Samsung Gear VR (2017) Review: The Controller Made Phone VR Better

The controller made Samsung’s 2017 Gear VR easier to use, but today it is a retro device for owners of compatible legacy Galaxy phones—not a modern VR recommendation.

As a 2017 product, Samsung’s Gear VR with Controller was one of the strongest ways for Galaxy owners to try virtual reality without a PC. In 2026, it is mainly a retro curiosity: consider one only if you already have a compatible older Samsung phone, can verify the software still works, and are comfortable with a limited, aging platform.

What is the 2017 Samsung Gear VR?

The 2017 Gear VR is the controller-equipped version of Samsung’s phone-powered headset. Samsung announced it on February 26, 2017 (Samsung’s announcement). It is not a standalone headset: a compatible Galaxy phone provides the screen and processing, while the headset provides the lenses, sensors, fit and physical controls.

There are two closely related model numbers. Samsung’s support catalog identifies SM-R324 and SM-R325 as Gear VR with Controller models. SM-R324 is associated with the Galaxy S8 generation; SM-R325 followed for the larger Galaxy Note8 and later supported phones. Sellers may call either one “2017 Gear VR,” “Gear VR 4” or simply “Gear VR with Controller,” so check the model label rather than relying on the listing title (Samsung headset support catalog).

Compared with the preceding Gear VR, this was an incremental update rather than a new optical generation. Engadget’s review described the headset as largely unchanged, with the handheld controller providing the most meaningful improvement (Engadget’s review).

Specifications

Specification Gear VR with Controller
Models SM-R324 and SM-R325
Headset dimensions 207.8 × 122.5 × 98.6 mm
Headset weight 345 g, manufacturer specification
Lenses 42 mm
Field of view 101°, Samsung-advertised figure, not an independent measurement
Headset sensors Accelerometer, gyroscope and proximity sensor
Phone connection USB-C or micro-USB using the appropriate interchangeable connector
Controller weight and power 64.3 g; two AAA batteries
Controller sensors Accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetic sensor

These are manufacturer specifications in Samsung’s product announcement. The phone supplies the display and computing power; the headset has no independent screen, processor or battery.

Design and comfort

The headset is light by the standards of its era, cable-free and equipped with adjustable straps, facial padding and a dedicated Home button. A strap on the headset can hold the controller when it is not in use. Its self-contained phone setup made it easy to demonstrate VR without a PC or external tracking equipment.

In use, the phone’s weight makes the headset more front-heavy than the bare 345 g figure suggests. Fit varies by face shape, and glasses may not sit comfortably. The enclosure can hold heat around the phone; demanding games and video also use the phone’s battery and may cause it to warm up. Lens cleanliness, correct phone seating and adjustment affect clarity. There is no universal session length at which comfort becomes a problem.

The controller: the biggest upgrade

The curved, one-handed controller combines a clickable touchpad, trigger, Home and Back buttons, and volume controls. Rather than steering every menu with a head cursor or reaching for the headset’s side touchpad, you can point, select and trigger actions with your hand. That makes browsing, menu navigation, aiming and simple games feel more direct.

Samsung estimated about 40 days of use at an average of two hours per day; that is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent battery test. The controller uses two AAA batteries. Engadget reported roughly 20 controller-compatible apps at launch and an Oculus expectation of about 50 in the following months; those are launch-era figures, not a current catalog count (Engadget).

