megapixel forward-facing cameras.
- Four eye-tracking cameras.
- Six head- and hand-tracking cameras.
- One direct time-of-flight depth sensor.
- Six microphones.
- Spatial-audio speakers with one woofer and one tweeter on each side.
Passthrough is camera-mediated video, not optical transparency through clear lenses. Samsung warns that the mixed-reality representation can differ from reality in shape, color or size. It should not be used for safety-critical judgments.
Weight, fit and prescription support
The headset weighs 545g, or approximately 1.20lb, and Samsung lists dimensions of approximately 120.7 × 194.4 × 264.6mm. Comparisons with other headsets require care because strap design, facial interface, battery placement and whether a competitor includes its battery in the headset all affect perceived comfort.

Automatic IPD adjustment supports a range of 54–70mm. Samsung lists support for optical inserts covering specified sphere and cylinder prescriptions. KODAK prescription lenses are supplied through EssilorLuxottica/EyeBuyDirect and are sold separately. Not every prescription is necessarily supported; confirm the ordering range and regional availability before buying through Samsung’s accessories page.
Battery and charging
Galaxy XR uses a detachable external USB-C battery. Samsung estimates approximately two hours for general use and 2.5 hours for media playback. Those are estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. Brightness, refresh rate, passthrough, cameras, Wi-Fi, gaming and Gemini use can all change endurance.
The battery can charge compatible devices when it is not powering the headset. The external design can make replacement or cable management more practical than an entirely internal battery, but it also adds a cable and another object to manage. A roughly two-hour general-use estimate remains a major limitation for a $1,799.99 device.
Wireless connectivity and PC connection
Galaxy XR supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth up to version 5.4. Samsung also promotes a wireless PC connection for casting Steam games and other PC content.
“Steam support” needs careful interpretation. Casting a flat PC game to a large virtual screen, remote-desktop streaming, wireless PC VR and native SteamVR support are different experiences. Samsung’s claim does not establish universal compatibility with the SteamVR library, automatic recognition of every game or acceptable latency for fast-action play. Your PC, Wi-Fi network, software and the individual game all matter.
Rank #3
How interaction works
Eyes and hands
Galaxy XR supports eye and hand interaction for navigating apps, selecting objects and manipulating virtual content. Samsung describes automatic switching between hand and eye interaction, allowing the headset to be used without controllers for supported activities.
That does not make hand tracking a universal replacement for physical input. Precision, lighting, hand occlusion and the design of a particular app affect the experience. Games that need rapid buttons, thumbsticks, positional aiming or physical feedback are more likely to benefit from dedicated controllers.
Voice and Gemini
Gemini is part of the Android XR experience. Google and Samsung describe it as able to understand what the user is seeing and respond with information or actions across apps. In practice, Gemini features may require an internet connection, may vary by language and country, and may depend on the current software version and app integration.
AI responses can be wrong. Do not rely on Gemini or camera passthrough for safety-critical decisions, navigation around hazards or professional advice. Also, Android app compatibility does not mean every app has been redesigned for voice or spatial interaction.
A third-party Tom’s Guide review reported launching Gemini Live with a double press of the power button or by saying “Hey, Google.” That behavior should be checked against the current software build rather than treated as a permanent hardware rule.
Physical controls and Samsung features
The headset includes a power button, volume controls, an external-battery connector, fit adjustments and strap controls. It can be navigated with eyes, hands and voice, although supported apps can still differ in their input requirements.
Galaxy XR also supports Android app windows, multiple virtual screens, Google apps such as Chrome, Google Workspace, Meet and Maps, and Samsung continuity features. Samsung describes answering phone calls while remaining immersed and casting a Galaxy Book display. Some ecosystem features require a Samsung smartphone running One UI 6.1 or later. A Samsung phone is useful for continuity, but Galaxy XR is not reduced to a Samsung-phone accessory.
Galaxy XR controllers
Are controllers included?
No. The base headset price does not include the Galaxy XR Controllers. Samsung lists the pair at $249.99 in the US.
