sccex.dll is a real application DLL, and sccex.dll errors usually mean that a program using Outside In Viewer Technology has an incomplete, damaged, or mismatched installation.
The file is described as SCC Export and belongs to the Outside In document-processing component historically associated with Inso Corporation. It is not a normal Windows system file. The correct repair is usually to fix the application that installed it, not to download a replacement DLL and copy it into a Windows folder.

What sccex.dll does
Outside In Technology is an SDK used by applications that extract, convert, view, search, or export content from documents and other files. sccex.dll is the Export module used by several Outside In export products.
The exact application installed on your PC cannot be identified from the filename alone. It may be bundled inside a business application, document viewer, email or content-management program, or another utility that embeds Outside In.

A healthy installation normally keeps sccex.dll beside the application or inside that product’s component directory. It commonly works with other Outside In files, including libraries with names such as sccda.dll, sccfi.dll, sccch.dll, and sccvw.dll. The complete matching set matters.
Do not assume that every copy of sccex.dll has the same version, size, or architecture. Different applications can ship different Outside In builds.
Find the application that owns the file
Before changing Windows, identify the program that displays the error.
- Note the executable named in the error window, if one appears.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Search for the program that failed to start.
- Check the application’s installation folder if you know it.
- Search for
sccex.dllin File Explorer and inspect its full path.
A path inside Program Files, Program Files (x86), or a clearly named vendor folder is more useful than the filename by itself. If the file appears in a temporary folder, an unfamiliar startup location, or a random user-profile directory, do not restore or execute it automatically. Scan the file and inspect its digital signature first.
To inspect the file:
- Right-click
sccex.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open Details to view the description, publisher, and file information.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab is present.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
A missing signature is not by itself proof of malware, but an unexpected location or unknown publisher deserves caution.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
This is the safest and most likely fix. A repair restores missing application files while preserving the existing installation when the vendor supports that feature.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application that fails with the
sccex.dllmessage. - Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the affected application again.
Some desktop programs show their repair option in Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
If the program opens normally afterward, the repair restored the missing Outside In files or corrected the application’s configuration.
If there is no repair option, download the installer from the application publisher’s official support or download page. Do not download sccex.dll separately. Run the installer, choose Repair, Modify, or Install, and restart Windows when prompted.
Reinstall the host program
If repair fails, reinstall the application.
- Save any application-specific work or settings.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose the three-dot menu.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again using the publisher’s official installer.
- Launch it once after installation completes.
A clean reinstall is more effective than replacing one DLL because it restores the matching Outside In libraries, filters, configuration files, and registry entries used by the host program.

If the program came from an organization, contact its administrator before uninstalling it. Some business applications use a company-specific installer or license system.
Run the program with administrator permissions
This is not a replacement for repair, but it can help if the program cannot read its own installation directory.

- Open the application’s Start menu entry.
- Right-click it.
- Select More > Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Test the operation that previously failed.
If this works only when elevated, the application may have incorrect folder permissions or an outdated design. Repair or reinstall it rather than permanently running every application as administrator.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine one DLL while leaving the rest of the application installed. That produces a missing-file message even when the original installation was valid.
Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the affected application or
sccex.dll. - Review the detected file path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The application came from a trusted publisher.
- The file was inside the application’s expected installation directory.
- The application was installed from an official source.
- The security alert is understood and appears to be a false positive.
After restoring it, update or reinstall the host application so the complete package is placed back correctly. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make the error disappear.
If the file keeps returning to quarantine, leave it isolated and contact the application vendor. A repeated detection may indicate a modified, outdated, or compromised installation.

A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run many 32-bit programs, but the program and its DLL dependencies must still match.
Microsoft explains the 32-bit and 64-bit rules in its documentation on running 32-bit applications.
To check the application:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Start the affected program if it opens far enough to appear.
- Right-click the Task Manager column headings.
- Enable Platform or Architecture, if available.
- Note whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the program’s installation location. A directory under Program Files (x86) often indicates a 32-bit application, while Program Files commonly contains 64-bit software. This is a clue, not absolute proof.
Repair or reinstall the matching edition of the host application. Do not copy a 64-bit sccex.dll into a 32-bit program directory, or the reverse.

