scui.dll Won’t Load: Repair Legacy McAfee SecurityCenter

The program can’t start because scui.dll is missing from your computer.

scui.dll is a legacy McAfee SecurityCenter file, not a normal Windows component. The safest repair is to restore or remove the McAfee installation that is still trying to load it, rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

  • The error appears when McAfee opens, during startup, or during a McAfee update: repair or reinstall McAfee SecurityCenter, or remove its damaged remnants.
  • McAfee was recently uninstalled: run the normal uninstall again, then use McAfee’s official MCPR removal process if necessary.
  • Your antivirus quarantined the file: inspect quarantine and verify the original McAfee path before restoring anything.
  • The file is in System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder: do not assume it is genuine. Check the path, signature, and calling program.
  • Several unrelated programs are also failing: check the disk and Windows component store with chkdsk, DISM, and SFC.
  • The problem began immediately after an update or uninstall: consider System Restore.
  • A current, non-McAfee program names the file: identify that program first. The filename alone does not prove McAfee is responsible.

What scui.dll is

scui.dll is described as the McAfee SecurityCenter UI Resource. Historical references associate it with the older McAfee SecurityCenter application, which provided the graphical control center for McAfee security products.

#1 Best Overall

The file is not established as a Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. It should not normally be copied to:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

A historical McAfee installation may instead have used a path similar to:

C:Program FilesMcAfee.comAgentscui.dll

The exact location varies with the product and installation. Historical file indexes report different versions, sizes, architectures, and publisher details, so those values are not reliable identification criteria. A filename match is not enough.

The old file is mainly associated with legacy SecurityCenter. A newer McAfee application may not contain scui.dll at all. If the error appeared after moving to a newer McAfee product, the message may come from an abandoned startup entry, browser integration, scheduled task, or incomplete uninstall.

First, identify what is calling the file

Before repairing Windows, determine which program displays the message.

Check the error context

Note whether the message appears:

  • Before or immediately after signing in to Windows
  • When opening McAfee
  • While installing or updating McAfee
  • When launching another application
  • After an antivirus scan or quarantine action
  • After disk cleanup, an uninstall, or restoration of an old system image

If the error names another executable, inspect that program’s installation folder. Do not assume every scui.dll message comes from McAfee.

Check startup entries

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for McAfee, SecurityCenter, or an unknown entry connected with the error.
  4. Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location, if available.
  5. Record the full path before disabling anything.
  6. Disable only an entry clearly connected with the failed McAfee installation.

This does not repair the missing file, but it can stop a stale startup item from producing the message while you complete removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the file’s location

If a file named scui.dll exists, right-click it, choose Properties, and review:

  • General: full location and timestamps
  • Digital Signatures: signer and signature status
  • Details: description and product information
  • Microsoft Defender or other security results: current detection status

A copy in an old McAfee installation directory is more consistent with the historical file. A copy in System32, SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory needs further investigation.

Do not whitelist or replace the file solely because its name matches.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the McAfee installation

This is the most direct fix when the error appears while opening McAfee or during a McAfee update.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If McAfee is still installed

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. In Windows 11, choose Apps, then Installed apps.
In Windows 10, choose Apps, then Apps & features.
  4. Find the McAfee product.
  5. Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the product in Windows 10.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. Follow the removal wizard.
  8. Restart Windows.

If McAfee is still wanted, reinstall it only through the user’s official McAfee account or the installer supplied with the subscription. Do not use a standalone scui.dll download.

After reinstalling, open McAfee and confirm that its dashboard loads without the error. If the subscription is managed by an employer, school, or another organization, contact that administrator instead of using consumer removal software.

If normal uninstall fails

McAfee’s removal process uses its MCPR tool when the standard Windows uninstall does not remove the product successfully.

  1. Try the normal uninstall steps first.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Obtain MCPR from McAfee’s official support instructions.
  4. Run the tool as an administrator.
  5. Follow its prompts.
  6. Restart again.
  7. Check Installed apps, Startup apps, and the notification area for remaining McAfee components.

Do not manually delete McAfee folders before documenting them. Removing folders by hand can leave services, scheduled tasks, and registration entries in an inconsistent state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If McAfee is no longer needed, the goal is a clean removal, not restoration of an isolated legacy DLL. If protection is needed again, reinstall the current McAfee product through the official account and verify that real-time protection is enabled afterward.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

A security product may have removed or isolated a file. This is possible, but there is no established evidence that scui.dll is currently a widespread false-positive detection.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving scui.dll.
  5. Expand the event and record the original path and detection name.
  6. Check whether the path belonged to the McAfee installation.

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

  • The original path was clearly inside a trusted McAfee installation.
  • The McAfee installation is still required.
  • The file’s signature and surrounding installation are trustworthy.
  • Your security product identifies the detection as a false positive or clears it after an update.

If any part is uncertain, do not restore the isolated DLL. Remove and reinstall McAfee instead. After any restoration, update the security product and run a scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Remove a partially uninstalled McAfee component

A stale McAfee startup entry, browser integration, or scheduled task can continue requesting scui.dll after the main application has been deleted.

Complete the normal uninstall and MCPR process before investigating leftovers.

If the message remains:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Review Startup apps.
  3. Open Task Scheduler by searching for it from Start.
  4. Review Task Scheduler Library for clearly identified McAfee tasks.
  5. Check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for remaining McAfee entries.
  6. Record names and file paths before disabling or removing anything.

Avoid registry-cleaning utilities. They can remove useful references without repairing the underlying installation and make later troubleshooting harder.

