secur32.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, and missing or corrupted copies should be repaired through Windows rather than downloaded from a DLL website. Start with Windows Update, then run DISM and SFC in that order; reinstall the affected application only if the problem is limited to one program.

What this file actually does

secur32.dll, whose internal description is Security Support Provider Interface, is part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It provides Windows security and authentication functions used by applications and services.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

SSPI allows Windows software to request authentication and security services without implementing every protocol itself. Microsoft documents Kerberos and NTLM security packages as being supplied through Secur32.dll. Programs that connect to network resources, authenticate users, access domains, or use Windows security functions may therefore depend on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX component, .NET runtime, game file, or ordinary third-party application dependency. There is no official universal secur32.dll download package for end users.

  • 3. READY-TO-USE BOOTABLE USB Reusable installation and recovery media that helps eliminate the need to download large system files or create bootable media yourself. Insert the USB drive, open the computer’s boot menu and select the appropriate installation or recovery option.
  • 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
  • 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.

On 64-bit Windows, the native copy is normally located at:

C:WindowsSystem32secur32.dll

A 32-bit application uses the 32-bit Windows system copy through:

C:WindowsSysWOW64secur32.dll

The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit equivalents. Do not copy one file over the other to solve an architecture mismatch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact version, size, signature, and architecture depend on your Windows edition, build, servicing level, and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit. There is no single correct file size or version that applies to every Windows computer.

Causes by symptom

Message or symptom Most likely explanation Best first action
“The program can’t start because secur32.dll is missing” Windows cannot locate the required system component Install updates, then run DISM and SFC
“secur32.dll was not found” The file is missing, inaccessible, or the application is loading the wrong architecture Repair Windows and check whether one or many applications fail
“Error loading secur32.dll” The file may be damaged, incompatible, or blocked by another system problem Run DISM followed by SFC
“The specified module could not be found” The named DLL or a dependency could not be loaded Repair Windows and inspect the exact application error
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” The file may be corrupt, replaced, the wrong architecture, or incompatible with the current installation Do not download a replacement; repair the component store
Several unrelated programs fail A shared Windows component, disk, update, or security event may be involved Treat it as a Windows problem first
Only one old program or game fails The application may have its own damaged files or compatibility issue Repair or reinstall that application
The error began after antivirus action Windows Security may have quarantined the file Check Protection History before restoring anything
SFC cannot repair the file The component store, disk, or repair source may also be damaged Run DISM, check the drive, or use a matching Windows source

The wording varies between Windows versions and applications. A failure in Chrome, a development tool, a video-conferencing program, and another unrelated application can have the same underlying cause because they all rely on Windows security services.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A pending Windows update can contain the correct system files or servicing components needed to restore secur32.dll.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  7. Try the affected application again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Update & Security.
  4. Select Windows Update.
  5. Select Check for updates.
  6. Install the available updates.
  7. Restart and test the application.

If Windows Update itself fails, record the error and continue with DISM and SFC. A failed update can be both the cause of the missing file and the reason Windows cannot repair it automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the most important repair sequence for a genuine missing, corrupted, or replaced secur32.dll.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses the repaired component store to check protected system files and replace damaged copies. Run DISM before SFC, not the other way around.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.

Run this command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. It can appear to pause at a percentage for some time. Do not close the window merely because the progress display has not changed.

When DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the result means

SFC may report that:

  • It did not find any integrity violations.
  • It found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
  • It found corrupt files but could not fix some of them.
  • It could not perform the requested operation.

A successful repair should allow the affected application to start normally after a restart. If SFC reports that it repaired files but the error remains, run the two commands again after restarting and then investigate the application, disk, or security software involved.

If SFC cannot perform the operation, retry it in Safe Mode. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source matching your installed Windows version and edition. A mismatched source can fail or introduce additional problems.

Running these commands manually is useful, but it can be difficult to determine which component changed when the same error returns. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the appropriate Microsoft repair commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can quarantine a system file after a detection or false positive. Do not restore an unknown file simply because its name is secur32.dll.

Check Windows Security Protection History

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an event involving secur32.dll.
  7. Read the detection name, location, action, and date shown by Windows Security.

If Microsoft Defender identified a genuine threat, leave the file quarantined and run a full scan. If you believe it is a false positive, confirm that the item is the authentic Microsoft system file and that the detection has been reviewed before choosing Restore or Allow on device.

After any restoration, run DISM and SFC. A file that was quarantined because of malware or unauthorized modification should not simply be put back without checking the system.

For a serious malware incident, disconnect the computer from untrusted networks, back up important personal files carefully, run Microsoft Defender scans, and consider an offline scan. Do not allow an unfamiliar replacement DLL merely because it has the correct filename.

Fix 4: Check the drive for file-system damage

If secur32.dll disappeared after a hard shutdown, disk failure, repeated blue screens, or an interrupted update, the storage device may be damaging files.

Look for signs such as:

  • Repeated disk errors in Event Viewer
  • Files disappearing or becoming unreadable
  • Very slow file access
  • SFC repeatedly failing to read or replace files
  • Windows updates failing with different errors
  • Bad-block or storage warnings

Back up important files before attempting extensive repairs. Microsoft documents chkdsk /f C: as a way to repair file-system errors.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

chkdsk /f C:

If Windows says the drive is in use, type Y when asked whether to schedule the check for the next restart, then restart the computer.

A file-system repair can correct directory and metadata problems, but it cannot repair a physically failing drive. If errors return, replace the drive after securing a backup and reinstall or repair Windows on healthy storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a Windows update, driver installation, software installation, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:

text
rstrui.exe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or rolled back.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while generally preserving personal files. It does not guarantee that every application setting will remain unchanged, so review the affected-program list first.