COCERKET Smartphone VR Headset with Built‑in Headphones, Immersive 3D for 4.7-7.2" iPhone/Android, HD Aspheric Lenses, Adjustable Focus & Pupil Distance, Advanced Heat Dissipation for Comfort
  • 【2026 New Popular Design】This VR headset is the latest version, offering significantly improved comfort and focus accuracy. The Oculus Quest is too expensive for VR beginners. VR COCERKET is the most cost-effective VR headset on the market, ideal for beginners looking to explore the VR 3D world. It is compatible with almost all models, including 16/15/14/13 Plus, Sony, Samsung, Motorola, and more. It works with almost all smartphones with screen sizes between 4.7 and 7.2 inches. You can easily adjust it to fit different smartphone sizes.
  • 【High Sound Quality Headphones】 Compared to VR goggles on the market, it is the best feature of having high quality headphones. Stereo headsets for a more realistic immersive 3D environment. These headphones feature a 42mm large aperture driver for immersive sound quality and clear footsteps from the movie monsters and enemies. In addition, the headset angle can be adjusted up/backward, so you can adjust it to your best angle.
  • 【120 degree ultra wide angle, 1080P high resolution, aspherical optical lens】Our VR goggles adopt high quality PMMA aspherical optical lens, and adopts blue light cutting function and magnetic radiation protection, reducing eye fatigue. Our VR goggles, 120 degree wide angle viewing experience, you can change your living room into a 3D cinema or view the virtual world without turning the neck too much (don't forget to remove the film inside of the lens when using).
  • 【Multi-function button and compatible with Android and iOS systems】 VR glasses do not require a Bluetooth controller. They are as easy to use as products equipped with controllers. Operation is extremely simple; just press the button on the VR glasses. In addition, the product comes with two data cables for Android and Apple devices, so you can choose according to your mobile phone (Bluetooth controller not included).
  • 【Ergonomic Design and Superior Heat Dissipation】 VR headsets require prolonged use, so they are equipped with safety cushioning materials to protect your nose, face, head, and neck. Even after extended use, they leave no marks. The ergonomic three-axis adjustable headband design ensures comfort during extended use, offering exceptional elasticity and adjustability. It fits snugly on your head, eliminating concerns about slipping or falling off. The front cover features a magnetic attachment design, providing excellent heat dissipation and high breathability. When using a smartphone, heat is effectively dissipated from the interior, preventing blurred vision.

Having the controller does not mean every Gear VR game uses motion input fully. Contemporary reviewers found support uneven: some apps used it meaningfully, others mainly for menus or as a conventional button pad, and some did not support it. Wareable noted this inconsistency in its review (Wareable’s review). It improves the platform’s interaction, but cannot add positional hand tracking or room-scale play.

Visual quality and tracking

The phone’s AMOLED screen gives VR scenes strong contrast and deep blacks, but the image is divided between the eyes and magnified through the lenses. Fine text can look soft, and visible pixels depend on the phone’s resolution. Clarity is best near the center and falls away toward the edges; the fixed-lens design offers limited adjustment for differences in users’ eye spacing. Rendering performance and heat also depend on the phone’s processor and condition.

Gear VR provides primarily three-degrees-of-freedom (3DoF) rotational tracking: turning your head changes the view, but the headset does not track your position as you move around a room. Leaning or stepping forward therefore does not behave as it does in a modern positional-tracking headset. The controller is not a modern six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) tracked controller either. The distinction matters for room-scale games, physical interaction and experiences that rely on accurately tracked hands.

Games, video and software

During its active period, Gear VR’s Oculus storefront brought together mobile VR games, 360-degree video, browsing, social apps, virtual cinema and educational or travel experiences. Samsung promoted titles including Minecraft: Gear VR Edition as examples of the platform’s gaming range (Samsung’s gaming coverage). Its appeal was convenience: connect the phone, enter a curated VR interface and play without a gaming PC.

The headset was particularly well suited to passive viewing and a virtual cinema screen. AMOLED contrast and a large virtual image could make video more absorbing than watching on a phone, while the browser and virtual keyboard offered a practical way to navigate from inside the headset. But 360-degree footage spreads its resolution across a wide view and can look soft; streaming depends on Wi-Fi, and long viewing sessions expose the phone’s heat and front-heavy fit.

In 2026, do not assume the old storefront, downloads, account services or online features are readily available. Samsung’s VR Video service ended on June 30, 2020, according to Engadget’s report. That does not establish that every Gear VR app is unusable: some hardware and archived apps may still work with compatible legacy phones. But installation, updates and online functions are uncertain, so a working headset alone is not proof of a working platform.

Which phones are compatible?

Compatibility depends on the exact headset revision, phone and connector. Samsung’s 2017 announcement listed the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S7, S7 edge and Note5. USB-C-compatible revisions added support for newer models such as the Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note8, with later supported phones varying by headset and software. Use Samsung’s compatibility guide to check the specific combination; USB-C alone does not make a modern Galaxy compatible.

  • Check the model: distinguish the controller models SM-R324 and SM-R325 from older Gear VR units such as SM-R323.
  • Check the phone against the exact headset: physical fit is not proof that Gear VR software will launch.
  • Check the connector: confirm the bundle has the right USB-C or micro-USB connector for the phone.
  • Do not count on the Galaxy Note7: it was recalled and discontinued, and Gear VR support was withdrawn for safety reasons.
  • Do not assume non-Samsung Android phones work: they are not officially compatible.

