To complete the Sanctum of Penitence in Crimson Desert, first advance Elowen’s Witch of Wisdom request, defeat every Antumbra enemy until the area is liberated, climb the structure behind the central device, recover the one missing pillar segment, carry it to the broken northern pillar with Axiom Force, align it until green leaf effects appear, and finish with a jumping Force Palm. The Core of Penitence comes from a separate optional dial puzzle that becomes available after the cleanse.
Sanctum of Penitence at a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where is it? | Hernand, between The Ironwood and Unicorn Cliff. The north side is the most useful approach. |
| What unlocks it? | Progress in Elowen’s Witch of Wisdom request. Walkthroughs place the request in the second half of Chapter 5, but the exact step is not described identically in every guide. |
| What must be repaired? | One missing segment in the broken pillar beside the main device. |
| Required abilities | Axiom Force to move the segment and Force Palm to install it. A jumping Force Palm is required for the final seating action. |
| What is optional? | A dial puzzle around the device. Solving it releases the Core of Penitence. |
| What reward does the main repair give? | It repairs the pillar and triggers the completion sequence with Elowen. |
| What reward does the dial give? | The Core of Penitence, associated with the broader Kuku Pot upgrade path. |
The important distinction is that the pillar repair and the Core of Penitence puzzle are separate objectives. You do not need to solve the dial to finish the main Sanctum repair, and you should not search for a second pillar component.

Where to find the Sanctum of Penitence
The Sanctum is in Hernand, in the stretch of territory between The Ironwood and Unicorn Cliff. If you are approaching from the wider Hernand area, use the north side of the site as your entry direction. The central device and its broken pillar are the visual landmarks once you reach the location.

The location may appear before the related objective is active, but the mechanism is tied to Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom. If the Sanctum does not progress after you arrive, continue her request rather than repeatedly trying the pillar. One dedicated walkthrough describes the gate as progression through the second half of Chapter 5; another simply says to listen to Elowen’s request. These descriptions identify the same progression thread without establishing one universally named mission step.

In practical terms, reaching the ruin early is not a mistake. You can use the visit to learn the layout, but the repair sequence may not advance until the Witch of Wisdom progression has caught up. This is why a player can see the device, defeat enemies, and still find that no interaction appears to work. Check the quest thread before assuming the puzzle is bugged.
What to do before touching the mechanism
- Confirm that Elowen’s Witch of Wisdom request is active or has advanced far enough to send you to the Sanctum.
- Approach from the north side of the Hernand site when possible so the central device and climbable structure are easy to identify.
- Defeat the Antumbra enemies around the Sanctum before trying to manipulate the pillar.
- Check your current bindings for Axiom Force, Force Palm, Blinding Flash and jump. The exact button can vary by platform or custom layout.
- Keep the central device in view. The missing segment is in the upper structure route, while the broken pillar is beside the device.
- Leave room around the pillar for carrying and rotating the segment; nearby enemies and clutter make the alignment prompt harder to read.
The area is not ready for the repair while enemies remain. Continue fighting until the liberation percentage reaches zero. That zero reading is the practical confirmation that the site has been cleared.
Clearing the enemies first also prevents two common misreads. A missing interaction does not necessarily mean you have found the wrong pillar, and a segment that will not settle is not fixed by defeating another enemy once liberation already reads zero. Treat liberation, quest progression and alignment as separate checks.

1. Liberate the Sanctum
Start by clearing all Antumbra enemies in the Sanctum. Do not leave a straggler outside your immediate path and assume the mechanism has failed; the walkthroughs make liberation the first required state. Watch the area indicator and continue until it reaches zero. Once the site is liberated, return to the central device and begin the search for the pillar segment.
If the percentage is still above zero, sweep the perimeter, raised ledges and approach route rather than standing at the device waiting for an activation prompt. The puzzle begins after the location is considered liberated, not merely after the most visible group has been defeated.
2. Climb the structure behind the device
From the central device, face the structure directly behind it and climb to the upper area. The route uses the elevated portions of the ruin rather than a separate ground-level chest or altar. Broken stairs, gaps in the flooring and rubble are the useful landmarks.
Do not confuse the intact pillar beside the device with the item you need. The objective is to locate a loose, movable section somewhere along the upper structure route and bring that section back down.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use the central device as your orientation point whenever you lose the route. You are looking for the structure behind it, not a distant building elsewhere in Hernand. Once on top, follow the damaged construction instead of dropping immediately to the ground; the relevant search area is connected to the broken upper flooring.
3. Search the broken-stair and rubble route for the single segment
There is one missing pillar segment for the main repair. The exact room-level description differs between published walkthroughs:
- PowerPyx places the segment in a hole at the bottom of stairs reached after climbing the structure.
- Phrasemaker describes it as embedded in rubble beneath broken flooring south of the machine.
These directions point to the same practical search area: the upper structure, its broken stairs and the hole or rubble below the damaged floor. Search that connected route rather than circling the entire Hernand region. If you do not see the piece immediately, inspect the lower edge of the broken flooring and the bottom of the stair route from more than one angle. No official map or primary walkthrough establishes one more precise hiding spot, so the shared landmarks are more reliable than a single room label.
The disagreement is useful rather than alarming: it tells you not to rely on a single compass callout. The segment can be easy to miss when viewed from above, because the hole, broken stair landing and rubble sit at different elevations. Walk the route both upward and downward, look beneath the damaged floor, and watch for an object that responds to Axiom Force. You are looking for one movable piece, not several fragments that must be assembled.

