Scorn Critic Reviews: What Critics Think and Who Should Play

Critics’ reception of Scorn is mixed. Here’s what its atmosphere, puzzles, combat and length mean for players deciding whether to try it.

Scorn is a divisive first-person horror adventure: critics have recognized its grotesque visual world, while its puzzles, combat, pacing and sparse guidance may be less appealing depending on what you want from a game. Metacritic’s page lists a 70 Metascore from 72 critic reviews, labeled “Mixed or Average”; that is a changing aggregator snapshot, not a verdict on whether the game suits you.

What is Scorn, and what do critics evaluate?

Developed by Ebb Software and published by Kepler Interactive, Scorn was released on October 14, 2022. You explore interconnected, nightmarish environments as an isolated figure. The official descriptions emphasize exploration, puzzles, limited inventory and ammunition, and combat, with the environment itself central to the experience. The result sits between first-person horror and an adventure built around navigating an unsettling world.

Those ingredients help explain why reception can vary. Players looking for atmosphere and environmental discovery may be drawn to the setting; players who prioritize clear direction, consistently satisfying combat, or a long campaign may weigh the game differently. That is a preference-based way to read the reviews, not a claim that every critic reached the same judgment.

What does the critic score mean?

Metacritic lists Scorn at 70 from 72 critic reviews and classifies that score as “Mixed or Average.” The score and review count are a snapshot of the page accessed in 2026 and may change as the listing changes. An aggregate compresses different reviews into one number, so it is most useful as a starting point rather than a substitute for reading criticism of the elements that matter to you.

What critics focus on

Atmosphere and environmental design

The game’s world is a major part of its identity: exploration takes place in interconnected, grotesque spaces rather than in a conventional, heavily explained setting. If visual atmosphere and environmental discovery are your priorities, look for reviews that discuss whether the setting carries the experience for them.

Puzzles, pacing and guidance

Puzzles are a core part of the official description, but a player’s experience depends on how readable their solutions feel and how the game’s pacing supports exploration. The premise and descriptions also signal a minimal-exposition approach. That can suit players who like piecing together a world themselves, while those who want explicit objectives or frequent explanation may find it less engaging.

Combat, resources and checkpoints

The official listings describe combat alongside limited ammunition and inventory. Those constraints can make encounters feel consequential, but whether that tension is satisfying depends on how the combat and checkpoint system work together in practice. PC Gamer’s review discusses the checkpoint system as part of its own play experience; treat that as one critic’s account, not a universal description of how difficult every player will find it.

Length and value

PC Gamer discusses an advertised five-hour playtime. That figure is not a measured completion time for every player: exploration, puzzle-solving pace and retries can affect an individual run. Consider whether a focused horror adventure of that advertised length matches your expectations for its structure and price, rather than assuming a fixed playtime.

Is Scorn worth playing?

Scorn is most likely to appeal if you want an atmospheric, visually distinctive horror adventure and are comfortable with puzzles, limited resources and minimal overt guidance. It is a less obvious fit if your main priorities are clearly signposted objectives, combat-forward action, or a long campaign. The critics’ aggregate points to mixed reception; your own preferences across atmosphere, puzzle readability, combat and length are a better decision guide than the score alone.
