“sdrsvc.dll not found,” “Missing sdrsvc.dll,” “The program can’t start because sdrsvc.dll is missing from your computer,” and “sdrsvc.dll could not be loaded” all point toward the same Windows component: the Windows Backup service.
Unlike a game DLL, sdrsvc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file. It belongs to the SDRSVC service, supports legacy Windows Backup and Restore features, and normally lives in %SystemRoot%System32. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy may also be present in SysWOW64.
Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that best matches what you see:
- The file is missing or corrupted: install pending updates, then run DISM followed by SFC.
- The file exists but Backup and Restore will not open: check whether the Windows Backup service, RPC, or Volume Shadow Copy dependencies are available.
- The problem began after an update: use System Restore, uninstall the update, or reinstall the current Windows version on supported Windows 11 systems.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: verify its location and Microsoft signature before considering restoration.
- The service is absent from
services.msc: repair Windows rather than importing a registry file. - The error names another application: check the exact path and dependency listed by the error. The missing module may not actually be
sdrsvc.dll. - You were about to download the DLL: stop. Random DLL sites commonly provide the wrong build, architecture, or a tampered file.
What sdrsvc.dll does
sdrsvc.dll is associated with Microsoft Windows Backup Service, whose service name is SDRSVC. The older Backup and Restore interface can invoke this service through sdclt.exe.
The service works alongside Windows backup infrastructure, including Volume Shadow Copy Service, commonly called VSS. VSS creates consistent snapshots while Windows reads files for backup. RPC and other Windows service dependencies help coordinate those operations.

This relationship matters because a missing-file message does not always mean the file itself is gone. Windows may report that sdrsvc.dll could not load because a dependency is missing, the service registration is damaged, or the file does not match the Windows installation.
The file is associated with several Windows generations, including Windows Vista-era, Windows 7-era, Windows 8-era, and Windows 10-era system builds. Do not choose a replacement by comparing version numbers from a DLL index. Windows servicing must supply the copy that matches your installed edition, architecture, and build.
Check the exact error and file location
Before repairing anything, record the complete message and the action that triggers it:
- Does it appear during startup?
- Does it appear when opening Backup and Restore?
- Does
sdclt.exefail? - Does a separate application show the message?
- Does the message name
C:WindowsSystem32sdrsvc.dllor another path?
Then check the normal locations:
- Press
Win+E. - Enter
%SystemRoot%System32in the address bar. - Search for
sdrsvc.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64.
Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if it is available. A genuine system copy should identify Microsoft as the signer. A file in a game folder, Downloads folder, temporary directory, or an unfamiliar application directory deserves extra suspicion.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart
Windows Update can replace missing protected components and repair servicing problems that caused a file to disappear.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything available.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try Backup and Restore again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows Update itself fails, open the Get Help app and search for the Windows Update troubleshooter. Older Windows 10 installations may also expose troubleshooting tools under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing, corrupted, or mismatched copy of sdrsvc.dll.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files used by System File Checker. When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the operation that produced the error.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or could not repair some files. If it repaired files but the error remains, restart and run SFC again. Also check the exact path in the original error because the loader may be reporting a missing dependency rather than sdrsvc.dll itself.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options documented by Microsoft. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the direct repair path.
Fix 3: Check Windows Backup and its dependencies
A DLL can be present while the Windows Backup service is missing, disabled, or unable to start.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Look for Windows Backup or SDRSVC.
- Open its properties.
Windows Backup is normally demand-started. A Stopped status by itself does not prove a failure. The important test is whether it starts when Backup and Restore is invoked.
If the service exists but is disabled:
- Set Startup type to Manual where available.
- Click Apply.
- Try the backup operation again.
Do not create a replacement service entry manually. Do not import a .reg file from a forum or an old repair guide. Service registrations vary between Windows versions and architectures, and a registry import can make the installation harder to repair.
Also check these areas:
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC): it should not be disabled.
- Volume Shadow Copy: it may need to start when backup creates a snapshot.
- Event Viewer: open Start, search for Event Viewer, then check Windows Logs > System and Application around the failure time.
A message such as “The specified service does not exist as an installed service (0x80070424)” indicates a damaged or missing service registration. It does not prove that sdrsvc.dll is absent.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine system file after a false detection, although malware can also attempt to imitate a Windows DLL.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
sdrsvc.dll. - Compare the reported path with
%SystemRoot%System32or%SystemRoot%SysWOW64. - Inspect the file’s digital signature before restoring it.
Restore the file only when the path and Microsoft signature are consistent and the system has been scanned. If the detection appears genuine or the signature is missing, leave the file quarantined and run a full scan. An offline scan may be appropriate when malware is suspected.
Restoring a malicious file can put the computer at risk. After restoring a confirmed false positive, update Windows Security and check whether the detection returns.
Fix 5: Use System Restore or remove a recent update
Use recovery tools when the error began immediately after a driver, application, cleanup utility, or Windows update changed the system.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
System Restore
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Click System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Complete the restore and restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers, applications, and system changes. Back up important work first.
Uninstall a recent Windows update
From Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Choose Update history.
- Select Uninstall updates.
- Remove the relevant recent update if Windows allows it.
- Restart and test Backup and Restore.
If Windows will not boot normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.

