sciter-x.dll is an application-bundled library from the Sciter HTML, CSS, and script interface engine. It is not a Windows system file, a Visual C++ Redistributable file, or a DLL that should normally be copied into System32.
The safest fix is to identify the program requesting it, then repair or reinstall that exact program. ESET Online Scanner is a prominent example, but older software such as iMesh, Lphant, and Comodo Dragon also bundled Sciter components.

What sciter-x.dll belongs to
Sciter is an embeddable user-interface engine developed by Terra Informatica Software. A program can use its files to display windows and controls built with web-style technologies instead of native Windows controls.
| Item | What you should know |
|---|---|
| File | sciter-x.dll |
| Category | Private application DLL |
| Publisher associated with Sciter | Terra Informatica Software |
| Windows component | No |
| Visual C++ runtime file | No |
| Correct location | Usually beside the application that loads it |
| Universal version | No; the matching copy depends on the parent application |
| Current SDK naming | Public Sciter SDKs generally use sciter.dll in separate Windows architecture folders |
The original filename and internal metadata may identify the library as an embeddable Sciter engine, but that does not prove that every file named sciter-x.dll is genuine. A malicious installer can use a familiar filename.

First identify the application behind the error
Do this before downloading anything. The application directory determines which copy, architecture, and related dependencies are correct.
Check the error window
Read the executable name in the message. Examples include:
ESETOnlineScanner.exe- An ESET security executable
- An old media, browser, or file-sharing program
- A custom business application using Sciter
If the message only says that sciter-x.dll is missing, look at the shortcut:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Right-click the shortcut that fails.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target.
- Note the executable path and the containing folder.
- Do not replace the DLL yet.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- In the right pane, choose Find.
- Search for
sciter-x.dll. - Open the matching event and record the application name and path.
If the event points to a removed program, stale shortcut, scheduled task, or service, reinstalling an unrelated program will not solve the problem.
Check the DLL’s folder
If a copy still exists:
- Search for
sciter-x.dllfrom File Explorer. - Right-click a result and select Open file location.
- Look at the other files in that folder.
- Identify the nearby executable, product name, or installation directory.
Do not assume that the copy with the newest-looking date is correct. A matching DLL normally belongs in the directory used by its parent executable, not in a Windows-wide folder.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the highest-probability repair because application-private DLLs are normally installed beside the executable that loads them.
Use the application’s repair option
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu or the application entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Some desktop installers provide their own repair command instead:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Complete the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Reinstall from the original vendor
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up any application-specific data you need.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official website or customer portal.
- Install the same product again.
- Start it from its newly created shortcut.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer or another application. Even if both programs use Sciter, their builds may be incompatible.
Fix 2: Repair ESET Online Scanner correctly
ESET Online Scanner is not installed in the same way as a conventional permanent desktop application. It is unpacked and run, so deleting or damaging its application data can leave a startup error behind.
If the error mentions ESET Online Scanner:
- Start ESET Online Scanner if it opens far enough to show its interface.
- Open Settings.
- Select Delete application data on closing.
- Close the scanner.
- Restart Windows if ESET requests it.
- Download a fresh ESET Online Scanner copy from ESET’s official website.
- Run the new download.
If the scanner will not open, remove the old scanner data using ESET’s own uninstall instructions, then download a fresh copy. Do not obtain sciter-x.dll separately.
For a full ESET Windows product:
- Download the current installer from your ESET account or ESET’s official product page.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the ESET product and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer.
- Activate the product when prompted.
If the normal removal process fails, use ESET Uninstaller only according to ESET’s support instructions. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair tool.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined the DLL, or a damaged installation may have triggered a detection.
In an ESET desktop product:
- Open ESET.
- Select Tools.
- Open Quarantine.
- Find the detection associated with the affected application.
- Inspect its original path and detection name.
- Restore it only if the path belongs to a known installation and the detection has been confirmed as a false positive.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward.
In ESET Online Scanner, open its quarantine view after a scan and use Restore cleaned files only when you have verified the file and parent program.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to force an unknown DLL to load. If the file was in a temporary folder, an unofficial installer directory, or an unexpected location, quarantine it and reinstall the application from its original vendor.
Fix 4: Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application needs its compatible 32-bit Sciter build. A 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit build. Windows 11 and most Windows 10 installations can run 32-bit applications, but that does not make 32-bit and 64-bit DLLs interchangeable.
Common signs of an architecture or compatibility problem include:
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The specified module could not be found”
- “This application is not designed to run on Windows”
- “The file contains an error”
- “The procedure entry point could not be found”
“Specified module could not be found” can also mean that sciter-x.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstall the parent program and its official prerequisites before trying to identify individual runtime files.
The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable may be needed by an application, but it does not install sciter-x.dll. Install it only when the application or its vendor specifically requires the matching runtime.

