Rare lists 60 GB as the PC storage requirement for Sea of Thieves, but that figure comes from a system-requirements page last updated June 22, 2023—not a current measurement of the installed game. Rare’s update notes give download sizes for individual patches, not the full game. On Xbox Series X|S, the game must be installed on the console’s internal SSD or an expanded high-speed SSD; a standard external HDD cannot launch it.
How much space does Sea of Thieves take up?
The clearest official full-game storage figure is Rare’s 60 GB PC drive requirement. Rare lists 60 GB across the PC performance tiers, alongside different hardware targets such as a 5.2K RPM HDD for the lowest tier and SSD for higher tiers. The page was last updated June 22, 2023, so 60 GB should be treated as Rare’s published requirement at that time, not a verified current installed size. Rare’s PC system requirements do not establish a current full-install figure for every platform or PC storefront.

How big is the Sea of Thieves download?
A download figure for a particular update is not the size of the complete game. For example, Rare’s Season 20 update, release 3.8.0, had these platform-specific download sizes:
| Platform or store | Season 20 update download |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 3.66 GB |
| Xbox Series S | 3.21 GB |
| Xbox One X | 2.6 GB |
| Xbox One | 3.21 GB |
| Microsoft Store (PC) | 2.7 GB |
| Steam (PC) | 3.3 GB |
| PlayStation 5 | 1.66 GB |
| Battle.net (PC) | 14 GB |
These are the downloads for that release only; they are not current totals for installing Sea of Thieves. Patch size can differ by platform and update. Rare’s release notes for version 3.8.0 provide the figures above.

Which storage can run Sea of Thieves?
Xbox Series X|S
Rare advises installing the game on the console’s internal SSD or an expanded high-speed SSD. Its support notice says, “Please install the game on the console’s internal SSD, or an expanded high speed SSD.” A standard external HDD is no longer compatible for launching Sea of Thieves on these consoles. This restriction is specific to Xbox Series X|S; it should not be assumed to apply to Xbox One, PC, or PlayStation 5. Rare’s Xbox Series X|S external-HDD notice was last updated May 21, 2026.
PC
Rare’s dated PC requirements list 60 GB of drive capacity and distinguish drive types by performance tier. That published requirement does not confirm a current install footprint or a specific free-space buffer for Microsoft Store, Steam, or Battle.net installations.

How to start a PC installation
Use the library or game area for the storefront where you bought or redeemed the game. Rare’s PC install instructions, last updated May 1, 2025, specify:
- Microsoft Store: Open the Microsoft Store library for a purchase or redeemed code.
- Steam: Open the Steam library for a purchase or activated Steam code.
- Battle.net: Open the My Games area for a purchase or redeemed code.
How to check the current space needed
Rare’s cited materials do not establish one current, comparable full-install size and free-space allowance for PC storefronts, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. For the live package size and the space your device needs to proceed, check the current install prompt in the relevant platform store or launcher. Do not use a past update download—or the dated 60 GB PC requirement—as a precise present-day installed-size measurement.