When you find the loose segment, use Axiom Force to grab it. Axiom Force is the ability used for movable objects at this site; ordinary attacks or Force Palm will not substitute for the initial pickup. Carry the segment back toward the broken pillar on the north side of the central device.
Move carefully around the ruin while carrying it. If the object drops or appears to catch on scenery, release it, approach from a clearer angle and use Axiom Force again. The objective does not require a second fragment, a hidden key or a separate activation stone.

Keep the device visible as you return so you do not accidentally take the piece toward another ruin. If the segment seems to disappear, retrace the upper route and reacquire it rather than restarting the entire activity. The reliable sequence is pickup, carry, align and seat.
5. Align the segment over the broken pillar
Bring the segment close to the broken pillar and reposition or rotate it until it sits above the gap. The game signals a correct alignment with green leaf effects. Those particles are the confirmation to look for; proximity alone is not enough.
Alignment can be easier if you stand on level ground in front of the pillar, move the segment slowly and make small rotations instead of throwing it toward the socket. If the green effects do not appear, the piece is still offset or turned incorrectly. Back away, pick it up again with Axiom Force and repeat the adjustment.
Do not rush to jump as soon as the segment is approximately over the opening. The green leaf effect is the useful visual checkpoint. Without it, Force Palm may push against the object without completing the repair, even when the piece looks almost seated.
6. Climb onto the aligned piece and use a jumping Force Palm
Once the green leaf effects show, climb onto the top of the positioned segment. From that elevated position, jump and activate Force Palm so the piece is driven into the broken pillar. A Force Palm used from the ground can fail even when the segment appears close, because the final action is specifically a jumping installation.
PowerPyx lists R3 or Mouse Wheel for Force Palm in its control setup, but that input is not universal. Use the control-mapping screen for your platform and current bindings. The required action is the ability itself, triggered during the jump, not a fixed button shared by every player.
Make sure you are standing on the piece rather than beside it. If the jump starts from the surrounding floor, repeat the climb and trigger Force Palm at the top of the jump. A short repositioning step is often enough; there is no need to search for another socket or carry another object.
7. Confirm the repair and Elowen’s completion sequence
A successful jumping Force Palm seats the segment and repairs the pillar. The completion sequence with Elowen follows. If the pillar remains visibly broken, the segment was not fully aligned or the Force Palm was not performed from the top of the piece; return to the alignment step instead of looking for another component.
The completion sequence is also your confirmation that the main objective is done. You can then return to the device to attempt the optional dial, but solving that dial cannot substitute for the repaired pillar.
Optional puzzle: obtain the Core of Penitence
After the main cleanse, examine the dial-like mechanism in front of the central device. This is an optional puzzle, not a prerequisite for repairing the pillar or completing Elowen’s sequence.

How the dial sequence works
- Stand in front of the device and identify the crystal-like stones arranged around the outer ring.
- Use Blinding Flash on the stones in sequence, progressing around the ring.
- Keep following the ring rather than striking the gaps between stones.
- If you hit a gap, the sequence resets. Begin the ring again from the start.
- Complete the ring to release the Core of Penitence.
The guides do not establish a universal numbered order beyond following the outer ring, so treat the visible ring layout as your sequence reference. The reset behavior is intentional: a failed hit does not damage the device, but it does require another complete pass.
The Core of Penitence is associated with the broader Kuku Pot upgrade path. You can leave this dial unsolved if your immediate goal is only the Sanctum’s main repair.
Because the ring resets when a gap is struck, avoid sweeping Blinding Flash across the whole mechanism. Aim at the visible crystal-like targets one at a time and continue around the perimeter. If the sequence restarts, that is a failed input rather than evidence that the main pillar repair has been undone.

Main repair versus Core puzzle
| Feature | Main pillar repair | Optional dial |
|---|---|---|
| When available | After the Sanctum is liberated and the Witch of Wisdom progression is active. | After the main cleanse; it is presented at the device. |
| Ability used to start | Axiom Force. | Blinding Flash. |
| Object or target | One loose pillar segment found in the upper structure. | Crystal-like stones around the outer ring. |
| Final action | Jump from the aligned segment and use Force Palm. | Complete the ring without striking a gap. |
| Result | Repairs the pillar and triggers Elowen’s completion sequence. | Releases the Core of Penitence for the Kuku Pot upgrade path. |
| Required for the other objective? | No. | No; it is optional. |
This distinction helps with route planning. If you only want to advance Elowen’s objective, stop after the pillar repair. If you are collecting upgrade materials, remain at the device and complete the ring afterward. Neither activity requires a second solution path, alternate pillar, or competing item.

| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The device or pillar does nothing. | The Antumbra have not all been defeated, or liberation has not reached zero. | Clear the entire area and verify the liberation indicator before handling the mechanism. |
| The Witch of Wisdom objective is not active. | The Elowen progression gate has not been reached. | Continue Elowen’s request; walkthroughs place it in the second half of Chapter 5, although the exact step varies in descriptions. |
| You cannot find the segment. | You are searching around the device instead of the upper structure. | Climb the structure behind the device and inspect the broken stairs, hole and rubble beneath the damaged flooring. |
| The segment will not move. | You are using the wrong ability or the object is obstructed. | Use Axiom Force, approach from a clear angle and release and reacquire the piece if it catches on scenery. |
| No green leaf effects appear. | The segment is near the pillar but not correctly rotated or positioned. | Reposition it in small increments until the green effects indicate alignment. |
| Force Palm does not install the segment. | The ability was used from the ground, the jump was mistimed or the segment was not aligned. | Climb onto the top of the aligned piece, jump and activate Force Palm. If it still fails, pick the segment up again and realign it. |
| The dial puzzle keeps resetting. | Blinding Flash is hitting a gap in the outer ring. | Restart the sequence and target only the crystal-like stones as you progress around the ring. |
| The listed button does not activate Force Palm. | Controls differ by platform or have been remapped. | Open the in-game control mapping and use the binding shown for Force Palm rather than relying on a universal input. |
| The repair seems complete but there is no reward. | You completed only the pillar repair, not the optional dial. | Return to the device and complete the outer-ring Blinding Flash sequence for the Core of Penitence. |
A reliable route if you are lost
- Return to the north side of the Hernand site and identify the central device.
- Check the liberation indicator. If it is not zero, stop navigating and clear the remaining Antumbra.
- Confirm that Elowen’s Witch of Wisdom progression has reached the Sanctum objective.
- Stand at the device and look behind it for the climbable structure.
- Follow the upper route to the broken stairs and damaged flooring.
- Inspect the hole or rubble below that route for the single pillar segment.
- Carry the segment back to the broken pillar on the north side of the device.
- Use green leaf effects as your alignment test, then jump from the piece and use Force Palm.
- Wait for Elowen’s completion sequence to confirm the main repair.
- Only after the repair, decide whether you want to solve the separate outer-ring dial for the Core of Penitence.
This route deliberately combines the landmarks shared by the walkthroughs instead of treating one conflicting room-level description as exact. The segment’s connection to the upper structure, broken stairs and rubble is the dependable navigation information.
What completion should look like
The main objective is complete when the loose segment is seated in the pillar and Elowen’s completion sequence begins. The Core of Penitence is an additional reward from the dial and does not replace the pillar repair. If you have repaired the pillar but not solved the dial, the Sanctum’s primary puzzle is still finished; if you have solved the dial but have not installed the segment, the main repair remains incomplete.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you unlock the Sanctum of Penitence?
Advance Elowen’s Witch of Wisdom request. Walkthroughs associate the objective with the second half of Chapter 5, although they do not name the exact same mission step. If the mechanism is inactive, continue Elowen’s request instead of repeatedly interacting with the pillar.
Where is the Sanctum of Penitence?
It is in Hernand, between The Ironwood and Unicorn Cliff. Approach from the north side and use the central device and broken pillar as your main landmarks.
How do you solve the main Sanctum puzzle?
Liberate the area by defeating all Antumbra, climb the structure behind the device, find the single pillar segment along the broken-stair and rubble route, carry it with Axiom Force, align it until green leaf effects appear, then climb onto it and use a jumping Force Palm.
Where is the missing pillar piece?
Search the upper structure behind the device. One walkthrough places it in a hole at the bottom of stairs; another places it in rubble beneath broken flooring south of the machine. Inspect both connected parts of that broken-stair route rather than searching all of Hernand.
Why will Force Palm not install the pillar segment?
The piece may not be aligned, or Force Palm may have been used from the ground. Reposition it until green leaf effects appear, climb onto the top, jump and activate Force Palm. Also check your platform’s control mapping.
Is the Core of Penitence required?
No. It comes from a separate optional dial puzzle available after the cleanse. Use Blinding Flash on the crystal-like stones around the outer ring; striking a gap resets the sequence. Completing the ring releases the Core, associated with the Kuku Pot upgrade path.
Do I need more than one pillar fragment?
No. The main repair uses one missing segment. Once it is aligned and seated with a jumping Force Palm, the pillar repairs and Elowen’s completion sequence follows.
What does the green leaf effect mean?
It indicates that the movable segment is correctly aligned above the broken pillar. If the particles do not appear, make small positional or rotational adjustments with Axiom Force before attempting the jump.
The Bottom Line
Clear the Antumbra until liberation reaches zero, climb behind the central device, recover the one segment in the broken-stair and rubble route, carry it with Axiom Force, align it for the green leaf effect, and use Force Palm while jumping from the piece. The Core of Penitence dial is optional and solved separately with Blinding Flash.