Samsung’s pages for the SM-R323 and SM-R325 also help distinguish model generations. A used headset can be incomplete: check that the controller and the connector or connectors you need are included.

Setup and common problems

Launch-era setup

  1. Identify the headset’s model number and verify the phone in Samsung’s compatibility guide.
  2. Fit the matching USB connector and, if prompted, install the required Gear VR and Oculus software.
  3. Connect the phone and let the Gear VR interface launch.
  4. Install two AAA batteries in the controller, enable Bluetooth on the phone and pair it through the on-screen instructions.
  5. Calibrate the controller as prompted. Engadget described a setup that included placing it on a flat surface and moving it in a figure-eight (Engadget’s setup description).

That is the period-appropriate path, not a guarantee that setup will work today. Required apps or services may no longer be distributed or supported, and a factory-reset legacy phone may lack components that were already installed on a previously configured device. Avoid treating random APK downloads as a routine fix: unofficial sideloading brings malware, account, compatibility and licensing risks.

If the phone fits but Gear VR does not launch

  • Recheck the phone and headset combination in Samsung’s compatibility guide.
  • Confirm the correct connector is installed and the phone is seated fully.
  • Inspect the phone port and headset connector for dirt or damage.
  • Consider whether required legacy software is missing or no longer available; physical fit cannot resolve that.
  • If buying, ask to test the exact phone-headset combination before paying or buying a phone solely for VR.

If the image is misaligned

Check that the phone is fully seated and that the headset revision and connector are correct for it. A phone outside the intended dimensions, an incorrect adapter or a software calibration problem can all affect alignment. SM-R325 is the safer choice for larger supported phones such as the Note8, but that is not universal support for every later Galaxy.

If the controller will not pair

Check the two AAA batteries, Bluetooth, pairing mode and whether the controller is still connected to another device. Confirm that the necessary Gear VR software is running, then check whether the particular app supports the controller at all.

If VR feels uncomfortable or the phone overheats

Begin with a stationary experience rather than artificial locomotion; low or inconsistent frame rates can also worsen discomfort. Stop when symptoms start and adjust the fit. The phone handles all rendering and display work, so battery use and heat are expected, particularly during demanding games or prolonged video. Aging batteries and performance throttling can make that experience worse; no precise runtime applies to every phone.

How it compared—and what makes sense now

At launch, Engadget reported a $129 price for the Gear VR bundle with controller and $39 for the controller alone. Those are historical launch-era figures, not current prices (Engadget). The proposition was strongest for someone who already owned a compatible Galaxy: the phone was the expensive component, and the headset added a relatively accessible route into mobile VR. It was less compelling if you had to buy an older phone just to use it. Google Daydream View, reported at $79 at the time, was a historical competitor, while Gear VR benefited from the Oculus mobile-VR library then available.

For a new buyer in 2026, the relevant comparison is a current standalone headset, not another phone viewer. A modern Meta Quest offers positional tracking, tracked controllers and a current app ecosystem without requiring a Samsung phone; it also costs more and is a different class of product. See Meta Quest for current models. A cheap phone viewer may cost less, but does not recreate the integrated Gear VR software experience.

Is the Samsung Gear VR worth buying in 2026?

It may suit you if

  • You already own a Galaxy phone Samsung lists as compatible with the exact headset.
  • You want retro mobile VR, nostalgia or a low-cost experiment, not a supported modern platform.
  • The seller can show the model number, controller, correct connectors and working condition.
  • You are chiefly interested in offline media, archived apps or simple games, and accept that software access may be uncertain.

Skip it if

  • You have a recent Galaxy phone and are assuming its USB-C port is enough.
  • You need plug-and-play setup, dependable current apps or social and streaming services.
  • You want room-scale VR, 6DoF tracking, or modern controller-based interaction.
  • You would need to buy an old phone as well as the headset, or the listing cannot be tested and is missing essential parts.

Before buying, inspect the lenses for scratches, the facial padding for wear, and the controller’s battery compartment for corrosion. Confirm that the controller and correct phone connector are present, and test the headset with a compatible phone if possible. Samsung’s support catalog and compatibility guide are more useful than a marketplace seller’s broad claim that a unit “fits Samsung phones.”
