Series Entertainment really did raise almost $28 million—but the precise evidence matters. The company filed an SEC Form D reporting a $27,999,999 equity offering, all of which had been sold by the filing. The first sale was recorded on August 9, 2024. TechCrunch later reported that the financing was an oversubscribed $28 million Series A backed by Netflix, Dell Technologies Capital and returning investors Andreessen Horowitz, BITKRAFT and F4 Fund.
Series is using the capital to pursue two related businesses: an AI-native game-development platform called Rho Engine and an operating game studio, following its July 2024 acquisition of Pixelberry Studios.

What the funding documents actually show
The strongest public evidence is Series Entertainment Inc.’s SEC Form D filing. It identifies the issuer as a Delaware corporation and reports:
- Offering amount: $27,999,999
- Amount sold: $27,999,999
- Security: equity
- First sale: August 9, 2024
- Investors: six
That filing does not name the investors or call the financing a Series A. The SEC also notes that a Form D is a notice of an exempt offering and does not mean the agency has reviewed or verified the filing’s accuracy and completeness.
#1 Best Overall
The Series A label and investor roster came from TechCrunch’s reporting and company confirmation. The most accurate summary is therefore: Series disclosed a $27,999,999 equity offering in an SEC filing; TechCrunch subsequently reported, with company confirmation, that it was a $28 million Series A.
Who invested in Series?
TechCrunch reported that the round included:
- Netflix
- Dell Technologies Capital
- Andreessen Horowitz, commonly called a16z
- BITKRAFT
- F4 Fund
TechCrunch characterized Netflix and Dell Technologies Capital as investors in the Series A, while a16z, BITKRAFT and F4 Fund followed on from Series’ earlier seed round. The SEC filing reports six investors but does not identify them, so the names should be attributed to the media report rather than presented as information contained in the Form D.
The mix is notable because it combines gaming-focused venture capital with investors that could bring broader technology and entertainment connections. Netflix’s investment is relevant to the company’s interest in interactive entertainment, while Dell Technologies Capital adds enterprise and infrastructure credibility. But the available reporting does not establish a Netflix distribution agreement, exclusive game deal, Rho Engine integration or commitment to use Series’ technology.

In a16z’s announcement, the firm described Series AI as both a game studio and a technology company.
What is Rho Engine?
Series described Rho Engine as an AI-native, multimodal game editor and authoring engine. Rather than positioning generative AI only as a coding assistant or an asset generator, Series’ stated ambition is to put generative systems closer to the center of game production.
Rank #2
The platform was described as supporting the creation of:
- visual and audio game content;
- game assets and environments;
- more interactive non-player characters;
- customized player experiences; and
- new forms of interactive entertainment.
TechCrunch reported that Series wanted to build something that could become “the new Unity.” That is a strategic ambition, not evidence that Rho has Unity’s adoption, ecosystem, platform support or production maturity.

Unity is an established general-purpose game engine. Its traditional role includes rendering, physics, scripting, asset pipelines, editor tooling and deployment. Series is positioning Rho as an AI-native authoring environment that could integrate generative systems into those workflows rather than adding AI as a separate utility.
That distinction separates several categories that are often blurred together:
| Category | Typical purpose | Where Series says it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional game engine | Build, run and deploy games with established tools and pipelines | Rho is aspiring to become a more AI-native version of this broader category |
| AI assistant | Help with coding, brainstorming or workflow questions | More limited than Series’ stated ambition |
| AI asset generator | Create images, 3D models, audio or animation | One possible part of Rho, not the whole platform |
| AI testing tool | Find bugs and test existing builds | Different from Series’ creation-focused positioning |
| AI-native authoring engine | Use generative models throughout game creation and interactive systems | The category Series is targeting |
TechCrunch contrasted Rho with Unity Muse Chat, which it described as more assistant-like, and Modl.ai, whose focus is AI-assisted game testing. Those products address different parts of development. Rho’s larger opportunity—and its larger technical challenge—is to connect generation, editing, game logic and production workflows in one environment.

Series is also a game studio
Series acquired Pixelberry Studios in July 2024. Pixelberry is best known for Choices: Stories You Play, a mobile interactive-fiction title.