After the restore completes, test the application. If the error remains, run DISM and SFC again because the installation may still contain damaged components.

Fix 6: Repair the application when only one program fails

If every other program works and only one application reports secur32.dll, do not immediately replace a Windows file. The application may be damaged, using an incorrect local dependency, or incompatible with the current Windows installation.

Try the application’s own repair option first:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Restart the application.

If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or launcher. Back up application settings and saved data first.

For a game installed through a launcher, use its built-in file verification feature before reinstalling the entire game. In Steam, this is available under the game’s Properties and Installed Files settings.

If reinstalling the application fixes the error, the original problem was likely application-specific. If several unrelated applications still fail, return to Windows servicing, disk checks, and antivirus history.

Fix 7: Check 32-bit and 64-bit architecture

Architecture errors can produce missing, bad-image, entry-point, or “not designed to run” messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • Native 64-bit applications normally use files from C:WindowsSystem32.
  • 32-bit applications normally use the 32-bit system files represented through C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Do not download a 32-bit file because a 32-bit application failed, and do not copy a file from SysWOW64 into System32. Windows manages system-file redirection for applications. Manual replacement can create a worse mismatch or hide component-store corruption.

To check your Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type.

The application itself may have a separate architecture requirement. Check the publisher’s documentation or installer rather than guessing from the file name.

Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM components. secur32.dll is a Windows security-provider DLL, not a normal user-installed COM component.

Running commands such as these is not the supported repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 secur32.dll

A registration error does not prove that the file is missing, and successful registration would not repair a damaged Windows component store. Use DISM and SFC instead.

Fix 9: Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET for this error

The Visual C++ Redistributable is relevant when an error names files such as vcruntime140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. DirectX and .NET installers address their own components. They do not normally repair a damaged Windows-owned secur32.dll.

If the message names a different runtime file, identify that file precisely and use the official Microsoft package for it. Do not install several unrelated redistributables as a substitute for diagnosing the actual error.

Fix 10: Repair Windows after a driver or update regression

A driver does not normally contain secur32.dll, but a driver installation, security product, or Windows update can expose broader system corruption. If the error began immediately after such a change:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Device Manager.
  3. Open it.
  4. Expand the category related to the recently changed hardware.
  5. Right-click the device.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Use Roll Back Driver if it is available and the timing matches.
  9. Otherwise select Update Driver and follow the prompts.
  10. Restart Windows.

Only install drivers from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, which avoids hunting through many hardware pages; its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and rolling back the specific recent driver remains the better test when the timing is clear.

After a driver change, run DISM and SFC if the DLL error continues. Do not expect Device Manager to replace a protected Windows system DLL.

Fix 11: Use an in-place Windows repair

If DISM cannot find source files, SFC cannot repair the installation, and System Restore is unavailable or ineffective, an in-place repair installation can refresh Windows while normally preserving personal files, applications, and settings.

Use official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture. Start the installation from within the running Windows desktop, choose the option to keep personal files and apps, and follow the installer instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not boot from the media and choose a clean installation unless you have deliberately backed up your data and intend to remove the existing installation. Confirm the keep-files option before proceeding.

An in-place repair is especially appropriate when:

  • Several Windows components are damaged
  • Windows Update and DISM repeatedly fail
  • SFC cannot repair protected files
  • The issue began after a failed upgrade
  • The system remains usable but has broad Windows errors

Fix 12: Reset or reinstall Windows as the final step

A reset or clean installation is more disruptive and should follow a backup and malware assessment. Consider it when:

  • The drive is healthy but Windows remains extensively corrupted
  • Malware or unauthorized changes cannot be trusted or removed
  • In-place repair fails
  • System Restore cannot return the system to a working state
  • The computer has multiple unrelated operating-system failures

Use Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, to review the available reset options. Read whether personal files and applications will be removed before confirming.

If the storage device is failing, reinstalling Windows onto the same drive is not a durable fix. Replace or repair the storage problem first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is secur32.dll malware?

Usually, a copy in the Windows system directory is a legitimate Microsoft component. The filename alone does not prove authenticity, and malware can use familiar names. Check the file location, Windows Security detection details, and the result of Windows servicing rather than assuming either malware or safety.

Can I download secur32.dll?

Do not download it from a random DLL archive. The file may have the wrong Windows build, architecture, exports, signature, or malicious content, and copying it can conceal the original component-store or disk problem. Restore it through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, official Windows installation media, or an application repair when only one application is affected.

Why do several applications fail at once?

They may all rely on the same Windows security component. Multiple unrelated failures point toward Windows corruption, an interrupted update, disk damage, antivirus quarantine, or unauthorized modification rather than several applications independently losing the same file.

Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix secur32.dll?

Normally, no. Visual C++ repairs files belonging to the Visual C++ runtime, not this Windows security-provider DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy secur32.dll into an application’s folder?

No. Copying a system DLL into an application directory can create an incorrect version or architecture and may expose the application to DLL search-order problems. Repair Windows or reinstall the application from its official source.

What if a new Windows user profile works?

That suggests a profile-specific configuration or application issue, but it does not prove that secur32.dll is healthy. Test the same executable from the original profile and inspect the application’s logs before deciding whether to replace the profile.

What information should I provide when asking for help?

Include the exact error text, Windows version and build, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, the affected programs, when the issue began, any recent update or driver change, antivirus Protection History results, and the final messages from DISM and SFC. Do not include a downloaded DLL as a proposed fix.