The dedicated controllers provide six-degrees-of-freedom tracking, meaning they can track both their position and rotation in space. They also include directional input, buttons, a thumbstick and haptic feedback. That makes them the relevant option for action, sports and precision-focused XR games.
Are controllers required?
No for browsing, many productivity tasks, media and supported hand-tracked experiences. But Samsung says the dedicated controllers provide the full functionality of the headset’s controller experience. Buyers should not assume that hand tracking is an equivalent substitute in every game.

Can you use an Xbox controller?
Samsung says Bluetooth controllers such as Xbox controllers are not fully supported for Galaxy XR’s complete XR input model. They provide directional and button inputs comparable to 3DoF, rather than the dedicated controllers’ full positional 6DoF tracking.
An Xbox controller may therefore be useful for a flat Android game or a streamed game that expects conventional gamepad input. It does not turn the controller into a pair of tracked VR handsets.
Games and apps
Galaxy XR can run most Android apps and games, alongside Android XR-native experiences. Those are not interchangeable categories:
| Content type | Likely experience |
|---|---|
| Android flat games | A conventional game on a large virtual screen; controller support varies |
| XR-native games | Designed for spatial interaction, room-aware content and tracked input |
| Hand-tracked games | Playable without controllers where the app supports hand tracking |
| Controller-based XR games | Best with Samsung’s dedicated 6DoF controllers |
| Steam and PC games | Wireless casting or streaming; setup and compatibility vary |
| Cloud gaming | Dependent on the service, network, app and controller support |
At launch, Android Central reported approximately 30 purchasable games, but that was a launch-era count and is not a reliable current catalog total. More important than the number of compatible apps is how many provide genuinely immersive, controller-aware or hand-tracked experiences. Early reviews from Tom’s Guide and Android Central described Android XR’s purpose-built software selection as less mature than Meta’s established Quest ecosystem.
Google and Samsung have highlighted or listed experiences involving NBA League Pass, Adobe Project Pulsar, Concepts by TopHatch, StatusPRO NFL PRO ERA, Calm, Google Photos spatialization, YouTube, Google TV, Maps, Chrome and Meet. App availability, promotions and feature depth can vary by country and change over time. Browse the current Galaxy XR and Android XR storefronts before treating any launch list as a buying guarantee.

The strongest hardware case for Galaxy XR may be media. The high-resolution Micro-OLED displays can create a large virtual cinema screen without requiring a physical television, and spatial audio speakers are designed to place sound around the listener.
YouTube and Google TV are part of the highlighted Android XR experience. Google Photos can use Media Auto Spatialization for supported content. NBA League Pass access or promotions should be checked against current terms rather than assumed to be included with every headset.
Samsung’s 2.5-hour media estimate is more favorable than its general-use estimate, but it is still an estimate. Long films may require recharging or a second power solution. Netflix access should be checked on the current device software and regional app store; do not assume that a service’s availability or interface is identical across countries.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Productivity and virtual screens
Galaxy XR can place Android apps as floating windows and create a large virtual workspace. That makes it relevant to buyers who want private screens for documents, browser tabs, meetings or media without carrying multiple physical monitors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle Chrome, Workspace, Meet and Maps are among the natural productivity examples. Galaxy Book owners can also benefit from display casting, while Samsung phone integration can support continuity features such as handling calls. The practical value depends on comfort, battery endurance, text rendering, window management and how much time you can tolerate wearing a headset.
Best Value
- High-Resolution Visuals: Enjoy stunning high-resolution visuals with smooth performance for gaming, entertainment, and productivity
- Advanced Precision Sensors: Equipped with precision sensors for accurate head tracking, hand tracking, and responsive interaction
- Immersive Spatial Audio: Immersive surround sound creates a realistic audio experience that enhances every virtual environment
- Adjustable Comfort Design: Lightweight construction with an adjustable head strap and soft facial cushion for extended wear
- Versatile Applications: Suitable for gaming, movies, virtual meetings, education, fitness, and interactive mixed reality experiences
Android compatibility is broad but not magical. A normal Android app may open as a flat rectangular window, with no spatial layout, hand tracking or immersive 3D mode. Galaxy XR is therefore better understood as a high-resolution spatial Android computer than as a guarantee that the entire Android app ecosystem has become XR-native.