Fix 6: Consider disk corruption or a repair installation
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, inspect the SFC results and check the health of the storage device. Repeated file corruption can indicate a file-system or disk problem, but do not assume that disk failure is the cause without evidence.
If Windows cannot repair the component store, use a matching repair source, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair. Back up personal data before using installation or recovery media.
A clean installation should be a last resort, not the first response to one missing DLL.

- Fix a missing RPC, VSS, or other dependency.
Use it only when a qualified Windows repair procedure specifically identifies a registration problem. Do not make it the standard response to every “sdrsvc.dll could not be loaded” message.
Do drivers or Windows Features matter?
sdrsvc.dll is not a graphics, audio, DirectX, or game-runtime DLL, so updating a GPU driver is not the normal fix. Device Manager is relevant only if Event Viewer identifies a storage controller or hardware driver problem alongside repeated file corruption.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for warning icons, especially under Storage controllers, Disk drives, and System devices.
- Open a device’s Properties > Driver tab.
- Use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support page for updates.
Hunting through dozens of driver versions can be time-consuming when a storage or system driver is implicated. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies stale drivers; the full version performs the driver installation, but it is not required for repairing sdrsvc.dll.

Why downloading sdrsvc.dll is unsafe
Do not download sdrsvc.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, a game directory, or an application folder.
That replacement may have:
- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A different language or servicing level.
- A missing Microsoft signature.
- Malware or tampered contents.
- Dependencies that do not match your installation.
The safe sources are Windows Update, the Windows component store, Microsoft installation media, System Restore, and Windows’ supported repair options. If another program reports the error but names its own installation directory, repair that program using its official installer. For the Windows Backup error described here, repairing Windows is the definitive path.
FAQ
Is sdrsvc.dll malware?
No. sdrsvc.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component when it is in the expected Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft signature. A copy in an unrelated folder should be investigated rather than trusted automatically.
Is sdrsvc.dll part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?
It is associated with legacy Windows Backup functionality across several Windows generations. Current Windows versions may present newer backup experiences while retaining compatibility components. The exact presence and behavior can vary by Windows edition and build.
Should I copy the file from SysWOW64 to System32?
No. Those directories serve different architectures. Copying between them can create a mismatched installation. Let DISM and SFC restore the correct files.
Why does the error say a module is missing when sdrsvc.dll exists?
The Windows loader may be unable to load a dependency used by the DLL. Check Event Viewer, the service state, RPC, VSS, antivirus history, and the exact path named by the error.
What information should I collect if the repair fails?
Record the Windows edition and build, exact error text, trigger action, file path, digital-signature result, Windows Backup service status, relevant Event Viewer entries, and the final DISM and SFC messages. That information distinguishes a missing file from a missing service, dependency, or damaged Windows installation.
