Start with reversible checks: record when the crash happens and its exact error, verify the Steam files, then test without Workshop add-ons and try simpler display settings. These steps are not guaranteed fixes. The detailed crash FAQ available for SCP: Containment Breach Multiplayer is for a separate game, so its advice should not be treated as confirmed instructions for the single-player SCP – Containment Breach.
First, confirm which game you have
Steam lists the single-player game as SCP – Containment Breach, published by SCP-CB Community Preservation Project. Its listing describes DirectX 9 support, community fixes, and Steam Workshop support. The developer-pinned crash FAQ, by contrast, is for SCP: Containment Breach Multiplayer, a distinct project. Its suggestions below are useful troubleshooting options, not proof that the same settings or file paths apply to the single-player game.
Before changing anything, note where the crash occurs: before the launcher, during startup, while loading a save or map, or during play. Copy the exact error text, including any “Memory Access Violation” message, and note whether you use Workshop add-ons. The game title alone does not identify the cause.

Try these reversible checks in order
1. Verify the installed game files
The Multiplayer FAQ recommends verifying files for crashes and Memory Access Violation reports. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam finish, then launch the game again. This checks the installation; it does not diagnose every possible crash.

2. Test without Workshop add-ons
Disable or unsubscribe from Workshop add-ons, then try launching the game. If it becomes stable, re-enable add-ons one at a time, testing after each change, to identify a possible conflict. The Multiplayer FAQ also describes a divide-and-test approach: re-enable a subset at a time to narrow down a larger collection faster. Add-ons are only a possible factor, not an assumed cause.
3. Simplify the display settings
The Multiplayer FAQ suggests lowering the resolution through the launcher or configuration settings when the selected resolution may be too demanding for that setup. It also lists disabling the startup video and trying borderless windowed mode. Change one setting at a time and retest so you can tell whether it made a difference. These options are not established fixes for every single-player crash.

4. Be careful before editing options.ini
The FAQ gives this location for the current Multiplayer build’s configuration file: %appdata%SCP Containment Breach MultiplayerDataoptions.ini. It warns that an older copy in the installation folder may not be the active file. That path is specific to the Multiplayer FAQ; do not assume it is the right location for the single-player game. Check the exact edition and build before editing a configuration file, and keep a backup of any file you change.
5. Leave graphics compatibility experiments until later
For some low-frame-rate or graphics-compatibility situations, the Multiplayer FAQ suggests forcing the game to use the discrete graphics card or trying dgVoodoo, a compatibility wrapper. These are later experiments for that edition, not universal crash remedies. Try them only when the symptoms fit, change one thing at a time, and undo the change if it makes behavior worse. A crash alone is not a reason to buy a new graphics card.

Check requirements without confusing them with the cause
Steam’s listing for the single-player game states the following minimum and recommended specifications. Meeting them does not guarantee that a particular setup will run without crashing, and falling below them does not establish why a crash occurred.
| Specification | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10/11 | Windows 10/11 |
| Processor | Intel Pentium E2160 | Intel Core i5, 3 GHz, 4-core |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM |
| Graphics | 3D-capable graphics card with 2 GB VRAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 |
| DirectX | Version 9.0c | Version 9.0c |
| Storage | 400 MB | 400 MB |
Steam separately notes that its client has supported only Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024. That client-support statement is distinct from the game’s listed operating-system requirements; it does not change the requirements shown on the game page.

Steam’s support page for the single-player title does not provide a game-specific crash diagnosis. If the steps above do not help, use the support or community route for the exact edition you own. Include the crash stage, exact error text, Windows version, whether the game is modded, and which checks you tried. This gives others useful details without implying that a particular cause or fix has already been established.
