Scream has the ingredients for a distinctive video game: a masked killer, a cast of people with secrets, and a story that invites you to question what you think you know. The strongest adaptation would make suspicion something players act on—not just an excuse to run from Ghost Face. There is no official announcement surfaced in the Paramount materials reviewed here, but the franchise has already had a small mobile-game tie-in, and the case for a more ambitious game is clear.
Why Scream fits games better than a standard slasher
The franchise’s signature pleasure is not simply seeing Ghost Face appear. It is trying to read the people around the mask: who is lying, who is in danger, and whether a clue is genuine or a setup. Film audiences can speculate, but a game can make those judgments consequential.

Players might collect evidence, compare conflicting alibis, decide whom to trust, and choose whether to protect one character at the risk of leaving another exposed. An accusation could change who shares information or survives. The story could still hold back a carefully timed reveal, but the route to that reveal would belong partly to the player.

What kind of Scream game would work?
Different formats could serve the material, but each would need to protect the mystery while giving players meaningful choices. These are editorial trade-offs, not ratings of existing products.
| Format | What it could emphasize | Main design risk |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player interactive thriller | Investigation, dialogue, character suspicion, and choices that shape who survives | Choices can feel cosmetic if the story funnels every player toward the same outcome |
| Ensemble survival game | Group decisions, distinct character perspectives, and multiple possible outcomes | Too much branching can dilute the suspense or make characters feel interchangeable |
| Asymmetrical online chase game | The mask, pursuit, and tension of escaping a killer | It can lose Scream’s central appeal—figuring out who is behind the threat—and resemble other licensed horror games |
A hybrid could combine a story campaign with another mode, but the extra mode should reinforce rather than displace the mystery. The key tests are whether the game can preserve surprise, make decisions matter, give characters distinct motives, support replay without making the reveal trivial, and remain feasible to develop and license.

Make knowledge as important as survival
A strong Scream game would let players act on incomplete information. A clue might clear one character while making another’s story less credible; protecting someone could close off a line of investigation. That tension turns suspicion into play. If the only meaningful input is where to run or when to attack, the adaptation leaves its most distinctive material unused.
Let replay reveal more, not spoil everything
Multiple outcomes could encourage replay, but the identity of the killer should not become a simple checklist item players solve once and then bypass. Different character choices, evidence paths, or survival outcomes could alter what players learn while preserving the possibility of misdirection.

Scream has appeared in a video game before
A Scream video game is not wholly unprecedented. MobyGames catalogs Scre4m as a 2011 iPhone release from TWC Games, developed by Codeglue, and describes stealth-horror play in which the player is Ghost Face: MobyGames’ Scre4m entry. A contemporaneous trade report also covered TWC Games’ plans to develop games based on Dimension Films properties, including Scream: Post Magazine’s 2011 report.
That historical mobile tie-in is a useful precedent, not evidence of a current console or PC adaptation. It also does not answer what a full-scale Scream game should be. The opportunity now is to build around investigation, character, and player judgment rather than treating the mask alone as the whole pitch.

Is a new Scream video game announced?
No official announcement surfaced in the Paramount sources reviewed. Paramount’s current Scream release information covers the films, while its games announcement describes a wider gaming operation; neither names a Scream video game. That is a statement about the reviewed public sources, not proof that no confidential or unannounced project exists. See Paramount’s Scream 7 information and Paramount Games’ introduction.
There is a plausible industry route to investigate, but not a confirmed project. In its June 18, 2026 introduction, Paramount Games said it brings together Skydance games groups and Paramount IP work, covering development, publishing, and interactive licensing across its portfolio. The studio framed its goal as making “the games that define franchises — the ones fans return to for years.” That is studio marketing language, not a Scream announcement or an invitation to developers. A Scream adaptation could also require coordination with other relevant rights holders.

The franchise has fresh studio-reported momentum: in a May 21, 2026 release, Paramount called Scream 7 the latest chapter and said it had earned more than $214 million worldwide, making it the franchise’s highest-grossing installment at that point. This is Paramount’s box-office figure, not an independent analysis. The release also said the film would arrive on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada on May 28, 2026; streaming availability depends on territory and can change. Details are in Paramount’s May 21, 2026 release.
Rights make a Scream game more complicated than its mask
The Scream franchise and the Ghost Face mask have distinct licensing interests. GameSpot has reported that the franchise licensor is not the same as the mask licensor: GameSpot’s report on Ghost Face licensing. That distinction matters because a game using the films’ characters and world may face a different rights question from one using the recognizable mask.
A 2017 interview with the lead developer of a proposed Scream game described working with mask creator R.J. Torbert while still needing to negotiate with Dimension Films and affiliates: KeenGamer’s developer interview. That account describes the situation at the time; it does not establish the current rights chain or the status of any developer’s license. The available reporting is not a current legal map, so any future adaptation would need to establish the relevant permissions rather than assume the mask alone is enough.

Quick Recap
What a good adaptation must get right
- Make investigation playable: clues and conflicting accounts should change what the player can do, not just decorate the story.
- Give trust a cost: choices about whom to believe or protect should affect relationships, information, or survival.
- Preserve surprise: branching outcomes and replay should not reduce the reveal to a routine puzzle answer.
- Keep the cast distinct: characters need their own motives and perspectives, not just different voices in a shared chase.
- Respect the rights picture: any project would need to address the relevant franchise and mask licensing interests, whose current arrangement is not established by the cited reporting.
