If Xbox app support ends on your Samsung TV, you can still play games from an Xbox console connected to the TV’s HDMI input. The reported change concerns Xbox cloud gaming through the TV app—not the television’s ability to display a console’s video output.
What is ending—and what is not
The Xbox app on a compatible smart TV lets you stream games from the cloud without connecting an Xbox console. In contrast, when you connect a console to the TV over HDMI, the console runs the game and sends its picture and sound to the screen. Losing access to the TV app does not disable HDMI gaming.
Windows Central reported on October 2, 2026, that an email notice from Microsoft said the Xbox app would no longer be supported on 2020 Samsung Smart TVs beginning November 3, 2026. The report attributed the change to Xbox Cloud Gaming technology updates that are no longer compatible with the operating-system version on those models. This is a reported notice, not an independently verified copy of an official Microsoft announcement.
There is an unresolved wrinkle: Xbox’s current TV page still lists select Samsung 2020 and newer Smart TVs. Because the page says “select” and does not reconcile the reported notice with a model-by-model list, don’t assume the date applies to every 2020 Samsung TV—or that every newer set is supported. Check the exact model and country in Xbox’s current compatibility information.

Choose how you want to play

For console gaming on your existing TV, connect the console to an HDMI port and select that input. For console-free cloud gaming, the device and service must both be supported. Xbox lists consoles and other ways to play on its gaming devices page.
How to check your TV and keep playing
- Find the full model number. Check the TV’s settings or its product label, then identify the model year. Don’t rely on “Samsung 2020” alone: support can be limited to selected models.
- Decide whether you need cloud gaming. If you have an Xbox console, connect it to an HDMI input and select that input. This route does not require the Xbox app on the TV.
- Verify app eligibility before relying on it. Check Xbox’s TV compatibility page for your model and country. Samsung likewise says Gaming Hub and cloud gaming are available on select models, with availability varying by model and country; consult its Gaming Hub information.
- If the TV app is unavailable, check another supported device. Xbox’s listed Fire TV products include Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen), Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), and Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen). Confirm the generation and current eligibility on Xbox’s Fire TV compatibility page before buying; device lists and service availability can change.
- Check the controller requirements. Cloud gaming requires a compatible controller. Xbox names official Xbox controllers and other options, but pairing and compatibility depend on the device. Check the requirements for the TV or streaming device you plan to use.
Should you replace the TV?
Not just because of the app notice. If you want to play games from a console, the TV can still serve as its display over HDMI. If your goal is console-free cloud gaming, first confirm support for your exact TV model and region; if that route is no longer available, check a supported streaming device or another compatible device.

Xbox announced plans for its app on supported TCL smart TVs in September 2026 and on select Hisense and V homeOS-powered TVs during 2026. Those announcements do not mean every model is supported or that rollout is complete in every country. Verify the specific model and local availability before choosing a replacement.
