The “DNA” is a character-art concept: Sega says it designed and synthesized DNA to represent Sonic’s fictional traits, not that the figure contains a sample from a real hedgehog.
Does the Sonic figure really contain DNA?
According to Sega, the figure contains synthesized DNA that the project designed around Sonic’s recognizable character traits. Sega describes sorting Sonic’s appearance, personality and abilities into traits, designing them as DNA, synthesizing that DNA, then enclosing it inside the figure with a protective capsule.

The traits Sega names include Sonic’s blue body, super-speed, boost and spin abilities, adventurous nature, free and cool personality, and inability to swim. They are fictional attributes translated into the artwork’s DNA concept—not evidence of an actual Sonic or a biological sample.

How much does Sega’s Sonic DNA figure cost?
Famitsu reported the price as ¥3,300,000 including tax on October 9, 2026. That is the reported Japanese list price behind the approximately $21,000 headline; Sega’s sources do not give an official dollar-denominated price, and a converted amount depends on the exchange rate and date.
The figure was described as life-size, serial-numbered and made to order. Sega created it for Sonic’s 35th anniversary. Those details distinguish it from a conventional character statue, but the cited reports do not establish a current price or specification for any particular alternative Sonic figure.

Is the Sonic DNA figure on display in Tokyo?
Sega announced a display at SEGA STORE TOKYO, on the sixth floor of Shibuya PARCO, beginning June 23, 2026. Sonic Channel’s July 1 follow-up said the display was expected to continue until around mid-September. That announced window has passed, so it should not be treated as a current viewing opportunity.
Famitsu also reported on October 9 that the physical figure was on display at the “SONIC The Exhibition – ACROSS GENERATIONS –” venue in Tokyo while reservations were open. Its report does not establish access beyond the publication date. Confirm the venue’s current schedule before visiting.

Why Sega made a DNA-themed Sonic collectible
The figure presents Sonic’s identity as something that can be expressed through a designed object: Sega’s fictional traits become the basis for its synthesized-DNA concept, which is then enclosed inside the life-size figure. It is best understood as a character-design art collectible rather than a scientific claim about a real organism.

Sega’s June 16, 2026 announcement also says the Sonic series has surpassed 1.77 billion units, counting full games and free-to-play titles together. That is Sega’s combined series figure, not a total for paid game sales alone.
