Rare is reportedly targeting an installation-size reduction of at least 50% for Sea of Thieves players using 4K assets on PC and Xbox Series X. The optimization is planned, not yet live: the reporting reviewed gives neither final post-update sizes nor a public release date, and existing players should expect to download the full game again when the new package arrives.
How much smaller is Sea of Thieves expected to be?
The reported savings depend on platform and asset tier. Neowin reported on October 1, 2026, that Rare is targeting at least a 50% reduction for 4K installations on PC and Xbox Series X, and around 30% for non-4K installations and PlayStation 5. These are targets reported by the outlet, not confirmed final sizes.
| Installation type | Reported reduction target |
|---|---|
| PC with 4K assets | At least 50% (Neowin, October 1, 2026) |
| Xbox Series X with 4K assets | At least 50% (Neowin, October 1, 2026) |
| Non-4K installations | Around 30% (Neowin, October 1, 2026) |
| PlayStation 5 | Around 30% (Neowin, October 1, 2026) |
| Other Xbox versions | not stated (Neowin, October 1, 2026) |
The percentage targets do not establish a new exact footprint for any platform. TrueAchievements reported current installed-size estimates of 116 GB on Xbox Series X and 130 GB on PC on October 2, 2026; those are outlet estimates, not official platform requirements or confirmed post-optimization sizes.
Is the smaller installation available now?
No public release date was given in the reporting. The optimization is expected to be tested through Sea of Thieves’ Insider program before reaching the wider player base, so it should not be treated as an update that is already available to everyone.

Will current players have to reinstall the game?
Existing players should expect a full redownload when the optimized package arrives, according to TrueAchievements’ October 2, 2026 report. The transfer may be substantial, but no exact redownload size has been reported. This is a complete game download for the package transition, not just a small routine patch.
Why old update download figures do not tell you the new install size
Sea of Thieves’ official version 2.10.1 release notes listed update downloads of 88.36 GB for Xbox Series X, 102 GB for Microsoft Store PC, and 10.49 GB for Steam. Those figures describe that version-specific download, not the game’s total installed footprint today. The notes also said regular updates would be considerably smaller after the large initial download. See the official version 2.10.1 release notes.
