scanintf.dll is the Canon ScanGear Scanner Interface, not a Windows system DLL. When Windows reports that scanintf.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the complete Canon scanner package for the exact scanner model.
Do not download this DLL by itself and copy it into System32. Older Canon scanner software installs the file as part of a model-specific ScanGear or TWAIN package, often beneath a folder under C:Windowstwain_32. The correct location, architecture, and supporting files depend on the scanner.

That does not mean every Canon scanner uses the same subfolder, filename version, or architecture. Do not overwrite files in that directory manually.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because scanintf.dll was not found.”
- “The file scanintf.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading scanintf.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load scanintf.dll.”
- A Canon ScanGear error stating that a required file is missing or corrupted.
The phrase “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that scanintf.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load another dependency, locate the correct TWAIN directory, or use a driver with the wrong architecture.
The most common causes are:
- A damaged or incomplete Canon driver installation.
- The wrong Canon package for the scanner model.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility mismatch.
- An old scanner that is no longer supported by the current Windows version.
- Antivirus software removing or quarantining a Canon file.
- A TWAIN source or application compatibility problem.
- Windows component corruption interfering with the Canon installer.
Fix 1: Identify the exact Canon model first
Do not begin by searching for the DLL filename. Begin with the hardware.
Find the model
Check the label on the scanner or multifunction printer. You can also use Windows:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers, depending on the hardware.
- Note the complete model name.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider, date, and version shown there.
If the device is not listed:
- In Device Manager, select View.
- Choose Show hidden devices.
- Check Other devices for an unknown scanner or imaging device.
- Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
The model is important because ScanGear CS, ScanGear MP, ScanGear MF, and newer Canon scanning packages are not interchangeable. A package for a similar CanoScan or PIXMA model may install successfully while leaving the active scanner unable to load its interface.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete Canon scanner package
This is the primary repair for scanintf.dll.
Use Canon’s official support portal, locate the exact product page, and select the Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver package that matches the installed system. Look for the scanner driver, ScanGear package, MP Drivers, or the complete Canon software package listed for that model.
Remove the existing package
- Disconnect the scanner if it is connected by USB.
- Close Canon utilities, Acrobat, Photoshop, and other scanning applications.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, look for Canon entries containing terms such as ScanGear, Scanner Driver, MP Drivers, or the scanner model.
- Select the relevant Canon scanner software.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the Canon uninstaller is not listed, remove the device through Device Manager:

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the scanner.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete random files from C:Windowstwain_32. Multiple older scanners can have separate model folders, and manual deletion can leave the driver database and application settings inconsistent.
Install the correct package
- Download the driver from Canon’s official product support page.
- Confirm that the selected model exactly matches the scanner.
- Confirm that the package supports your installed Windows release.
- Run the installer.
- If Windows asks for permission, select Yes.
- Connect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Complete the setup.
- Restart Windows again.
- Open Canon’s scanning utility before testing Acrobat or another third-party program.
A successful repair usually means the Canon utility opens without the DLL message and can produce a preview or scan. Once that works, select the Canon TWAIN source inside the affected application and test again.
When driver pages offer several packages, identifying the correct one manually can mean comparing model names, Windows releases, architecture, and old package descriptions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Reinstalling the exact Canon package remains the definitive fix for a scanner-specific scanintf.dll error.
Fix 3: Check Windows and application architecture
A 32-bit TWAIN application may need a 32-bit Canon scanner interface even when Windows itself is 64-bit. The correct combination depends on the Canon package and the application that is trying to scan.
Check the Windows architecture
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Check the affected application
For many desktop applications:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Check its publisher details or documentation for architecture information.
If the Canon utility works but Acrobat or Photoshop fails, the scanner driver may be installed correctly and the problem may be limited to the application’s TWAIN support or architecture.
Try these checks:
- Open the affected application.
- Open its Import, Acquire, or Scan command.
- Look for a scanner-source selector.
- Select the exact Canon scanner rather than a stale or duplicate entry.
- If the application offers both WIA and TWAIN sources, test the Canon TWAIN source.
- Test from a different TWAIN-compatible application.
Canon ScanGear cannot start from an application that does not support TWAIN. If Canon’s own utility works but the third-party application does not, reinstalling scanintf.dll separately is unlikely to help.
Fix 4: Check Canon support status for an old scanner
Some older CanoScan devices were designed for Windows versions that are no longer current. A scanner may still appear in Device Manager while lacking a compatible ScanGear package for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
On the Canon product page, check:
- Whether the model is marked retired.
- Which Windows versions are listed.
- Whether a current scanner driver is available.
- Whether the download is for the exact model rather than a related device.
If Canon provides no compatible package, repeated DLL replacement will not create a supported driver. Possible practical choices are using the scanner with an older supported Windows environment, replacing it with a current scanner, or using a supported multifunction device.

