Achievement notifications have been linked to a historical Sea of Thieves freeze report, but current official issue tracking does not establish them as the cause of freezes while joining a game. Check the symptom and platform against the current Known Issues list before trying a fix: other tracked freezes involve Nvidia ShadowPlay and, on Xbox One, Game Transcription Override.
Are achievements causing the freeze?
Old community discussions connect achievement notifications with a freeze after loading into a session. One player said the problem appeared to be fixed after a notification issue was addressed; another discussion referred to notifications being disabled while freezes affecting some players were investigated. These reports explain why achievements may seem connected, but they do not confirm a current cause, a fix that is active today, or a diagnosis for your particular platform.
The current Sea of Thieves Known Issues index lists an achievements-and-trophies issue about unlocking achievements across multiple pirate profiles. That is a separate issue, not evidence that achievement notifications cause a joining freeze. The index does not provide an incidence rate or player count for the freeze reports.
Check whether a separately tracked issue matches
Note when the hang occurs, whether it clears or becomes a crash, and which platform and game version you use. Then compare those details with the official descriptions; the title alone is not enough to identify the cause.

- Nvidia ShadowPlay: The Known Issues index describes a freeze associated with ShadowPlay. Consider this only if you use Nvidia ShadowPlay; the report does not make it a likely explanation for players who do not.
- Xbox One Game Transcription Override: The index describes freezing or potential crashing when this accessibility setting is enabled. This applies to the specified Xbox One setting, not every platform or accessibility feature.
- Achievement notifications: The connection comes from older community reports. The current official issue index does not establish it as an active, general cause of a joining freeze.
What to do when joining still freezes
- Pin down the symptom. Record whether the freeze happens before the session loads, during the joining transition, or after your character appears. Note whether waiting resolves it or the game crashes.
- Identify your setup. Record your platform and game version, and whether ShadowPlay or the Xbox One Game Transcription Override setting is relevant to your setup.
- Compare with current official tracking. Check the Known Issues list for matching descriptions. Sea of Thieves release notes also direct players to that support index for tracked issues: official release notes.
- Contact support if the match is unclear. Use Sea of Thieves Support with your platform, version, and the timing and outcome of the freeze. A historical forum discussion is not an individualized diagnosis; the official technical overview distinguishes community discussion from dedicated customer support: Sea of Thieves community and support information.
There is not enough current official evidence here to recommend disabling achievement notifications as a universal fix. Avoid treating the historical reports as proof that achievements are responsible for every joining freeze.
