Seolhwa Dungeon vs. Hades and Dead Cells: How Runs and Progression Compare

Seolhwa Dungeon is the strictest and most rules-driven game of the three. Every action consumes a turn, death sends you back to the first floor, and the dungeon is drawn again. Hades makes failed attempts part of an ongoing story, while Dead Cells makes death permanent for the run but gradually opens new levels and routes. Choose Seolhwa Dungeon for deliberate Korean-folklore tactics, Hades for fast combat tied to persistent narrative progress, or Dead Cells for movement mastery and a map that expands through unlocks.

What each game is trying to make you feel

These games share the broad run-based structure usually associated with roguelikes and roguelites: you enter a changing sequence of encounters, build power during the attempt, and risk losing the run. Their progression philosophies are different enough that “which is better?” has no universal answer.

Seolhwa Dungeon is listed by Google Play as a turn-based roguelike built from Korean folklore. Its challenge is decision quality. You choose when to move, attack, use a spell, approach an encounter or avoid danger, and each choice is resolved within a strict turn order.

Hades, described by Supergiant Games as a rogue-like dungeon crawler, turns each escape attempt into both an action challenge and another chapter in the story of the Underworld. A failed run returns you to the hub, but the narrative relationship loop continues.

Dead Cells, described by Motion Twin as a rogue-lite, Castlevania-inspired action-platformer, puts the emphasis on real-time movement, enemy patterns and route selection. You die without checkpoints, then use accumulated unlocks to reach different levels and paths on future runs.

How a Seolhwa Dungeon run works

Every decision is a turn

Seolhwa Dungeon’s defining rule is that play proceeds one turn at a time. The listing calls it a turn-based roguelike, so movement, attacks, positioning and other actions are evaluated through discrete turns rather than continuous reflex play. That changes what “skill” means: reading a situation, preserving a safe position and understanding enemy behavior matter as much as choosing a powerful ability.

Line of sight and turn order are central to the tactical layer. A poor approach can expose you to an attack before you can respond; a patient move can keep an enemy out of range or create a better angle. The game therefore rewards planning several actions ahead instead of relying on a rapid input sequence.

Death is a complete floor-one reset

When your character dies, the attempt ends and you are sent back to the first floor. The dungeon is newly drawn for the next run, so the exact route and encounter arrangement are not preserved. There are no checkpoints that let you resume from a later floor.

This is stricter than a system in which only the current room resets. You must rebuild your position through the entire run, and your knowledge has to be transferable rather than dependent on memorizing one fixed map. The practical result is a high-stakes loop: every unexplored branch, risky fight and optional folklore encounter has to be weighed against the value of reaching the next floor.

Build variety is explicit

The 2026 Google Play listing from Sungki Soft gives unusually concrete scope for the build system:

  • 14 playable species.
  • 12 classes.
  • Eight gods, each associated with taboos.
  • One spell card offered at each level, selected from a pool of 32.
  • A codex recording 150 yokai, including their tales, weaknesses and habits.

These systems make a run more than a sequence of random equipment drops. Species and class establish the character’s baseline identity; a god’s taboo introduces a rule or restriction that can shape decisions; and level-up cards determine how the build develops during that attempt. Codex discoveries add an information layer: learning a yokai’s weakness or habit can change how you evaluate the same kind of encounter on a later run.

Encounters are choices with costs

The official listing illustrates the game’s folklore encounters with decisions such as bowing to a funeral procession, blocking it, wrestling a dokkaebi or accepting a meal from the snail maiden. These are not presented as consequence-free flavor text. Each option has a cost, so an apparently helpful interaction can trade immediate safety, resources or position for a different advantage.

That design makes Seolhwa’s variety tactical and rules-based. Two runs can differ because the dungeon layout changes, but also because the same event is approached with a different class, taboo, spell card or understanding of a creature’s habits. The player is solving a chain of local problems under a global permadeath condition.

Run length and format

The listing describes runs lasting approximately 40 minutes to two hours. That is a broad window rather than a guaranteed session length: a cautious attempt that reaches deeper floors can occupy much more time than an early death. Seolhwa supports one-handed portrait play and offline single-player use, making it structurally different from the two real-time action games in this comparison.

What survives death in Seolhwa Dungeon?