Do not assume that a package labeled ScanGear will work with every Canon scanner. ScanGear CS and other Canon ScanGear variants are model and package specific.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a scanner component after an installation or update. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the scanning failure began.
- Expand any entry that mentions the Canon installer or
scanintf.dll. - Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from a genuine Canon installation and the installer source is trustworthy.
- If the origin is uncertain, leave it quarantined.
- Download a clean package from Canon and reinstall it.
After reinstalling, run a Windows Security scan. If malware is suspected, do not restore the quarantined DLL. A clean Canon installer is safer than manually recovering an isolated file.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when necessary
scanintf.dll is not normally a protected Windows component. System File Checker will not usually restore a missing Canon DLL. DISM and SFC are useful when Windows itself is damaged or when the Canon installer repeatedly fails because system components are corrupted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore running repairs:
- Save open work.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Restart the computer.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Reinstall the Canon package again and test the scanner.
If DISM reports that it cannot repair the image, install pending updates and restart before trying again. If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, repeat the process after DISM completes or investigate the Windows installation separately.
Running these commands repeatedly will not substitute for the correct Canon driver. Outbyte PC Repair can show what Windows repair issues need attention, while its free scan identifies problems and repair through the full version is optional. For this file, the Canon installer remains the definitive repair because scanintf.dll belongs to ScanGear rather than Windows.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
If scanning worked until a recent driver installation, Windows update, or security-software change, System Restore may reverse the change.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you run regsvr32 scanintf.dll
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. There is no authoritative Canon instruction requiring users to manually register scanintf.dll.
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 scanintf.dll
If a Canon installer specifically instructs you to register a component, follow that package’s instructions and use the matching 32-bit or 64-bit version of regsvr32. Otherwise, reinstall the driver package. A registration error generally indicates the wrong file, wrong architecture, missing dependency, or a component that was never intended to be registered manually.
What not to do
Do not download scanintf.dll separately
Random DLL download sites can provide the wrong version, wrong architecture, incomplete dependencies, or a modified file. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or a random Canon folder can also make diagnosis harder.
The safe source is the official Canon support page for the exact scanner model, using the complete scanner driver or ScanGear package.
Do not install Visual C++ automatically
scanintf.dll is identified as a Canon scanner-interface component, not a Visual C++ runtime file. Installing a runtime may be appropriate only when a separate error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime dependency. It is not the first-line fix for this DLL.
Do not enable random Windows Features
Turning on .NET Framework, legacy components, or other Windows Features will not normally restore a Canon TWAIN driver. Use Windows Features only when a specific Canon installer or application requirement identifies the feature.

Do not install every driver architecture
Install the architecture required by the exact Canon package and scanning workflow. Installing unrelated 32-bit and 64-bit packages can create duplicate TWAIN sources without fixing the active one.

FAQ
Is scanintf.dll part of Windows?
No. It is the ScanGear Scanner Interface associated with Canon scanner software.
Where should scanintf.dll be installed?
Older Canon installations commonly place it in a model-specific directory beneath C:Windowstwain_32. The exact folder depends on the scanner and package.
Can I copy the DLL into System32?
No. That is not the normal installation method and may create an architecture or dependency mismatch.
Does regsvr32 fix scanintf.dll?
Usually not. The Canon installer should place and configure the component. Manual registration is not a general repair.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does Acrobat report the error?
Acrobat may be attempting to use the Canon TWAIN interface. A damaged driver, wrong TWAIN source, unsupported scanner, or architecture mismatch can prevent the interface from loading.
What if the DLL exists but still will not load?
The missing item may be a dependency, the file may be corrupted, or the active application may be using the wrong architecture or TWAIN path. Reinstall the complete Canon package rather than replacing only the visible DLL.
Will SFC restore the file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It may help the Canon installer run if Windows is damaged, but it does not replace the Canon scanner package.
What is the safest fix on Windows 11 or Windows 10?
Use the exact Canon product page, install the compatible scanner package, and verify that the scanner and application workflow are supported. If Canon has retired the device and provides no compatible driver, a standalone DLL cannot make the old package fully supported.