If the computer belongs to an organization, do not remove enterprise McAfee or Trellix components with consumer MCPR unless the administrator instructs you to do so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check for disk or file-system damage

Use this path when multiple unrelated files are missing, applications crash unexpectedly, or Windows reports disk problems.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
chkdsk C: /scan
  1. Wait for the scan to finish.
  2. Follow any repair recommendation and restart if requested.

This checks the file system. It does not download or recreate scui.dll.

Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC repair Windows components, not arbitrary third-party application files. They are therefore not expected to restore a missing McAfee DLL, but they are appropriate when Windows itself is damaged or several system functions are failing.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to complete, then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows afterward.

If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not disprove the McAfee diagnosis. It usually means Windows protected files are intact and the missing file belongs to the third-party application.

Running repeated repair commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting confusing. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show what needs attention, but its full repair is optional and reinstalling McAfee remains the definitive fix for a file owned by that application.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a McAfee update, Windows update, software removal, or other system change and an appropriate restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that may change.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore changes system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but save open work before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error returns after restoring, repair or remove McAfee rather than repeatedly rolling Windows back.

Fix 6: Investigate malware or filename impersonation

A malicious file can use a familiar filename. Treat scui.dll as suspicious when it is outside the expected McAfee directory, has no valid signature, or appeared without a related McAfee installation.

  1. Record the file’s full path.
  2. Open Windows Security.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Run a Quick scan.
  5. If concerns remain, open Scan options and run a Full scan.
  6. Do not add the file to exclusions merely because an application reports it as missing.
  7. Quarantine the file if your security product identifies it as malicious.

If the file is in System32 or SysWOW64, do not replace it with a downloaded copy. The location is inconsistent with the established McAfee association and should be investigated as a possible misattribution or impersonation.

Do not download scui.dll separately

Random DLL download sites are unsafe sources for this problem. They may provide:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A modified or malicious file
  • A file from a different McAfee build
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A DLL with incompatible dependencies
  • A file that lacks a trustworthy digital signature

Even a file that removes the first error may fail later because SecurityCenter also depends on related binaries, services, resources, registry entries, and its original installation path.

The only defensible manual restoration is from a verified backup or the exact original McAfee installer, with the matching product, architecture, path, and signature. Reinstalling the parent application is safer.

Does regsvr32 scui.dll fix the problem?

Usually, no.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.

Do not blindly run:

regsvr32 scui.dll

There is no reliable evidence that scui.dll is a self-registering COM DLL. Historical SecurityCenter interfaces used custom browser integration, but that does not prove that this file should be registered with regsvr32.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If registration is attempted on an unsuitable DLL, Windows may report that the entry point is missing. That result does not restore the McAfee installation and can distract from the real problem.

Windows Features and Device Manager

Windows Features and Device Manager are not primary fixes for scui.dll.

  • Windows Features controls optional Windows components such as .NET features and legacy compatibility components. Enabling a feature will not supply a McAfee SecurityCenter DLL.
  • Device Manager manages hardware drivers. A missing McAfee UI resource is not normally a driver failure.

Use these areas only when the error is actually connected to a separate hardware device, driver, or Windows feature named in the message.

Driver compatibility check

If the problem began after a major Windows migration and other McAfee components also fail, install current hardware drivers from the computer or hardware manufacturer, not from a DLL archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click a device with a warning icon.
  5. Choose Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
  6. Use Update driver only when an appropriate manufacturer driver is available.
  7. Restart Windows.

Driver hunting can involve checking many hardware models and matching release packages manually. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver updates, while the full driver installation remains optional; updating a driver will not replace the McAfee file itself.

If the error remains after McAfee is gone

If MCPR completes and the message still appears:

  1. Restart Windows again.
  2. Check Task Manager → Startup apps.
  3. Check Task Scheduler for clearly identified McAfee entries.
  4. Check Installed apps for another McAfee or security product.
  5. Inspect the error’s exact title and the executable that launches it.
  6. Test whether the message appears in another Windows account.
  7. Run a malware scan if the file is in an unusual directory.
  8. Do not use a registry cleaner or copy a DLL into a Windows system folder.

If only one user profile is affected, a damaged profile is possible, but it is less likely than an orphaned McAfee entry. If the error names a current non-McAfee application, repair or reinstall that application instead.

FAQ

Is scui.dll part of Windows?

No evidence establishes it as a protected Windows component. It is associated with legacy McAfee SecurityCenter and should not normally be present in System32 or SysWOW64.

Does every McAfee product use scui.dll?

No. The filename mainly points to the older SecurityCenter interface. A current McAfee application may not contain it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy scui.dll into System32?

No. That can create security, compatibility, and architecture problems. Repair the McAfee installation or remove its remnants.

Is scui.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

Historical records are inconsistent, and no universal architecture should be assumed. Match the file to the exact parent application rather than choosing a file based on Windows bitness alone.

Why did SFC not restore the file?

SFC repairs protected Windows files. It is not expected to restore a third-party McAfee DLL.

Can I fix it by registering the DLL?

Usually not. regsvr32 applies to self-registering DLLs, and there is no reliable evidence that scui.dll requires that process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I still want McAfee?

Remove the damaged installation completely, restart, and reinstall the current product through the official McAfee account or authorized installer. Do not restore only scui.dll.

What if I no longer want McAfee?

Use Windows uninstall first, then McAfee’s official MCPR removal process if standard removal fails. Restart and check for leftover startup entries rather than manually deleting random folders.

What does “Error loading scui.dll” mean?

It commonly indicates that a program still expects the file but cannot find it or one of its dependencies. The exact wording varies by Windows version and calling application, so the program and file path matter more than the message alone.

Can malware use the same filename?

Yes. A file with the same name in an unrelated directory, without a valid McAfee signature, should be investigated rather than trusted.