Do not place the file manually in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are governed by Windows architecture and file-system redirection rules. Microsoft describes that behavior in its file-system redirector documentation, but it does not mean ordinary application DLLs belong there.
Fix 4: Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
Some Outside In builds depend on Microsoft Visual C++ runtime files. Oracle’s Viewer documentation identifies Visual C++ Redistributable components, including msvcr140.dll, for relevant implementations.
This is more likely when the message names another missing file, such as msvcr140.dll, or says that the application could not load a required module. Visual C++ does not contain sccex.dll; it supplies runtime dependencies that the Outside In component may need.
Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Identify whether the failed application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Download the official Microsoft redistributable that matches the application.
- Install x86 for a 32-bit application, including a 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows.
- Install x64 for a 64-bit application.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected program again.
Multiple Visual C++ runtime generations can coexist. Do not remove working runtime packages simply because another version is installed.
If the runtime installer reports that the component is already installed, choose its Repair option if available. If the error remains, return to repairing or reinstalling the host program.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
Because sccex.dll is an application file rather than a documented Windows system component, Windows repair commands are not the first choice when only one program is affected.
Use them when several unrelated applications are failing, Windows itself is behaving abnormally, or the problem began with broader system corruption.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its Windows repair instructions.
Success means the commands complete without an unrepaired corruption message, not necessarily that sccex.dll is restored. These commands repair Windows components; they do not rebuild the correct third-party Outside In installation.

Repeating SFC and DISM without checking what changed can waste time when the real problem is a damaged application package. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds, while its full version performs repairs; reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when sccex.dll belongs to that program.
Fix 6: Check recent updates, cleanup, or restore changes
If the error started immediately after an application update, Windows update, disk-cleanup operation, or security event, reverse the most recent relevant change.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →First, use the host application’s own Repair, Update, or rollback option. If that does not help:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Update history.
- Review updates installed around the time the problem began.
- Check the application’s update history or installer logs as well.
For a broader system change, use System Restore:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore process.
Microsoft’s recovery options explain that System Restore can roll back system files and settings without normally changing personal files. It may remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics, storage, or chipset driver normally does not provide sccex.dll. Driver work is therefore not a primary fix for this particular error. Consider it only when the application also crashes with graphics, storage, or hardware initialization errors.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or install the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
Do not replace application DLLs through Device Manager. If updating a driver changes nothing, return to repairing the program that owns sccex.dll.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Hunting through Device Manager and checking many driver packages manually can make it difficult to tell which change mattered. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers, while the full version installs updates; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the affected application.
What not to do
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incompatible architecture, a modified file, or a build that does not match the rest of Outside In. Even a genuine-looking copy may fail because the application also needs companion DLLs, filters, configuration, and a particular runtime.
Use the official installer for the application that reports the error. If you maintain software that embeds Outside In, obtain the SDK or package through the vendor’s official distribution channel.
Do not copy sccex.dll into Windows folders
Copying the file into System32, SysWOW64, or the Windows directory can create version conflicts and makes future repairs harder. The DLL should normally remain with the application that loads it.
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration entry points used by COM or ActiveX components. sccex.dll is an application runtime/API library, not normally a self-registering COM server.
Running:
regsvr32 sccex.dll
will not restore a missing companion DLL, repair an incomplete installation, correct architecture, or reinstall the Outside In component. It may instead produce an entry-point or registration error.

FAQ
Is sccex.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Outside In Viewer Technology and applications that embed that component. It should not normally be treated as a Windows system file.
Which program installed sccex.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify the host program. Check the erroring executable, installed applications, file path, file properties, and digital signature.
Is sccex.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot prove whether a file is safe. Verify its location, publisher, digital signature, and the application that installed it. A copy in an unexpected temporary or startup location should be scanned.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I register sccex.dll?
Usually no. It is normally an application runtime/API DLL, not a COM or ActiveX server. Repair or reinstall the host application instead.
Does Visual C++ fix sccex.dll?
Only when the application also lacks a required Visual C++ runtime. Installing Visual C++ does not replace sccex.dll or repair an incomplete Outside In installation.
Do I need the 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Match the DLL set to the application process. A 32-bit program needs 32-bit dependencies, while a 64-bit program needs 64-bit dependencies.
Can SFC restore sccex.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It does not normally restore third-party application files. Use SFC and DISM only when there is evidence of wider Windows corruption.

What is the safest fix?
Identify the application that reports the error, then use its official repair, update, or reinstall process. That restores sccex.dll together with the matching Outside In files and dependencies.
