Build power in complete, repeatable blocks: use Biomass Burners only as a temporary bridge, move to coal as soon as coal and water are available, switch to fuel after your oil-processing chain is stable, and reserve nuclear for a large, steady late-game load. Keep each plant supplied by its own measured input system, connect it to a main bus, and leave a spare connection for the next block. This approach prevents the usual cycle of adding machines first, discovering an undersized pipe or fuel line, and watching the entire factory brown out.

The key efficiency rule is simple: overclocking a generator saves construction space, not fuel. A generator produces and consumes proportionally more at a higher clock speed, while consumer overclocking increases power demand more sharply than output. Use generator overclocking when land or building count is the constraint; underclock consumers when you need to trim demand or smooth an imbalanced production line.

The power progression that scales

Satisfactory has six generator types: Biomass Burners, Coal-Powered Generators, Fuel-Powered Generators, Nuclear Power Plants, Geothermal Generators and Alien Power Augmenters. They do not fill the same role. Biomass is a demand-following emergency and starter source; coal is the first dependable block power; fuel is a high-output mid-to-late-game option; nuclear supports very large, stable loads; geothermal and Alien Power Augmenters are site-specific supplements.

Stage Best use What must be ready first Scaling advice
Biomass Early construction and emergency reserve Collected biomass and a small electrical network Keep it temporary; its output and fuel burn follow demand
Coal First stable factory-wide base load Coal access, water extraction and a dedicated distribution line Copy complete generator-and-water blocks
Fuel Large loads after oil processing Refineries, fuel production, pipes and a buffer sized for the whole block Do not add generators faster than the fuel line can support
Nuclear Very large, predictable late-game demand Fuel-rod production, cooling water and waste handling Build expandable fuel, cooling and waste systems before the reactor hall
Geothermal or Alien Power Augmenters Supplemental generation where the map or progression allows it A suitable site or required items Keep the main grid expandable even when these temporarily cover demand

Plan around capacity rather than the average reading on the power graph. A factory can appear comfortable until several machines start simultaneously, a new production line comes online, or a pump and a processing chain draw at once. Your plant should have a reserve margin and a complete next module already accounted for in the layout.

How Satisfactory power behaves

Biomass Burners follow demand

Biomass Burners are different from the other generator classes: their output and fuel consumption scale with the grid’s demand. That makes them forgiving while a factory is tiny. They do not waste their full potential when only a few machines are running, and they can be kept as an emergency source while a larger plant is being built. The trade-off is attention. You must harvest, process and load biomass, and a growing factory eventually turns that chore into a recurring interruption.

Once production expands, treat Biomass Burners as a bridge or backup rather than the foundation of the grid. A demand-following source is useful for construction, but it does not give you the low-maintenance base load needed to add several automated lines with confidence.

Most other plants should be designed around full block output

Coal, fuel and nuclear plants are best planned as blocks that can run at their intended clock speed whenever their inputs are available. Fuel generators in particular burn fuel at their maximum rate instead of reducing consumption to match demand. That means an apparently idle fuel block can still drain its upstream production. Size the refinery chain, pipes and buffer for the entire generator set before connecting it to the main bus.

Track four numbers before expanding

  • Current draw: the megawatts your operating factory is using now.
  • Installed capacity: the output your connected generators can provide at their configured clock speeds.
  • Solid or liquid fuel throughput: the coal, fuel or rods your upstream system can deliver continuously.
  • Water throughput: the water available at the generator block after pumps, pipes and elevation are accounted for.

Write these values on a sign or in a planning note at every plant. Expansion is safe when the new line fits all four constraints, not merely when the generator count looks large enough.

Biomass Burners: use them as a controlled bridge

What they are good at

  • Powering the first miners, constructors and research equipment.
  • Keeping a small grid alive while you scout a coal site and build water infrastructure.
  • Providing a temporary reserve while a new coal, fuel or nuclear module is commissioned.

How to avoid the usual early-game trap

  1. Group the burners near a clearly marked fuel-loading area so replenishment is quick.
  2. Connect only the machines needed for the current build instead of powering every planned foundation.
  3. Begin scouting and laying out the next generation site before the burners become a full-time maintenance task.
  4. When coal and water can be connected, bring the coal block online first and leave a small number of burners available as an isolated fallback.

