sendcom.dll Missing: Find the Sony Firmware Tool on Windows

sendcom.dll may trigger messages such as “This application failed to start because sendcom.dll was not found” or “The program can’t start because sendcom.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “Error loading sendcom.dll,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “The file sendcom.dll is missing or corrupted.”

The 60-second answer

sendcom.dll is a genuine legacy Sony component, not a Windows system file. The strongest evidence connects it to Sony optical-drive firmware updaters, particularly packages for the Sony DRU-510A and DRX-510UL.

The safest fix is to restore the complete Sony updater package for the exact drive model. Do not download a standalone copy of sendcom.dll, put it in System32, or register it with regsvr32. The DLL may be missing because the updater package is incomplete, antivirus software quarantined it, an old startup entry still points to an uninstalled Sony program, or the updater cannot work correctly on modern Windows.

Sony’s current support page for the DRX-510UL does not currently provide downloads. If Sony no longer hosts the package for your model, check original installation media, a known-good backup, or a verifiable archive. Keep every file from the original package together.

What is sendcom.dll?

The file’s internal description is Sony Send Command DLL, and its publisher is identified as Sony Corporation. It is a 32-bit Win32 application DLL used by legacy Sony software.

The clearest public package evidence comes from Sony optical-drive firmware files. A documented updater package for the DRU-510A and DRX-510UL contains:

  • 510A_10c.exe
  • Sendcom.dll
  • SENDCOM.vxd

That combination indicates that sendcom.dll is part of an old firmware-update tool rather than a general Windows runtime. The updater uses the helper alongside other files and, depending on the package, legacy driver components. Replacing only the DLL does not recreate that environment.

The exact application requesting the file cannot be identified from the filename alone. If the message appears when launching an unrelated application, first confirm which executable is actually loading it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is sendcom.dll part of Windows?

No. Windows does not normally install sendcom.dll, and it is not a standard component of:

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
  • DirectX
  • .NET
  • Windows system repair packages

Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are for system components and correctly installed shared libraries. Putting an unrelated legacy DLL there can create search-order problems and still leave the original Sony application incomplete.

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Available file records identify sendcom.dll as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. There is no dependable evidence of a separate 64-bit build.

A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit programs through its compatibility layer. That does not turn a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit DLL. A legacy updater can still fail because of an obsolete driver, unsupported hardware interface, permissions, or an installer that expects an older version of Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify the program requesting the DLL

Before repairing Windows or downloading anything, find the parent application. The same filename can be requested by different programs, and the correct repair depends on that program.

Check the error window

Look at the title bar and the text surrounding the error. It may identify:

  • A Sony firmware updater
  • An optical-drive utility
  • A shortcut in the Start menu
  • A program launched during sign-in
  • A utility restored from an old disk image

If the error appears only when you insert a disc, open an old Sony utility, or run a firmware executable, the Sony updater connection is likely.

Inspect the shortcut

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, read Target and Start in.
  4. Note the executable name and its folder.
  5. Open that folder in File Explorer.
  6. Check whether other Sony files, such as a firmware executable or SENDCOM.vxd, are present.

If the target points to a deleted folder or an old Sony program that you no longer use, the error may be an orphaned shortcut rather than a missing dependency that needs restoring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check startup entries

If the message appears immediately after signing in:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for a Sony updater, optical-drive utility, firmware tool, or unknown entry.
  4. Right-click a suspicious entry and select Open file location.
  5. If the folder is empty or the program is no longer needed, choose Disable in Task Manager.
  6. Restart Windows.

For a more complete check:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Startup.
  4. Turn off a leftover Sony entry that points to software you have intentionally removed.

Do not disable entries at random. If the error disappears after disabling a Sony startup item, you have identified the trigger. You can then remove the obsolete application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.

Fix 1: Restore the complete Sony updater package

This is the most appropriate repair when the error appears while updating a Sony optical drive.

Find the exact hardware model

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
  4. Write down the complete drive model.
  5. Right-click the drive and select Properties.
  6. Open the Details tab.
  7. Select Hardware Ids from the Property menu if you need additional identification.

Do not assume that a package for one Sony drive is safe for another. Firmware is hardware-specific. A wrong firmware image or interrupted update can permanently damage the drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Obtain the original package

Use this order:

  1. Sony’s support pages for the exact drive model.
  2. Original Sony installation media.
  3. A backup made before the old computer was retired.
  4. A verifiable archive containing the complete original package.

