The Genesis Mini 2 and Nintendo Switch Online’s Genesis library offer different ways to play classic Sega games. SEGA’s dedicated mini console comes with 60 classic titles, including Sega CD games; Nintendo’s collection is digital access bundled with a qualifying Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The better fit depends on the specific games you want, whether you already use a Switch, and what you value beyond Genesis games.
What you’re choosing between
The SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is a compact, standalone console styled after the Genesis Model 2. SEGA says it includes 60 classic titles and Sega CD games, and that original Genesis Mini controllers are compatible. It connects to a display over HDMI.

Compare the games you actually want
SEGA’s published count is 60 classic titles, including Sega CD games. That is a manufacturer-stated count, not a guarantee that all titles are unique to the Mini 2 or that the two services’ libraries match. Nintendo’s current US collection page lists titles such as Alien Soldier, Beyond Oasis, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Contra: Hard Corps, Earthworm Jim, Ecco the Dolphin, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, M.U.S.H.A., Phantasy Star IV, Shining Force II, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Streets of Rage 2. Rank #3
- Check your must-play games. Compare each title against both current official lists, paying particular attention to Sega CD games if those matter to you.
- Account for what you already own. If you have a Switch and already pay for Expansion Pack benefits, the Genesis library is an added part of that membership. If you do not, include the cost of the qualifying tier rather than treating the game collection as a standalone purchase.
- Include the rest of the membership. Expansion Pack bundles other retro libraries and online service benefits. Consider whether you would use those too, rather than pricing the membership as if it only provides Genesis games.
- Choose the access model you prefer. The Mini 2 is dedicated hardware with a packaged controller; Nintendo’s collection is tied to membership and works across supported Switch modes.
- Compare the features that matter to your play. Nintendo lists rewind, save states and online play with friends. If you want those conveniences or handheld play, weigh them against the Mini 2’s physical-console setup.
- Check local prices and availability before calculating a break-even point. Use the current price in your region and the number of months you expect to subscribe; neither a fixed break-even period nor a current stock position is established by the cited official pages.