Do not place a 32-bit DLL in C:WindowsSystem32 or a 64-bit DLL in C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are controlled Windows locations, and neither is the normal destination for this application-private library.
Fix 5: Check Windows components only if other programs also fail
sciter-x.dll is not normally protected by Windows, so System File Checker will not usually reconstruct it. Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated Windows applications are failing, system components are damaged, or Windows Update is malfunctioning.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components, not an application’s private Sciter file. If the error names only one old application, reinstall that application instead.
Running repeated scans without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting confusing. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies before you decide whether to use its repair features, but the definitive fix remains reinstalling the program that owns this DLL.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics or display driver is not normally the owner of sciter-x.dll. Update drivers only if Event Viewer, Device Manager, or the application’s documentation also identifies a graphics, display, or hardware failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the relevant adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a laptop, use the manufacturer’s support page when Windows does not find a suitable driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware entries and checking stale versions; its full repair or driver installation features are optional, and a driver update will not replace an application-owned sciter-x.dll.
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
DLL download sites can provide malware, an incorrect build, or the wrong architecture. A replacement may appear to fix the message while causing crashes, security exposure, or DLL hijacking later.
Use the original application vendor’s installer. For developer-controlled deployments, use the exact Sciter binary from the matching SDK and place it beside the executable. That is different from downloading a generic file for an end-user repair.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Windows searches several directories when loading a DLL. Copying an application library into a searched system location can make the wrong program load it and can create a DLL hijacking risk.
Do not run regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions, commonly COM or ActiveX components. Sciter is normally loaded by the application and is not usually registered globally. Running commands such as these is not a repair:
regsvr32 sciter-x.dll
It will commonly produce a module or entry-point error and distract from the actual owner application.
Do not install Windows Features at random
There is no standard Windows Feature that supplies sciter-x.dll. Enabling legacy components, media features, or unrelated .NET options will not replace this application file unless the parent vendor specifically requires that component.
If the error returns after reinstalling
Check whether the message is coming from the program you just repaired:
- Open Event Viewer again.
- Find the newest application error.
- Record the calling executable path.
- Check whether the path belongs to an old ESET installation, stale shortcut, service, or scheduled task.
- Remove the obsolete application through its official uninstaller.
- Scan the remaining folder before deleting it manually.
If the error began immediately after a known installation or update, System Restore may be a fallback. It does not replace a proper application reinstall and may affect other software changes.
Frequently asked questions
Is sciter-x.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an application-bundled Sciter engine library. Windows does not normally provide it as a system component.
Is sciter-x.dll part of Visual C++?
No. Visual C++ files may be dependencies of the parent application, but the Redistributable does not provide sciter-x.dll.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does every sciter-x.dll belong to ESET?
No. ESET products and ESET Online Scanner are important examples, but older Sciter-based applications also bundled the file. Identify the executable and folder first.
Should I register sciter-x.dll?
No. It is normally loaded privately by its application rather than registered as a COM or ActiveX component.
Why does the error say a module is missing when the DLL is present?
The DLL itself may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, or blocked. Reinstall the parent application and check its architecture before replacing individual files.
What is the correct final repair?
Find the application named by the error, remove or repair its damaged installation, and reinstall it from the original vendor. That restores the matching DLL and the supporting files together.