Do not judge a biomass setup by its peak nameplate capacity. Because it follows demand, its practical value is flexibility rather than a stable, expandable base load.

Coal power: the first dependable scale step

Know the block numbers

A Coal-Powered Generator supplies 75 MW and consumes 45 m³ of water per minute at 100% clock speed (Satisfactory Wiki electricity reference; Satisfactory GameCore coal-generator reference). The following planning values are simple multiples at 100% clock speed:

Coal generators Total generator capacity Total water demand
1 75 MW 45 m³/min
4 300 MW 180 m³/min
8 600 MW 360 m³/min

The cited references do not state a coal-consumption figure in the same specification, so size the solid-fuel side from the actual recipe and belt rate you have available rather than from an assumed universal number.

Build a repeatable coal module

  1. Choose the water site first. Leave room for the extractors, pipes, pumps and a second block. Water logistics are usually harder to retrofit than extra generator foundations.
  2. Lay generators on a regular grid. Keep equal spacing and a straight service path so the next group can be copied without rerouting the original manifold.
  3. Give the block dedicated water distribution. Use a manifold or split branches that can reach every generator, and reserve a connection for the next set of generators.
  4. Bring coal to the block with spare belt capacity. The exact coal rate depends on your recipes and clock settings; measure the belt or splitter network rather than assuming the line is overbuilt.
  5. Connect the block to a main bus. Put the connection point where another block can be attached without interrupting the running plant.
  6. Test at full intended operation. Watch water availability and generator status while the factory reaches its normal peak. A block that works only while several machines are idle is not ready to be counted as reserve capacity.

Why manifolds and reserve connections matter

A manifold lets a copied block share a recognizable input pattern: source, distribution line, generator row and bus connection. If one row is extended later, you can identify whether the problem is upstream water, the branch feeding that row, or the generator itself. A spare connection also lets you build the next module without cutting into the live line that powers your factory.

Coal expansion checklist

  • Coal access remains continuous at the planned generator clock speed.
  • Water extraction and pipe routes have capacity for the existing block plus the next planned block.
  • The electrical bus has a labeled connection reserved for expansion.
  • There is enough physical space to reach every generator for maintenance and rewiring.
  • Biomass backup is isolated or clearly marked so it can be started without accidentally creating an unplanned load.

Fuel power: high output with a constant input obligation

What changes from coal

A Fuel-Powered Generator supplies 250 MW in the current reference (Satisfactory GameCore fuel-generator reference). Unlike a demand-following Biomass Burner, it burns fuel at its maximum rate rather than throttling consumption to the grid’s instantaneous demand. The result is a powerful but less forgiving plant: unused capacity still has an input cost.

No single fuel-throughput number is stated in the cited specification because the required rate depends on the fuel recipe and clock settings feeding your generators. Calculate the recipe’s output, compare it with the pipe network’s sustained delivery, and include a buffer for short interruptions before you connect a complete block.

Build the refinery and generator sides together

  1. Stabilize oil processing. Do not count a refinery chain that is still being hand-fed or frequently starved as a finished power source.
  2. Choose a module size. Decide how many 250 MW generators your current fuel production can sustain continuously; leave room to mirror the module later.
  3. Provide a buffer before the generator manifold. A buffer gives the line time to recover from transport interruptions, but it cannot compensate for a recipe chain whose average output is below consumption.
  4. Check pipe throughput under real routing. Elevation, junctions and long runs can make a nominally adequate layout unreliable. Test the farthest generator, not only the first one on the line.
  5. Connect generators in a complete set. Adding one generator to a line that is already at its fuel limit can destabilize every generator downstream. Expand the refinery, pipe and buffer side before attaching the next set.
  6. Keep waste and by-products organized. A fuel recipe that produces a useful secondary product can stall when its output backs up, so give that product a destination or storage plan.

When fuel is the right move

Fuel is appropriate when oil processing is already part of your factory and you need a large increase without committing to a nuclear materials chain. It is a poor emergency fix if the refineries, pipes or by-product handling are not complete. In that situation, adding more coal modules is usually easier to copy and debug.

