This is a spoiler-light framework for deciding what to tackle next in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, with a clearly marked story-choice warning before the route reaches its major fork. Treat it as a recommended sequence—not a required play style. The available sources confirm the game’s regions and the importance of route planning, but do not establish a fully verified, step-by-step order for every area, so this guide avoids presenting uncertain transitions as definitive.
How to use this progress route
A progress route connects regions, checkpoints, bosses, shortcuts, and NPC tasks so you can choose your next objective without mistaking one suggested order for the only valid one. Activision’s description of the official guide explains that its recommended route uses maps and step-by-step guidance to help players avoid missing important content, alongside separate area walkthroughs and optional sections (Activision’s guide announcement).

- For a first playthrough: follow the main-story objective, explore side paths when you find them, and pause at story-choice prompts to check their consequences.
- For broad completion: track area walkthroughs, collectibles, bosses, and ending requirements separately. They are distinct guide categories, not one interchangeable checklist.
- For mechanics details: check your game version before relying on older instructions. FromSoftware’s Windows manual identifies itself as version 1.05 and notes that updates may change specifications (Windows manual).
Region checklist: what the route needs to cover
Use these region names as a coverage checklist rather than a guaranteed sequence. PowerPyx’s guide hub indexes walkthroughs for each of these locations, but its index alone does not establish one canonical order (PowerPyx guide hub).
- Ashina Reservoir
- Ashina Outskirts
- Hirata Estate
- Ashina Castle
- Abandoned Dungeon
- Senpou Temple / Mt. Kongo
- Ashina Depths
- Sunken Valley
- Fountainhead Palace
As you move through the game, record the next open objective and any routes or NPC interactions that remain unresolved. The official guide description specifically includes shortcuts, enemy and boss guidance, and NPC interactions and eavesdropping; those are useful route annotations, not decorative extras (Activision’s guide announcement).

Stop before the major story choice
Major spoilers and ending lockout warning: the choice at Ashina Castle determines whether you continue into later regions and affects which ending paths remain available. Do not select an option simply to see what happens if your goal is to explore the full game in the same playthrough.
A community endings reference describes four endings and reports that choosing Shura ends the game after two fights, making Fountainhead Palace and Dragon Flash inaccessible on that run. It also says the Return quest line must be completed before defeating the Divine Dragon (community endings reference). These are consequential route warnings, but the exact trigger requirements should be checked against a detailed walkthrough before acting on them.

Optional detours and completion cleanup
Keep optional exploration and completion goals in their own checklist rather than assuming that finishing the main route covers everything. A useful cleanup list is:
- Return to open areas to follow unresolved paths and shortcuts.
- Review optional-area walkthroughs and NPC interactions before progressing beyond major story decisions.
- Track collectibles, bosses, and endings independently; the guide hub indexes these separately from area walkthroughs (PowerPyx guide hub).
- For broad completion, compare your remaining tasks against a dedicated ending checklist rather than relying on a region list alone.
Choosing between a blind-friendly and completionist route
| What to compare | Blind-friendly route | Completionist route |
|---|---|---|
| Spoilers | Minimize boss and ending details; identify decision pauses without revealing every outcome. | Accept explicit boss and ending spoilers to track requirements and branches. |
| Optional areas and side quests | Prioritize the next main objective; explore naturally when paths appear. | Include optional areas, NPC tasks, and ending-dependent prerequisites. |
| Missable content | Flag major story decisions before the player reaches them. | List each relevant prerequisite and the point before which it must be completed. |
| Collectibles and boss variants | Usually left to exploration or a later cleanup pass. | Track with dedicated collectible and boss checklists; a region route alone is not enough. |
| Version | Verify mechanics advice against the version in use. | Do the same, especially when following older route instructions; the Windows manual consulted here is version 1.05 and warns that updates may change specifications (FromSoftware manual). |
What the official guide adds
Activision described its official guide as including a full area walkthrough in recommended order, optional sections and shortcuts, and a separate progression guide with area maps and a step-by-step route. The publisher reported that the guide was 592 pages and more than 250,000 words in 2019; those figures describe the book, not the game’s area count or completion time (Activision announcement). Check current availability independently if you prefer a printed walkthrough.
