Choose Samsung Gaming Hub if you already own a supported Samsung TV or monitor, are happy to stream games, and want to avoid buying a console. Choose an Xbox console if you want dedicated local hardware, more predictable access to games, or—in the case of a disc-drive Series X—physical games and UHD Blu-ray playback. They are not mutually exclusive: Gaming Hub can also launch a connected Xbox.

What Samsung Gaming Hub does—and what it does not

Samsung Gaming Hub is a gaming interface on select Samsung TVs and monitors, not a console. It brings together supported cloud gaming services, including Xbox Cloud Gaming, and can surface a physically connected console. The interface is free to use, but cloud services may require their own subscriptions or fees. Availability depends on the device model and country; check Samsung’s Gaming Hub model and availability information for your market.

Using the Xbox app through a supported TV lets you stream games from remote servers without buying an Xbox console. It does not turn the TV into Xbox hardware: the game is streamed, so the experience depends on your internet connection, location, device and the service’s current catalog and limits.

At a glance: streaming through Gaming Hub or buying an Xbox

What matters Samsung Gaming Hub with Xbox cloud gaming Xbox Series X or Series S
Hardware A supported Samsung TV or monitor, plus a compatible controller; no Xbox console required for cloud play. Dedicated local console hardware connected to a display.
Internet Required for cloud play. Samsung recommends at least 20 Mbps; Xbox recommends wired or 5 GHz Wi-Fi for TV play. Internet may be used for downloads and online features, but games run on the console rather than being streamed from Xbox servers.
Game access Most Xbox cloud games require an active Game Pass subscription. Catalog and features vary by plan, region, time and platform. Access depends on the games and services you use; Series X disc-drive configurations can play compatible discs.
Resolution and frame rate Stream quality and available features can vary; do not assume a cloud stream matches a console’s output. Microsoft describes Series X as native 4K and Series S as designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling. Both target up to 120 FPS on supported content and displays.
Storage and discs No console storage or disc drive; games are streamed. Series X configurations shown by Microsoft include 1TB and 2TB, with disc-drive variants. Series S configurations include 512GB and 1TB and are all-digital.

Console specifications above are manufacturer claims, not independent performance tests. Microsoft says prices and options vary by market and retailer, so check current local listings rather than relying on a universal price comparison. See Microsoft’s Xbox console specifications.

When Gaming Hub is the better fit

  • You already have a Samsung model that supports the Xbox app and relevant Gaming Hub features.
  • You want to try cloud gaming without first purchasing a console.
  • You are comfortable playing over a network connection and understand that streaming quality can vary.
  • You are willing to use a compatible controller and pay for a subscription where a title requires one.

Samsung recommends an internet connection of 20 Mbps or faster for cloud gaming. Xbox lists 20 Mbps down for consoles, PCs and tablets and recommends wired or 5 GHz Wi-Fi for TV play. These are vendor recommendations, not guarantees of low latency, a particular resolution or uninterrupted play. Xbox also notes that cloud gaming may have limits involving video resolution, audio output, cloud saves, companion apps and accessories.

When an Xbox console is the better fit

Choose Series X for native 4K capability or discs

Microsoft describes Series X as a native 4K console, with disc-drive configurations available. If you want to use compatible physical games or UHD Blu-ray discs, make sure you choose the Series X configuration with a disc drive; not every configuration necessarily has one.

Choose Series S for an all-digital console

Series S is all-digital and designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling. It is a fit if you do not need disc playback and prefer a console rather than relying on a TV cloud app. Microsoft lists 512GB and 1TB storage configurations. Both Series X and Series S target up to 120 FPS when the game and display support it; this is a manufacturer target, not a promise that every game runs at that frame rate.

Check compatibility before choosing the cloud route

Do not assume that every Samsung smart TV supports the same apps or the full Gaming Hub. Xbox’s TV page lists select Samsung 2020-and-newer smart TVs for the Xbox app, while Samsung describes Gaming Hub as available on 2022-and-later TVs and monitors and provides model-specific qualifications. Those statements cover different things: Xbox app availability does not establish that a TV has every Gaming Hub feature. Verify your exact model and country on Samsung’s local Gaming Hub listing and check Xbox’s supported TV and cloud gaming information.

For Xbox cloud gaming on a TV, Xbox lists a compatible TV or streaming device, a compatible controller, high-speed internet and an active Game Pass subscription for most cloud games. Samsung’s controller support includes Xbox Wireless Controller family devices and other supported USB or Bluetooth controllers, but compatibility can vary by TV and controller revision. Samsung notes that some Xbox controllers may need a firmware update and that Tizen TVs support XInput mode. Its support page says up to four Bluetooth controllers can be connected at once, or two when one Bluetooth audio device is connected. See Samsung’s Gaming Hub controller and device support details.

Can you use Gaming Hub and an Xbox together?

Yes. Samsung says Gaming Hub can launch a connected Xbox console, so you can use the hub as a TV gaming interface while still playing on local Xbox hardware. This makes sense if you want a console for local play but also want access to supported cloud services in one place. Cloud services and their subscriptions remain subject to their own availability and terms.

A practical decision

  1. Confirm your Samsung model and region. If your TV is not supported for the Xbox app, Gaming Hub cannot provide this console-free Xbox cloud route.
  2. Decide whether streaming suits how you play. If you need dedicated local hardware or want to avoid dependence on cloud stream quality, choose a console.
  3. Match the console to your needs. Choose a Series X disc-drive configuration for discs and native 4K capability; choose Series S if an all-digital console designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling fits.
  4. Check the current subscription and catalog terms. Most Xbox cloud games on TV require an active Game Pass subscription, and supported games and features vary by plan, country and time.