Nuclear power: design the support systems before the reactors

Fuel choices and water requirement

A Nuclear Power Plant can burn Uranium Fuel Rods, Plutonium Fuel Rods or Ficsonium Fuel Rods (Satisfactory Wiki Nuclear Power Plant reference). It uses 240 m³ of water per minute at 100% clock speed. The cited specification does not provide a single output value here, so compare your planned reactor count using the in-game generator readout rather than inserting an assumed megawatt figure.

Separate the three systems

  • Fuel production: mining, processing and rod assembly should be expandable independently of the reactor hall.
  • Cooling water: extract and distribute water before the reactors are placed. Include access for additional extraction and a route that can be extended to another reactor group.
  • Waste handling: treat waste storage, processing and transport as a dedicated plant with its own capacity checks. Do not hide waste belts or pipes inside the reactor room where a backed-up line is hard to diagnose.

Nuclear belongs on a stable, predictable grid. A temporary production spike is not a reason to start a reactor complex; the fuel, cooling and waste systems must all remain healthy during normal operation and planned expansion.

Commissioning sequence

  1. Finish the fuel-rod chain and verify that it can run continuously.
  2. Build cooling-water extraction and distribution with the next reactor connection already reserved.
  3. Construct waste transport and storage before introducing radioactive by-products.
  4. Connect one reactor group, observe the support systems under sustained load, and only then duplicate the module.
  5. Keep the main electrical bus separate from temporary construction circuits so commissioning work cannot accidentally become a factory-wide outage.

Geothermal Generators and Alien Power Augmenters

Geothermal Generators and Alien Power Augmenters can supplement a grid when the map, progression and available items make them practical. They are not a substitute for an expandable main plant: their locations or inputs are constrained, and their contribution may cover one expansion only to leave you short again later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect supplemental generation to a clearly labeled branch and count it in your capacity notes. Keep the coal, fuel or nuclear layout able to carry the factory if a supplemental site is distant, difficult to route or insufficient for the next production line.

Overclocking: footprint savings, not fuel efficiency

Generator rule

Generator overclocking scales output and fuel use together. A 1% increase in clock speed gives 1% more generation and 1% more fuel consumption. You therefore receive the same energy per unit of fuel; the benefit is fewer buildings and less floor space.

Power Shards allow a maximum clock speed of 250% in the electricity reference (Satisfactory Wiki electricity reference). For planning, a 75 MW coal generator at 250% produces 187.5 MW, while a 250 MW fuel generator at 250% produces 625 MW. Those figures are arithmetic from the stated base outputs and do not make either generator more fuel-efficient.

Consumer rule

Consumers behave differently: active consumer overclocking raises power use by more than it raises output, while underclocking can reduce operating power. The practical choices are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use generator overclocking when the limiting factor is building count, foundation area or access to a compact site.
  • Use consumer underclocking when machines would otherwise sit idle, when a line is waiting on an upstream step, or when you need to reduce demand without constructing another generator block.
  • Avoid overclocking every consumer simply because shards are available. The resulting power increase can force a larger plant than the production gain justifies.

Clock-speed decision example

Suppose a coal site has room for only four generator foundations but your next production line needs more capacity. Overclocking those generators can raise their combined output without expanding the building footprint, provided coal and water delivery are enlarged by the same proportion required by the new settings. If the site has abundant room but your grid is short on fuel, overclocking does not solve the resource problem; add a more efficient supply arrangement or another complete block instead.

A modular plant architecture that survives expansion

1. Define the module before placing buildings

A module is a complete unit of generation, input distribution and electrical connection. For coal, that normally means a generator row, a water manifold, a coal belt branch and a bus connection. For fuel, include the refinery output, pipe and buffer. For nuclear, include cooling and waste paths as well as rods.

2. Measure the input side first

Count the actual water, fuel or coal reaching the proposed block while the rest of the factory is operating. A theoretical source rate is not enough if an existing line already consumes part of it or if the far end of a pipe starves.

3. Make the main bus the stable boundary

Put switches, power storage where appropriate and monitoring signs at the boundary between the plant and the factory. A module can then be disconnected for repair without dismantling the entire grid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Reserve the next connection

Leave a capped pipe branch, belt route and electrical connection for the next block. Mark it physically. The reserve is valuable because it turns expansion into a copy-and-connect job rather than a live-grid rebuild.