Sony’s current DRX-510UL support page states that no downloads are presently available. Availability can differ by model, region, and product page, so search by the exact model rather than by sendcom.dll.

Avoid any package that contains only a DLL. A suitable firmware archive should include the updater executable and the other files supplied with it. For the documented Sony package, that means the executable is kept beside Sendcom.dll and SENDCOM.vxd.

Run the package from one folder

  1. Create a folder such as C:SonyFirmware.
  2. Extract every file from the archive into that folder.
  3. Do not rename the files.
  4. Right-click the firmware updater executable.
  5. Select Properties and check Digital Signatures if a signature is present.
  6. Open the Compatibility tab.
  7. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for and try the older Windows version recommended by the original Sony instructions.
  8. Select Run this program as an administrator.
  9. Click Apply, then OK.
  10. Close other programs.
  11. Run the updater from the extracted folder.

Follow the original firmware instructions exactly. Do not power off the computer, disconnect the drive, or interrupt the process while firmware is being written.

How to tell whether it worked

The updater should start without the missing-file message and should identify the expected Sony drive. Stop if it reports an unexpected model, an incompatible firmware image, or a communication failure. A successful launch does not prove that the firmware update is safe to perform on modern Windows.

  • The durable, light-weight design of the Turbo Attaché 3 USB 3.0 Flash Drive is the essential mobile storage solution
  • Perfect for transferring large files such as movies, videos, photos, music & documents
  • Transfer speeds up to 10 times faster than standard USB 2.0 flash drives
  • Convenient sliding collar, and cap-less design protects your content when not in use
  • Compatible with most PC and Mac laptop and desktop computers with USB 3.0 ports

If the same error returns, confirm that:

  • Sendcom.dll is in the same folder as the updater.
  • The archive was fully extracted rather than opened inside a compressed folder.
  • The file was not removed by antivirus software.
  • You have the package for the exact drive model.
  • The updater is not relying on a missing legacy driver.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old helper DLL, especially when the file comes from an old firmware package. A missing file that existed previously may indicate quarantine or accidental deletion.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Under Current threats, select Protection history.
  6. Review entries from the time the Sony updater stopped working.
  7. Open a matching entry to see the file path and action taken.

Do not restore the file merely because its name is familiar. Restore it only when the complete Sony package is trusted and the file’s location matches that package. Microsoft warns that allowing a quarantined file can expose the computer if it is malicious.

The safer approach is usually to obtain a clean, complete vendor package and scan it before extraction. Do not create a Defender exclusion just to force the updater to launch.

How to tell whether it worked

After restoring or reinstalling the complete package, start the updater again from its original folder. If the error changes from “missing” to a hardware or compatibility message, the DLL is being found and the remaining problem is elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows Security detects the file again, stop. Do not repeatedly restore it or disable protection. Treat the detection as a reason to find a clean source and verify the calling program.

Fix 3: Remove an orphaned Sony startup entry or application

Sometimes Windows is not trying to start a useful updater. It is trying to launch a leftover command from software that was removed incompletely.

Remove the obsolete application

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps.
  4. Search for Sony, optical-drive, firmware, or disc-writing software.
  5. Select the relevant entry.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows.

If the application is not listed, inspect the shortcut or startup entry that launched it. Remove only the entry you have identified as obsolete.

Check Task Scheduler

Some old utilities use a scheduled task rather than the normal Startup list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Task Scheduler.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Review tasks whose actions point to an old Sony folder or missing executable.
  6. Right-click a task and choose Properties.
  7. Confirm the Actions tab shows the obsolete program.
  8. Disable or delete that task if you no longer need it.

How to tell whether it worked

Restart Windows. If the error no longer appears and you do not need the old updater, the orphaned reference was the cause. If you still need the Sony drive utility, reinstall its complete package instead of deleting its startup entry.

Fix 4: Check compatibility, permissions, and architecture

A 32-bit legacy application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it may need compatibility settings or administrator rights.

  1. Locate the Sony updater executable.
  2. Right-click it and select Properties.
  3. Open Compatibility.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose the older Windows release specified by the original instructions.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator.
  7. Click Apply and OK.
  8. Run the program from the folder containing all its files.

Do not copy the DLL into arbitrary Windows folders to address an architecture problem. A 32-bit application normally searches its own application directory first. A missing dependency may also produce “The specified module could not be found” even when sendcom.dll is present.

