In Burning Crusade Classic, neither the Scryers nor the Aldor is best for every character. Compare the faction’s shoulder inscription with your class and specialization’s stat priorities, then weigh other rewards such as the Scryers’ Revered Bloodgem and faction-specific quests, gear, and recipes. You can change allegiance later, but doing so costs reputation and repeatable turn-ins.
How to choose between the Scryers and Aldor
Use this order to make the decision for your character:
- Compare the shoulder inscriptions. Their stat mixes differ by role, so check which combination better suits your specialization rather than choosing by class name alone.
- Check other faction rewards. The Scryers’ Bloodgem is a Revered reward that may matter to caster DPS, while faction-specific gear, recipes, and quest rewards can also influence the choice.
- Consider quest and travel access. Faction standing opens the corresponding questlines and access to the flight master in that faction’s Shadowmoon Valley stronghold.
- Factor in your starting reputation and the cost of switching. Your race can affect which side is easier to pursue initially, and changing later means rebuilding reputation with the new faction.
The choice becomes available after the Shattrath introduction quests A’dal and City of Light. Choosing one faction makes the other Unfriendly, and reputation gains work against the opposing faction. Remaining neutral is possible, but it limits faction questlines, vendor rewards, and stronghold flight-master access. The 2021 faction comparison guide discusses these trade-offs.
Shoulder inscriptions by role
The following epic inscription values are reported by the 2021 comparison guide for Burning Crusade Classic. They show the trade-offs, not a universal ranking: which side benefits your character depends on its stat priorities.

|---|---|---|---|
| Caster DPS | Greater Inscription of Discipline: +18 spell damage/healing and +10 spell critical strike | Greater Inscription of the Orb: +15 spell critical strike and +12 spell damage | Aldor favors spell damage/healing; Scryers favors spell critical strike. |
| Physical DPS | Greater Inscription of Vengeance: +30 attack power and +10 critical strike | Greater Inscription of the Blade: +15 critical strike and +20 attack power | Aldor gives more attack power; Scryers gives more critical strike. |
| Healer | Greater Inscription of Faith: +33 healing and +4 mana per 5 seconds | Greater Inscription of the Oracle: +22 healing and +6 mana per 5 seconds | Aldor gives more healing; Scryers gives more mana regeneration. |
| Tank | Greater Inscription of Warding: +15 dodge and +10 defense | Greater Inscription of the Knight: +10 dodge and +15 defense | Aldor gives more dodge; Scryers gives more defense. |
Wowhead’s faction comparison describes Aldor’s inscription as a marginal caster-DPS edge for many specs, and notes the additional attack power on Aldor’s physical-DPS inscription. Those broad comparisons do not replace build-specific stat weights: healers and tanks, in particular, may value the competing stats differently.
Other rewards that can tip the choice
Scryers’ Bloodgem
The Scryers’ Bloodgem is a Revered reward worth checking for some caster-DPS builds. It can be a reason to choose Scryers even when your shoulder-inscription comparison points toward Aldor. Whether it matters depends on your character’s gear and build; it is not a blanket recommendation for all casters.

Faction quests, gear, and recipes
Each faction has its own quests and vendor rewards, including gear and recipes. Review the specific rewards relevant to your character before committing. Faction standing also determines access to the corresponding stronghold flight master in Shadowmoon Valley.
What switching factions involves
Switching is possible, but the guides updated in January 2026 describe it as a substantial reputation rebuild. You lose progress with the faction you leave, then use the opposing faction’s repeatable turn-in quest to climb from Hated to Neutral before its usual reputation methods become available.

| Change of allegiance | NPC and quest | Repeatable turn-in |
|---|---|---|
| Aldor to Scryers | Arcanist Adyria: Voren’thal’s Visions, requiring eight Dampscale Basilisk Eyes | Follow-up turn-in uses the same stated reward. |
| Scryers to Aldor | Sha’nir: Strained Supplies, requiring eight Dreadfang Venom Sacs | More Venom Sacs |
The January 2026 Wowhead faction guides list 250 reputation per repeatable eight-item turn-in and 1,344 items to go from 0/36,000 Hated to Neutral, with a lower figure for Humans. Treat those numbers as guide baselines, not an exact cost for every character: starting reputation and racial modifiers affect the total. The required items can be farmed from Outland mobs or obtained through the in-game Auction House.

Ways to build reputation
Both factions offer quests as well as repeatable item turn-ins. According to the Wowhead guides updated January 6, 2026:
- Aldor: Dreadfang Venom Sacs are used to reach Neutral after defecting; Marks of Kil’jaeden can be turned in up to Honored; later reputation comes from Marks of Sargeras, Fel Armaments, and quests.
- Scryers: Dampscale Basilisk Eyes are used to reach Neutral after defecting; Firewing Signets can be turned in up to Honored; later reputation comes from Sunfury Signets, Arcane Tomes, and quests.
The guides report 11,500 reputation from non-repeatable Aldor quests and 11,765 from non-repeatable Scryers quests before applicable buffs. These are guide-reported totals, not a guarantee of the amount every character will receive.
Race and initial reputation
The faction guides report that Draenei start Friendly with Aldor and Unfriendly with Scryers, while Blood Elves start Friendly with Scryers and Unfriendly with Aldor. This affects the reputation path, but does not by itself determine which faction’s rewards suit your build.

Which faction should your character choose?
- Caster DPS: Compare Discipline and the Orb against your stat weights, then include the Scryers’ Revered Bloodgem if it suits your build.
- Physical DPS: Compare the extra attack power on Aldor’s Vengeance with the extra critical strike on the Scryers’ Blade.
- Healers: Decide whether your character benefits more from Aldor’s higher healing value or Scryers’ higher mana regeneration.
- Tanks: Compare Aldor’s additional dodge with Scryers’ additional defense according to your specialization and gear.
- Any role: Check faction-specific quests, recipes, gear, and stronghold travel access, and avoid choosing on the assumption that switching later will be effortless.
The faction mechanics and reward values here are scoped to Burning Crusade Classic. The cited guides do not establish that the same details apply to every World of Warcraft version or realm.