5. Commission one block at a time

  1. Start the input systems and confirm that the farthest generator receives its resource.
  2. Connect the generators to an isolated test circuit or the smallest practical load.
  3. Run the block long enough to expose a slowly filling buffer, backed-up by-product or falling water supply.
  4. Connect the block to the main bus only after its inputs remain stable.
  5. Record the new capacity and remaining reserve margin before starting the next production line.

Troubleshooting brownouts and unstable plants

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Grid trips as a new line starts Demand exceeded installed capacity or reserve was too small Current MW draw, generator clock speeds and the bus connection for the next module
Coal generators repeatedly stop Water or coal delivery is intermittent Farthest generator in the manifold, extractor output and belt or pipe congestion
Fuel generators consume stock while machines are idle Expected behavior: fuel generators burn at maximum rate Refinery output, pipe throughput and buffer size for the full block
Only the first machines in a liquid line run Distribution or elevation is starving the far end Pipe junctions, pump placement and the final generator’s input
Nuclear plant runs briefly, then stops Rod production, cooling water or waste handling is backing up Each support system independently, starting with the first resource that reaches zero or full storage
Overclocked plant adds less value than expected Input systems were not enlarged with the generator setting Fuel, coal and water throughput at the new clock speed

Emergency recovery order

  1. Disconnect nonessential consumers so the grid can stabilize.
  2. Check whether the failure is generation capacity or an input shortage; adding generators will not fix an empty pipe or belt.
  3. Restore the missing input, clear a backed-up by-product or reconnect the reserve branch.
  4. Bring production lines back in groups, watching the power graph after each group.
  5. Keep a small Biomass Burner reserve available for construction and diagnostics rather than using it to conceal a permanently undersized plant.

Coal, fuel or nuclear? A practical comparison

Criterion Coal Fuel Nuclear
Output per generator 75 MW at 100% clock speed 250 MW in the current reference Not stated in the cited specification; use the in-game readout
Water demand 45 m³/min per generator at 100% clock speed Not stated in the cited specification 240 m³/min per plant at 100% clock speed
Primary input Coal and water Fuel from an oil-processing chain Uranium, Plutonium or Ficsonium Fuel Rods and water
Demand response Plan as a full-output block Burns fuel at maximum rate rather than matching grid demand Plan as a stable, continuous plant
By-products and waste Input logistics are the main planning concern Recipe by-products must have an outlet Waste handling is a separate expandable system
Construction complexity Low after water and coal are connected Moderate to high because of refineries and pipes Highest because fuel rods, cooling and waste must all be reliable
Ease of copying High: repeat the generator-and-water block High only after the refinery and pipe module is proven Possible, but copy the complete fuel, cooling and waste package
Best factory stage First automated expansion Established oil processing Large, predictable late-game demand

The cheapest input is not automatically the best choice. A fuel plant can provide more capacity per generator but require a difficult recipe chain; a nuclear plant can support enormous demand but adds cooling and waste systems that must be maintained. Choose the block that matches the logistics your factory can already run continuously.

A repeatable expansion routine

  1. Measure before building: record current draw, installed capacity, resource throughput and water throughput.
  2. Pick the next generation tier: biomass for a temporary bridge, coal for the first dependable blocks, fuel after oil processing, and nuclear only when the support systems can be stable.
  3. Reserve the site: include room for the next module, maintenance paths and input expansion.
  4. Build inputs first: water extraction, belts, refineries, pipes, buffers and waste routes should be ready before generators are counted.
  5. Build a complete block: do not connect half a module and assume the rest can be added later without changing the load.
  6. Test the far end: verify the last generator receives its input during a normal factory peak.
  7. Connect to the main bus: use a labeled branch and leave the next branch available.
  8. Recalculate headroom: update your four tracked numbers before powering the next production line.
  9. Use clock speeds deliberately: overclock generators for footprint, underclock consumers for demand control, and never treat overclocking as a fuel-saving measure.

This routine turns power from a one-time construction project into a controlled logistics system. Every new block has a known input requirement, a defined electrical boundary and a clear test before it is allowed to carry more of the factory.
