sensorperformanceevents.dll errors usually mean that Windows or a particular application cannot load a required component. The safest repair is to identify whether the error appears during Windows startup or only when one program launches, then repair that layer instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Do not download this file from a random DLL website. A download may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or belong to a different Windows build. It can also hide the real problem, such as a damaged application installation, antivirus quarantine, or Windows component corruption.

What is sensorperformanceevents.dll?
Public file records associate sensorperformanceevents.dll with Microsoft’s internal Sensors Performance Events functionality. However, Microsoft does not publish a standalone download page that documents this DLL by name, and exact Windows version coverage, file sizes, build numbers, and package membership are not independently verified.
For troubleshooting, treat the error according to where it appears:
#1 Best Overall

- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- If Windows reports the error at startup or several applications fail, repair Windows first.
- If only one game or application reports it, repair or reinstall that program from its official installer.
- If the file exists outside the normal Windows directories, verify its origin and Microsoft signature before trusting it.
- If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” suspect corruption, an incompatible binary, or a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.
The names System32 and SysWOW64 are confusing. On 64-bit Windows, C:WindowsSystem32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while C:WindowsSysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Do not copy a file between them merely because the names look similar. The correct copy depends on the program loading it.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Windows servicing can restore protected components without requiring a separate DLL download.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available cumulative or quality updates.
- Restart the computer when Windows asks.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again.
- Launch the affected application.
If the error disappears, the missing or damaged component was likely restored through Windows servicing. If it remains, continue with the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC uses that store to repair protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
Microsoft documents this repair process in its System File Checker instructions and Windows image repair guidance.
If SFC says it repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the application may be requesting the DLL incorrectly, or the problem may be limited to that application.
If DISM says that source files cannot be found, Windows may need matching installation media. The media should match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. Microsoft provides official media through its Windows download page. If DISM still cannot repair the image, proceed to a Windows in-place repair installation rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–40 minutes
If the message appears only when starting one game or program, the application is the leading suspect. It may have an incomplete installation, a stale dependency, or an installer that incorrectly expects a Windows internal component.

Use the program’s repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application.
Some desktop programs instead provide Repair in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Select the program, choose Change, and follow its repair wizard.
Update or verify the program
For a game, open its official launcher and use its file-verification or repair function. For other software, install the latest release from the developer’s official source. Do not obtain an isolated DLL from a download site.
If repair and verification do not help:
- Back up the program’s settings or saved data if necessary.
- Uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the developer’s official website or the store where you purchased it.
- Install it again.
- Launch it before adding modifications, overlays, or third-party plugins.
If reinstalling the application fixes the error, the application was missing or incorrectly requesting the component. Reinstalling that program remains the definitive fix in this situation.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a file after an update, cleanup operation, or false detection.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
sensorperformanceevents.dll. - Review the detected path and action.
- Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar.
Restore it only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- It was located in the expected Windows directory.
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft.
- A second security scan finds no threat.
- The detection is clearly identified as a false positive.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to copy a DLL. If the file was in an unexpected user profile or application directory, treat it as suspicious and run a full scan. For a deeper check, use Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 5: Try System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup utility, or security-product action.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back system files and installed software, but it does not replace personal documents. If no suitable restore point exists, move to the repair-installation path.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the trigger points to hardware
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Sensors-related functionality can be affected by device drivers, but a driver update is not the first response to an application-only error. Use this step if the problem began after hardware changes, Device Manager warnings, or a driver update.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the failing hardware, such as Sensors, System devices, or Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
You can also select Properties > Driver to review whether Roll Back Driver is available. Do not remove an unknown device or install a random driver package simply because its name mentions sensors.

When identifying outdated drivers across many devices is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan finds; driver installation is handled by the full version, but it is optional and cannot replace repairing the application that owns the dependency.
Fix 7: Use a Windows repair installation
Time needed: 30–90 minutes
A repair installation is appropriate when:
- DISM cannot repair the component store.
- SFC repeatedly reports corruption.
- Windows files disappear again.
- Multiple programs show system DLL errors.
- The problem began after a failed update or rollback.
Use installation media that matches your Windows edition, language, and architecture. Start setup.exe from inside Windows and choose the option to keep personal files and applications when offered. Read each screen carefully before continuing.
Back up important files first. If the repair installation cannot complete, persistent file loss may indicate disk or filesystem corruption. Check Event Viewer for storage errors and consider hardware testing before repeatedly reinstalling Windows.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a COM self-registration function such as DllRegisterServer.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A missing or corrupted sensorperformanceevents.dll does not become valid merely because it was registered. Running the command may produce another error and can distract from the real repair. Microsoft explains the command’s intended use in its regsvr32 documentation.
Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register its COM component and provides the correct architecture-specific command.
How to tell what failed
The wording provides useful clues:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because sensorperformanceevents.dll was not found” usually means the loader could not locate the required file.
- “The program can’t start because sensorperformanceevents.dll is missing from your computer” usually points to a missing dependency or incomplete installation.
- “sensorperformanceevents.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” more strongly suggests corruption, an invalid binary, or an architecture mismatch.
A file missing from one directory is not automatically proof of corruption. Windows editions and builds can differ, and a third-party program may be requesting a component it should not request. If the error occurs only in one application, SFC can report a healthy Windows installation while that application remains broken.

Likely causes
The common causes, in practical order, are:
- A protected Windows file was corrupted or deleted.
- Windows servicing or an update rollback was incomplete.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The affected application has an incomplete or incorrect dependency.
- The available binary has the wrong architecture or is invalid.
- Disk or filesystem corruption is causing files to disappear.
- Malware or an unauthorized system modification changed the loading path.
A program that loads a 32-bit dependency needs the correct 32-bit component, while a 64-bit program needs the 64-bit equivalent. Never solve an architecture problem by downloading a similarly named file and placing it in System32 or SysWOW64.

Is sensorperformanceevents.dll a Windows file or an application file?
Public records associate it with Microsoft’s Sensors Performance Events functionality, but an official Microsoft page documenting this DLL by name was not located. Because the error may be raised by a particular application, repair Windows first when it affects multiple programs and repair the application when only one program fails.
Should I expect it in System32, SysWOW64, or both?
Do not assume every Windows installation contains the file in both locations. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally for 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 is for 32-bit system files. Build, edition, and application architecture all matter.
Can SFC or DISM restore it?
They can restore protected Windows components when the file belongs to the installed Windows image and the component store is healthy or repairable. They will not fix an application that incorrectly declares the dependency.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a first step. Reinstall those runtimes only when the affected application separately identifies that runtime as missing. They are not established as the correct package for sensorperformanceevents.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a Windows repair install always required?
No. Windows Update, DISM, SFC, application repair, quarantine review, or System Restore may solve the problem. Use a repair installation when Windows servicing remains damaged or system files continue disappearing.
Should I manually copy the DLL from another PC?
No. The correct version, architecture, signature, servicing metadata, and dependent files all matter. Manual copying can create version conflicts or introduce malware without repairing the underlying cause.