The acquisition gives Series something a pure tools startup would not have: an operating studio, an established game portfolio and experience shipping consumer products. Narrative games may also offer a useful setting for experimenting with dialogue, character behavior and branching interactions.
However, the available reporting does not show that Pixelberry’s existing games were built with Rho Engine, nor does it confirm that the acquisition was specifically made to integrate Pixelberry with Rho. The clearer conclusion is that Series is pursuing a dual strategy: build technology for developers while retaining an internal game-production capability.
Why the founder’s background matters
Series CEO Panayoti “Pany” Haritatos has experience across several earlier platform shifts in games. According to a16z and TechCrunch, he founded a browser-game studio during the Flash era, sold it to Zynga, later founded a mobile-game studio that was sold to Kongregate, became Kongregate’s CEO and subsequently led Snap’s games group, including augmented-reality and embedded-game initiatives.
The SEC filing uses the name Panayoti Haritatos, while coverage commonly uses Pany Haritatos. Investors’ thesis is partly that Haritatos has repeatedly operated through major changes in how games are built and distributed. That is investor confidence, not independent proof that generative AI will deliver cheaper or better games.

How big was Series?
TechCrunch reported that Series grew from 17 employees at the beginning of 2024 to more than 100 by September 2024, based on company-provided figures. That is a company-reported headcount, not an independently audited number.
TechCrunch also reported a PitchBook estimate that the financing represented roughly 15% of the company, implying a post-money valuation of about $190 million. Series declined to comment on the estimate’s accuracy, so $190 million should not be described as a disclosed valuation.
What remains unproven about Rho Engine?
The funding confirms investor backing. It does not, by itself, confirm the platform’s commercial maturity. Developers and investors should want answers to practical questions such as:
- Can Rho produce a playable, production-ready build, or mainly prototypes and assets?
- Can developers inspect, edit, version and roll back generated code and systems?
- Does it export to established engines or target particular platforms?
- Can generated characters, environments, animation, dialogue and audio remain consistent across updates?
- What happens when a generated system fails, behaves unpredictably or violates platform rules?
- Are AI models used only during development, or also at runtime for NPCs and personalization?
- If inference runs during gameplay, what are the latency, hosting and per-player costs?
- What training data is used, and who owns generated assets?
- Can studios opt out of model training?
- Does the platform include deployment, testing, analytics, live operations, APIs or continuous-integration support?
The reviewed public material does not answer those questions. Series’ current website describes a generative-AI game-development organization focused on AI development tools and franchise games, but does not publicly provide product pricing, technical documentation, a self-serve signup flow or a public Rho Engine release in the material reviewed.

The opportunity—and the risks
An AI-native engine could reduce the time needed to prototype ideas, create variations and build interactive characters. But faster generation does not automatically mean faster production. Teams still need to direct, review, integrate, test and maintain what the models produce.
The central trade-offs include:
- Speed versus control: generation may accelerate iteration while making exact reproduction and debugging harder.
- Content volume versus distinctiveness: producing more assets does not guarantee original or memorable games.
- Dynamic interaction versus cost: live AI characters may require ongoing model-serving infrastructure.
- Platform ambition versus execution risk: building a general-purpose engine and a game studio is more demanding than building either one alone.
- Strategic investment versus commercial proof: Netflix’s participation signals interest, but does not prove a customer relationship.
- Acquisition versus distraction: Pixelberry provides operating experience, but integrating a studio with a new platform can consume significant management attention.
Where Series fits today
Series is best understood as a venture-backed platform and studio bet, not as a transparent retail software product that an individual developer can immediately download and price-check.
Modl.ai is a more concrete comparison for studios seeking AI-assisted testing and automated QA, but it solves a different problem. Unity remains the established baseline for developers who prioritize a mature engine ecosystem, broad tooling and known production workflows. Series’ proposition is potentially more transformative: make generative systems part of the authoring layer itself.
That proposition will ultimately depend on evidence that is not contained in the financing announcement: public access, shipped games, developer control, reliable builds, clear IP policies and sustainable runtime economics.

Bottom line
Series’ funding was real: its SEC filing reports a fully sold $27,999,999 equity offering, commonly rounded to $28 million. TechCrunch and the company identified it as a Series A involving Netflix, Dell Technologies Capital, a16z, BITKRAFT and F4 Fund.
The more important story is the company’s structure. Series is combining Rho Engine, an AI-native game-development platform, with Pixelberry, an acquired mobile-game studio. That gives it a way to pursue both developer infrastructure and internal game production. But “the new Unity” remains a positioning statement, not an established market fact. The investment is a substantial bet on whether Series can turn generative AI from an asset-production aid into a reliable, production-grade game-development platform.