If Device Manager shows a warning icon on the optical drive:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
  3. Right-click the drive.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Read the message under Device status.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Use Update Driver only when a suitable driver is available through Windows or the hardware vendor.
  8. Restart after making a driver change.

Do not update firmware and device drivers at the same time unless the vendor’s instructions require it. Change one thing, restart, and test.

When manually updating drivers, hunting through versions and guessing which of several drivers is stale can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show what it identifies; its full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the Sony firmware package remains the definitive repair for this file.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only if other programs are failing

sendcom.dll is a third-party Sony DLL, so Windows repair commands will not normally restore it. Use them when multiple Windows applications are malfunctioning, system files are damaged, or updates are failing.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete.

Do not close the window while it is working. A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run System File Checker

Open an administrator Command Prompt again if necessary and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. If Windows reports that it repaired corrupt files, restart and test the Sony program. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the Windows system files are not the likely cause of sendcom.dll.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is an incomplete Sony package. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not a replacement for reinstalling the Sony application that owns this DLL.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore may help if sendcom.dll disappeared immediately after removing Sony software, installing a driver, or applying another system change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that will be changed.
  6. Select Close, then Next.
  7. Confirm the restore operation.

System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove recently installed programs or drivers. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the complete Sony package repair instead.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is a registration tool for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for restoring missing DLLs.

Best Value
SANDISK 256GB Ultra, USB-A Flash Drive, Up to 130MB/s Read Speeds
  • Transfer speeds up to 10x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); up to 130MB/s read speed; USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
  • Backward compatible with USB 2.0
  • Secure file encryption and password protection(2)

There is no reliable Sony documentation showing that this helper should be registered. Running commands such as these is therefore not a normal fix:

regsvr32 sendcom.dll

A registration error does not prove that the file is bad. It may simply mean that the DLL was never designed to be registered.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

A standalone DLL download can be:

  • The wrong build
  • The wrong architecture
  • Missing dependencies
  • Modified or malicious
  • From a different Sony package
  • Unable to repair the missing updater files around it

Even if copying it makes the first message disappear, the firmware utility may still fail when it tries to load another component. It can also leave Windows searching a system folder before the correct application folder.

Use Sony support, original media, a trusted backup, or a verifiable archive containing the complete package. Keep the files together and scan the package before running it.

What if the Sony package cannot be found?

First identify the exact drive model and the executable that requested the file. Then:

  1. Search Sony support by the model, not by the DLL filename.
  2. Check original discs and archived computer backups.
  3. Look for the complete updater rather than Sendcom.dll alone.
  4. Compare the archive contents with the original instructions.
  5. Run the updater only if it clearly matches the hardware.
  6. Stop if the package cannot be verified.

If the updater requires an older Windows environment, use one only when the hardware vendor’s instructions permit it. Firmware updates can fail on modern systems because of driver and hardware-interface changes, even when the DLL is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is sendcom.dll malware?

The file is a genuine legacy Sony component when it comes from a trusted Sony firmware package. Its name alone does not prove that a copy is safe. If Windows Security detects a copy from an unknown folder or download, quarantine it and obtain a clean complete package.

Does sendcom.dll belong to the Sony DRU-510A?

The strongest documented association is with Sony firmware packages for the DRU-510A and DRX-510UL. The filename alone cannot prove which application produced a particular reader’s error.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Usually no. There is no reliable evidence connecting this Sony helper DLL to those runtimes. Install a runtime only when the calling application specifically documents that requirement.

Should I copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Restore the complete Sony application package to its own folder. A 32-bit DLL is not a substitute for a 64-bit Windows component, and system-folder copying can create additional DLL-loading problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say the module could not be found when the DLL is present?

The message can refer to a dependency required by sendcom.dll, not necessarily the DLL itself. It can also indicate that the application is searching the wrong folder or that a legacy driver is unavailable.

Will Windows 11 or Windows 10 run the updater?

Some 32-bit legacy applications run through Windows compatibility support, but an old firmware updater may depend on drivers or hardware interfaces that current Windows versions no longer support. Compatibility mode and administrator rights may help, but they do not guarantee a safe firmware update.

What is the correct final repair?

Identify the calling executable and drive model, then restore the matching complete Sony package. If the updater is obsolete and no longer needed, remove its orphaned shortcut or startup entry instead of installing a random replacement DLL.
