Steel Wool Studios released the game on December 16, 2021, added the free Ruin story DLC in 2023 and continued issuing technical updates. The wider franchise also remained active, but the sources available through June 2025 do not identify the successor Cawthon said he would eventually choose or promise more Security Breach content.
What did Scott Cawthon’s retirement announcement mean?
On June 17, 2021, Cawthon said he was retiring from his then-current role in the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise. He also said the franchise would continue and that he would eventually hand it to “Someone of my choosing, and someone that I trust.” He did not name that person or give a date for a handover. Cawthon said he would still be around, but not in the capacity he had been before. GameSpot’s June 17, 2021 report quotes his announcement and his explanation that he wanted to spend more time with his family and make games for fun.
Security Breach was already a Steel Wool Studios project when Cawthon made the announcement. Contemporary coverage did not establish that his retirement canceled the game or transferred it to another developer. Game Informer’s June 17, 2021 report noted that the announcement’s effect on the game was not yet known at the time.
Did Security Breach come out?
Yes. Steel Wool Executive Producer Ray McCaffrey announced a December 16, 2021 release date, and the game launched on that date. On December 17, Steel Wool acknowledged launch problems including bugs, unclear missions, interaction issues, crashes and performance concerns. McCaffrey said the studio was “in it for the long haul” and that the game had “a bright future ahead of it.” That was a statement of intent in a post-launch update—not a guarantee of a continuing content schedule. Steel Wool’s December 17, 2021 update describes the issues and the studio’s response.

The game released on PS5, PS4 and PC in December 2021, followed by Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One in November 2022, and Nintendo Switch in April 2023. Game Informer’s listing provides the platform and release-date history. The official premise follows Gregory, trapped overnight in Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex, as he tries to survive until dawn with Freddy’s help. Steel Wool’s game page has the studio’s synopsis. Store listings and platform compatibility can change, so check the current listing for your platform before buying.
What support and extra content followed?
Free Ruin story DLC
Steel Wool announced Ruin as free downloadable content in July 2023. It follows Cassie as she searches the ruined Pizzaplex for Gregory, with a darker, more claustrophobic setting and gameplay emphasizing patience and timing. The initial announcement listed PS4, PS5 and PC, with Xbox and Switch versions to follow. Steel Wool’s July 14, 2023 announcement describes the DLC and its release plans.

Later technical updates
Steel Wool continued technical support after Ruin. Its August 5, 2024 patch notes cover the base game and DLC on PS4 and PS5, including troubleshooting for version 1.016 and instructions for owners installing from a physical disc. The sources available here do not name the person Cawthon said he would eventually choose, so it is not possible to say who took over the franchise leadership role from these records. That gap does not prove that no successor exists. Steel Wool’s official announcements index lists FNAF projects and updates through June 2025, including Secret of the Mimic news, showing that franchise activity continued. But the index does not establish a new Security Breach roadmap, and the latest listed activity does not prove what changed after June 2025. Steel Wool’s announcement index is the place to check for its published updates.

In practical terms, Security Breach was released, received a free story expansion and had later technical updates. The evidence cited here does not establish a current schedule for additional content.
