Sea of Thieves crashing or not opening on PC usually calls for different fixes depending on the launcher and failure stage. Check official service status, install Windows updates, test administrator permissions, and update the graphics driver first. Microsoft Store/Xbox users also need Store-specific reset and offline-permission checks; Steam users should skip those steps.

A black screen or immediate close is primarily a launch problem. A crash after setting sail calls for overclock, background-app, overlay, and hardware checks. A complete shutdown or reboot is not a normal game crash and points to broader Windows or hardware instability.

Key takeaways

  • Check the official Sea of Thieves Game Status page before changing files or reinstalling, because a service incident can look like a local launch failure.
  • Windows updates, administrator permissions, and graphics-driver problems are the first documented checks for Sea of Thieves crashes on launch or black-screen failures.
  • Microsoft Store and Xbox PC installations use different repair steps from Steam installations, including wsreset and the Windows app reset path.
  • Custom CPU or GPU overclocks, background applications, and Steam or Discord overlays are documented troubleshooting targets for crashes during gameplay.
  • A complete PC shutdown or reboot is not a normal game crash; investigate broader hardware or operating-system stability.
  • Steam lists Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 11, and 100 GB available storage as minimum requirements for Sea of Thieves.

Which Sea of Thieves crash are you seeing?

The correct fix depends on when Sea of Thieves fails. If Sea of Thieves is not opening on PC, hangs on a black screen, or closes immediately, start with service status, Windows, account permissions, the launcher-specific repair path, and graphics drivers. If Sea of Thieves crashes after setting sail, test overclocks, background applications, and overlays. If the whole PC powers off or reboots, treat the problem as system instability rather than an ordinary game crash.

How do you fix Sea of Thieves not opening on PC?

Work through the following eight fixes in order. The first five apply broadly, while the Microsoft Store permissions and reset steps are specifically for the Windows Store/Xbox PC installation.

1. Check Sea of Thieves service status

Before repairing the installation, check the official Sea of Thieves Game Status page. The status page is the right place to identify a service-wide incident, maintenance, or authentication problem. Status is volatile, so use the page as a live check rather than assuming that the service is currently healthy.

2. Install every pending Windows update

Windows Update is the best first local repair for Sea of Thieves crashing on launch or becoming stuck on a black screen shortly after launch. Rare’s launch guidance identifies an up-to-date Windows installation as the common starting point for these failures, and Microsoft explains that applications can become incompatible after Windows changes or upgrades.

  1. Open Windows Search.
  2. Type Check for Updates.
  3. Select the matching Windows Settings result.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately require a restart.

Test Sea of Thieves again after the restart before moving to reinstall or reset procedures.

3. Test with a local administrator account

Signing into Windows with a local administrator account is a permissions diagnostic recommended in Rare’s launch-support guidance. Rare says this resolves a majority of the cases described in that guidance; the result should help identify an account-permission problem, not justify using an administrator account permanently.

If Sea of Thieves launches only under the administrator account, investigate the original Windows account’s permissions and profile configuration. Reinstalling the game repeatedly will not necessarily correct a user-account permissions problem.

After testing, return to the least-privileged account that works for normal use. Do not disable security protections or grant permanent administrator access solely because the game launched once.

4. Repair or reset the Microsoft Store/Xbox PC installation

The following sequence is for Sea of Thieves installed through the Microsoft Store or Xbox PC app. Steam users should skip this branch because wsreset, Apps and Features, and Microsoft Store offline permissions do not repair a standard Steam installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Uninstall Sea of Thieves.
  2. Press the Windows key and type wsreset.
  3. Run wsreset as administrator.
  4. Wait for the command to complete, then reboot Windows.
  5. Reinstall Sea of Thieves. Rare’s documented guidance specifically advises installing the game to the C: drive.
  6. Open Apps and Features in Windows Settings.
  7. Find Sea of Thieves and open Advanced Options.
  8. Select Reset.

Rare’s full Windows launch troubleshooting sequence is the authority for this Store/Xbox branch. The reset can affect the Windows app’s local data, so use it only after confirming that the installation source is the Microsoft Store/Xbox route.

5. Update or cleanly reinstall the graphics driver

Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause Sea of Thieves to crash at launch or fail during initialization. Rare recommends removing the existing graphics driver, rebooting, installing the latest driver from the appropriate NVIDIA or AMD support destination, and rebooting again.

  1. Identify whether the PC uses NVIDIA or AMD graphics.
  2. Download the current driver from that manufacturer’s official support site.
  3. Remove the existing graphics driver using the manufacturer’s supported installation or removal process.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the downloaded driver.
  6. Restart Windows again and test Sea of Thieves.

Use the official Rare launch guidance for the documented driver-removal and reinstall recommendation. Avoid third-party “driver booster” or PC-cleaner utilities; those tools are not required by the cited support instructions.

6. Enable Microsoft Store offline permissions

Microsoft Store users should verify offline permissions separately from the Steam troubleshooting path. Open the Microsoft Store settings and enable the Store’s offline permissions option, then restart Windows and test Sea of Thieves again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This check belongs to the Windows Store/Xbox installation branch. Enabling Microsoft Store offline permissions is not a universal fix for Sea of Thieves keeps crashing on Steam.