The immediate run does not survive. You lose your floor position and start again from floor one in a redrawn dungeon. The evidence for Seolhwa’s longer-term systems describes species, classes, gods and taboos, level-up cards and codex discoveries as sources of future variety, but it does not state that a particular amount of health, equipment or currency is carried over after death.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is therefore safest to think of persistence in Seolhwa as knowledge and future possibility, not as a documented mid-run checkpoint or a guaranteed permanent stat increase. You learn how yokai behave, discover entries in the 150-creature codex, and try different combinations from the available species, classes, gods and spell cards. Unless the game’s current interface explicitly labels an item or unlock as permanent, do not assume that a run’s equipment or floor progress will remain.

How Hades handles runs and progression

Fast action is the immediate test

Supergiant Games describes Hades as a rogue-like dungeon crawler in which the player defies the god of the dead while hacking and slashing through the Greek Underworld. Combat is real-time: attacks, movement, dodges and abilities happen continuously, and success depends on execution as well as build choices.

That tempo produces a different learning curve from Seolhwa. You are learning enemy attack cues, spacing and room flow while keeping control of the character. A mistake can be punished immediately, but a successful dodge or attack chain can also solve a problem before it becomes a long tactical calculation.

A failed escape is still story progress

Hades’s key progression promise is that a failed escape attempt returns you to the hub while the story and broader progression continue. The death screen is not a total narrative reset. Characters can react to the attempt, relationships and plot threads can advance, and the next run begins with the context of what happened previously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This creates a loop in which practice and story reinforce each other. Mechanical failure can reveal dialogue or a new narrative beat, so restarting does not feel like repeating an empty sequence. The official description emphasizes persistent, progressing story rather than publishing a complete inventory of every currency, upgrade tree or boon count; specific numerical claims about those systems are not established here.

What this means for the player

Hades is the most forgiving of the three in terms of emotional momentum. You may lose the current escape attempt, but the game gives that failure a place in the continuing arc. Players who want each run to answer “what happens next?” will find that structure more motivating than a purely mechanical reset.

How Dead Cells handles runs and progression

Real-time combat with no checkpoints

Motion Twin calls Dead Cells a rogue-lite, Castlevania-inspired action-platformer and highlights “souls-lite combat” with the threat of permadeath. Its official description is direct: there are no checkpoints, and the loop is “kill, die, learn, repeat.” Combat is real-time 2D action built around movement, timing, enemy patterns and bosses.

Like Seolhwa, Dead Cells ends the current run when you die. Unlike Seolhwa, the central challenge is not deciding one action per turn. You must read animations while moving, jump, evade and attack in a continuous space. Mastery is partly about recognizing when an enemy is vulnerable and partly about controlling the environment so several threats do not overwhelm you at once.

Deaths unlock a larger route network

Dead Cells explicitly uses nonlinear progression. Deaths contribute to unlocking new levels, and those levels let you take different paths on later attempts. The immediate run is disposable, but the set of destinations available to future runs expands.

That persistence changes the meaning of failure. You are not simply trying to repeat the same route with better execution. Unlocks can present a choice between branches, and route selection becomes part of the build and difficulty decision. One path may suit a movement-focused approach; another may offer a different enemy mix or boss sequence. The official material establishes the existence of unlockable levels and branching routes, but not a complete list of weapons, currencies or exact unlock costs.

What this means for the player

Dead Cells is the strongest fit if you want your long-term map to change. The character may die and the current run may vanish, but the world’s route structure becomes broader. Progress is therefore spatial and mechanical: you learn patterns, improve movement, unlock destinations and choose a new route.

Three ways the games define progression

Combat tempo: planning versus execution

Game Primary skill test Typical decision pressure
Seolhwa Dungeon Turn order, positioning, line of sight and consequence management. Whether the next single action creates a safe sequence or exposes you to avoidable danger.
Hades Real-time attacks, dodges, room control and adapting during an escape. Whether to commit to damage, reposition or evade while threats are active.
Dead Cells 2D movement, attack timing, enemy-pattern recognition and route mastery. Whether to engage, pass through, explore a branch or preserve resources for harder rooms.

Choose Seolhwa if you prefer enough time to evaluate a board-like situation. Choose Hades if you want combat and narrative momentum in the same loop. Choose Dead Cells if the pleasure comes from precise movement and gradually understanding a demanding action system.