Mixed reality, virtual reality and safety
In mixed-reality mode, cameras show a live view of the room and digital content is placed over it. In virtual-reality mode, the headset presents a fully virtual environment. Samsung provides controls for switching between these modes.
Because passthrough is reconstructed through cameras, it can differ from the real world in size, color, shape and perceived distance. Follow Samsung’s safety guidance:
- Remove the headset before walking near stairs, roads, traffic or other hazards.
- Never rely on passthrough while driving, operating machinery or making safety-critical judgments.
- Clear the play area of furniture, cables, pets, children and other people.
- Keep the external battery cable positioned so it cannot catch on objects.
- Take breaks and stop using the headset if you experience discomfort, dizziness or eye strain.
Samsung’s mixed-reality safety guidance is especially important for first-time headset buyers who may mistake camera passthrough for transparent glasses.
Galaxy XR versus Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro
There is no universal winner because these products prioritize different things. Current competitor prices and configurations should be checked on the official Meta Quest page and official Apple Vision Pro page.
| Priority | Likely fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Android ecosystem and Gemini | Galaxy XR | Built around Android XR, Samsung services and Google AI |
| Mature standalone VR gaming value | Meta Quest | More established native VR ecosystem and lower-cost positioning |
| Apple ecosystem and spatial video | Apple Vision Pro | Designed around Apple devices and Apple’s spatial-media experience |
| Highest-resolution Android-focused experience | Galaxy XR | Dual high-resolution Micro-OLED displays and Android app access |
| Controller-based 6DoF gaming | Galaxy XR with controllers or Meta Quest | Galaxy XR supports dedicated controllers, but they cost extra |
| Controller-free interaction | Depends on the app | Galaxy XR emphasizes eyes, hands and voice; app support still determines capability |
Galaxy XR is positioned above mainstream standalone VR hardware in display resolution and price, but premium hardware does not automatically provide a larger native game catalog. Apple Vision Pro and Galaxy XR also differ in controller strategy and platform ecosystem, while Meta Quest’s advantage is its longer-established VR software base.
Who should buy Galaxy XR?
Buy it if you are:
- A Samsung or Android user who wants a premium spatial computer.
- A professional who values sharp text and virtual screens.
- A movie or sports viewer who will use a large virtual display.
- An Android XR early adopter or developer.
- Interested in Gemini integrated into a spatial interface.
- A PC gamer willing to evaluate wireless streaming for a particular setup.
- Prepared to pay another $249.99 for controllers if your games need full 6DoF input.
Wait or choose something else if you are:
- Looking for inexpensive entry-level VR.
- Planning long unplugged sessions.
- Primarily interested in the largest mature native VR game library.
- Expecting controllers to be included.
- Expecting every Android app to be spatially optimized.
- Expecting universal native SteamVR compatibility.
- Relying on unsupported prescription lenses or safety-critical passthrough.
Verdict
Galaxy XR is a technically ambitious first-generation Android XR headset with a compelling display, broad Android foundation, Gemini integration and useful Samsung ecosystem features. Its value is strongest for buyers who specifically want those advantages for productivity, premium media or early-adopter experimentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor most gamers, the decision is less straightforward. Add the $249.99 controllers to the $1,799.99 headset, account for the approximately two-hour general-use battery estimate, and then ask whether the current XR-native game selection justifies the premium over Meta Quest. Wireless PC streaming can expand the library, but it should not be confused with guaranteed universal SteamVR support.
Bottom line: Galaxy XR is worth buying now for a well-funded Samsung or Android enthusiast who values display quality, AI and spatial productivity more than price or software maturity. Everyone else should compare the current Quest catalog and pricing, verify regional apps and offers, and consider waiting for Android XR’s native ecosystem to develop.