7. Remove custom CPU and GPU overclocks

For a crash that occurs during gameplay rather than before launch, return the CPU and GPU to stock settings and test Sea of Thieves. Rare recommends disabling CPU overclock values and disabling GPU overclocking for the Sea of Thieves profile in Radeon Software or NVIDIA tuning software.

This is a diagnostic rollback, not proof that every Sea of Thieves crash is caused by overclocking. Disable only custom user tuning; a factory overclock supplied by the hardware manufacturer is a different condition. If the game becomes stable at stock settings, reintroduce changes one at a time or leave the unstable setting disabled.

Rare’s gameplay-crash guidance covers this distinction between custom tuning and factory hardware settings.

8. Close background applications and disable overlays

Close unnecessary background applications and test Sea of Thieves with overlays disabled. Rare specifically identifies Steam and Discord overlays as troubleshooting targets for crashes during gameplay.

  1. Close nonessential applications running in the background.
  2. Disable the Steam overlay if using Steam.
  3. Disable the Discord overlay if Discord is running.
  4. Launch Sea of Thieves and reproduce the activity that normally causes the crash.
  5. Re-enable overlays one at a time after stability returns to identify a conflict.

Testing overlays individually preserves useful features while showing whether one overlay is involved. Overlay conflicts are a diagnostic possibility, not evidence that Steam or Discord is universally incompatible with Sea of Thieves.

What are the Sea of Thieves PC requirements?

Compare the PC with the published Steam requirements before assuming that the installation is defective or buying replacement hardware. The requirements are compatibility targets, not a guarantee that every supported PC will run without crashes.

Requirement Minimum Recommended
Operating system 64-bit OS; Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher Windows 10 64-bit
Processor Intel i3-4170 at 3.7 GHz or AMD FX-6300 at 3.5 GHz Intel i7-4790 at 4 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 at 3.6 GHz
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon R9 270 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, AMD Radeon RX Vega 64, or Intel A750
Graphics API DirectX 11 DirectX 12
Network Broadband internet connection Broadband internet connection
Storage 100 GB available 100 GB available

These specifications come from the official Steam listing for Sea of Thieves: 2026 Edition. Falling below a requirement can explain launch or performance problems, but meeting the listed requirement does not rule out drivers, permissions, overlays, overclocks, heat, or service issues.

What if Sea of Thieves crashes with an Easy Anti-Cheat error?

An Easy Anti-Cheat error requires an error-specific troubleshooting branch; Easy Anti-Cheat is not established as the universal cause of every Sea of Thieves launch crash. Rare’s support index contains separate launch-error documentation, so match the exact on-screen message to the relevant article in the official Sea of Thieves support search results for crashing at launch.

Do not delete arbitrary game files, registry keys, or security software based only on a generic crash. Use the exact error text to choose the documented support path.

What if the whole PC shuts down or reboots?

A game crash should not shut down the entire PC. If the computer powers off, blue-screens, or reboots while Sea of Thieves is running, investigate hardware and operating-system stability in addition to the game: temperatures, power delivery, memory stability, graphics-driver behavior, and system event logs are more relevant than repeatedly reinstalling Sea of Thieves.

Remove custom overclocks first, confirm the graphics driver is cleanly installed, and test whether other demanding applications trigger the same shutdown. Rare explicitly treats a complete system shutdown as a broader hardware or operating-system issue rather than a normal game crash.

Which troubleshooting path should you use?

Installation and failure Priority actions Risk and reversibility
Steam; game never opens Check status, update Windows, test administrator permissions, reinstall or update graphics driver Mostly reversible diagnostics; driver reinstall requires a restart
Microsoft Store/Xbox PC; game never opens Check status, update Windows, enable offline permissions, run wsreset, then use the Store/Xbox reset sequence Reset and reinstall can remove local app data
Either launcher; black screen Update Windows, test graphics driver, then follow the installation-source branch Begin with low-impact checks
Either launcher; crash during gameplay Return CPU/GPU to stock, close background apps, disable Steam or Discord overlays Settings changes are generally reversible
Either launcher; complete shutdown or reboot Investigate hardware and operating-system stability Broader diagnostic scope; do not treat it as a routine game-only failure

When should you stop reinstalling?

Stop repeating game repairs when the symptom identifies a different layer: a live service incident points outside the PC, a launch failure limited to one Windows account points to permissions, a Microsoft Store-only failure points to the Store/Xbox branch, and a full system shutdown points to hardware or operating-system stability. Record the launcher, exact error text, failure stage, recent Windows or driver changes, and whether stock settings change the result before consulting Rare’s current support index.

The Bottom Line

For Sea of Thieves crashing or not opening on PC, check service status, install Windows updates, test permissions, and repair the installation according to the launcher. Then cleanly reinstall the graphics driver. Gameplay crashes also justify stock CPU/GPU settings and overlay tests; a complete shutdown or reboot requires broader PC stability troubleshooting.