What death removes

  • Seolhwa Dungeon: floor progress is removed, the run returns to floor one, and the dungeon is redrawn.
  • Hades: the escape attempt ends, but you return to the hub with the story and persistent progression still moving forward.
  • Dead Cells: the current run ends with no checkpoints, while unlocked levels and routes remain part of the longer-term game.

The difference is not simply “hard” versus “easy.” Seolhwa makes the geography and tactical state disposable; Hades makes failure narratively productive; Dead Cells makes the route network increasingly available.

Where variety comes from

  • Seolhwa Dungeon’s variety is systemic. Species, classes, gods, taboos, spell cards, yokai knowledge, folklore choices and a newly drawn dungeon combine to change the rules of an attempt.
  • Hades’s variety is action-plus-story. Repeated attempts are framed by a continuing Underworld narrative, so the reason to start another run is both mechanical practice and the next development in the story.
  • Dead Cells’s variety is route-and-mastery based. Unlockable levels and nonlinear paths change where a run can go, while real-time enemies and bosses demand improved movement and timing.

Which game has the better progression?

Choose Seolhwa Dungeon for the deepest rules-first reset

Seolhwa is the best choice when you want every encounter to be a tactical proposition and you are comfortable losing all floor progress on death. Its 14 species, 12 classes, eight gods with taboos, 32 spell cards and 150-yokai codex give you many combinations to investigate, but the game does not soften the central reset: you begin again on floor one in a new dungeon.

Its four main dungeons and seven branch dungeons also support exploration beyond a single linear climb. The important question is whether you enjoy learning systems and consequences more than collecting permanent power. If you do, Seolhwa offers the most distinctive structure in this comparison.

Choose Hades for progression that keeps the story moving

Hades is the strongest fit when the best reward for another attempt is not only a stronger build but also a continuing character and story arc. The action is faster than Seolhwa’s turn-based play, and the hub gives a failed run a meaningful place in the larger narrative.

It is the natural choice for players who dislike the feeling that death erased their evening. You still lose the current escape attempt, but the game’s central fiction treats repeated attempts as part of the journey rather than as an interruption.

Choose Dead Cells for an expanding map and movement mastery

Dead Cells is the best choice when you want death to teach you through execution and gradually broaden the available route network. Its no-checkpoint structure is severe during a run, yet nonlinear progression means later attempts can reach newly unlocked levels and take different paths.

Pick it over Seolhwa if real-time 2D combat is more appealing than turn-by-turn planning. Pick it over Hades if you want progression to be expressed primarily through destinations, routes and mechanical mastery rather than an ongoing story loop.

A practical decision guide

  1. Decide whether you want turns or continuous action. Select Seolhwa Dungeon for discrete decisions; select Hades or Dead Cells for real-time combat.
  2. Decide what you want death to preserve. Seolhwa preserves your knowledge and future build experimentation but resets the floor; Hades preserves the continuing story and hub progression; Dead Cells preserves unlockable levels and route options.
  3. Choose your preferred source of variety. Seolhwa emphasizes species, classes, gods, taboos, spell cards, folklore events and codex learning. Hades emphasizes action runs connected by narrative progression. Dead Cells emphasizes branching destinations and movement mastery.
  4. Match the setting. Seolhwa uses Korean folklore, yokai and gods; Hades uses Greek mythology; Dead Cells uses a Castlevania-inspired island and castle world.
  5. Consider session format. Seolhwa’s listing describes roughly 40-minute to two-hour runs and supports one-handed portrait, offline single-player play. The other two are built around conventional real-time action sessions rather than portrait mobile play.

Bottom line: different answers to the same roguelike question

Seolhwa Dungeon asks whether you can make the right decision under a strict turn-by-turn ruleset, then asks you to do it again in a newly drawn dungeon after death. Hades asks you to turn failed escape attempts into forward motion through action practice and an ongoing story. Dead Cells asks you to master real-time combat while opening a larger network of levels and routes.

There is no single winner for progression. Seolhwa has the most tactical and system-driven variety, Hades has the clearest story-centered persistence, and Dead Cells has the clearest route-based expansion. The best choice is the one whose form of surviving progress—knowledge, narrative or map access—matches what you want from the next run.
