setuphk.dll errors usually appear as “setuphk.dll was not found,” “setuphk.dll is missing,” or “Failed to load setuphk.dll.” The file is associated with Sony Install Launcher and older Sony or VAIO utilities, not with Windows itself.
The 60-second answer
Do not download setuphk.dll from a random DLL site, copy it into System32, or register it with regsvr32.
Instead:
- Note which Sony program displays the error.
- Check Windows Security Protection History for quarantine.
- Find the exact Sony or VAIO model support page.
- Reinstall the complete Sony launcher or utility package for that model and Windows version.
- Restart Windows and test the original program again.
Sony’s legacy software commonly includes packages named Sony Utilities DLL, Sony Shared Library, VAIO Event Service, VAIO Launcher Software, Sony Notebook Utilities, and Sony Setting Utilities. The exact package depends on the laptop model and the application that raises the error.
What is setuphk.dll?
setuphk.dll is a third-party application DLL associated in public file metadata with Sony Install Launcher, published by Sony Corporation. Its reported internal description is “Additinal functions DLL,” including that apparent spelling mistake.

That attribution is useful for tracing the error, but it is not supported by a currently accessible Sony file manifest. The exact application that needs the file therefore cannot be identified from the filename alone.
The strongest available metadata describes it as a legacy Win32 component. A 32-bit Sony utility can run normally on 64-bit Windows, so the presence of 64-bit Windows does not mean this DLL belongs in C:WindowsSystem32. It normally belongs beside the Sony installer or utility that uses it.
setuphk.dll is not known to be:
- A standard Windows component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX file
- A .NET Framework file
- A general-purpose system DLL
The error may name setuphk.dll even when the real problem is a dependency used by that DLL. Windows can report “The specified module could not be found” when the named file exists but another required module is missing.
Common reported error messages
The wording varies between Windows versions and Sony programs. You may see:
- “This application failed to start because setuphk.dll was not found.”
- “The file setuphk.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: setuphk.dll.”
- “Failed to load setuphk.dll.”
- “Error loading setuphk.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because setuphk.dll is missing from your computer.”
Record the complete message, including the name of the program or path shown in the window. That information is often more useful than the DLL filename.
Why the file disappeared
The most likely causes are:
- A Sony installation was interrupted or damaged
- A Sony utility was partly uninstalled
- The wrong package was installed for the model
- Antivirus software quarantined the file
- Windows was upgraded and legacy Sony utilities were not reinstalled
- A Sony driver or utility was reinstalled without its companion packages
- Disk cleanup removed an old installation
- An old system image was restored incompletely
- Only part of a Sony installer was extracted or copied
- The DLL exists, but one of its dependencies is missing
- An obsolete Sony startup entry is still trying to launch removed software
The correct repair depends on which Sony application is failing. Repairing an unrelated Sony utility will not necessarily restore the component required by the program showing the error.
Fix 1: Identify the Sony program and model
Start with the application named in the error.
Check the error window
Look for:
- The program name in the title bar
- A Sony or VAIO product name
- The executable path
- Whether the message appears during startup, login, shutdown, or when pressing a function key
- Whether the problem occurs only when launching a particular utility
If the error appears during boot but no program name is shown, inspect startup entries:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for Sony, VAIO, launcher, hotkey, event service, or notebook utility entries.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location, if available.
- Do not delete the entry yet. Note its name and folder.
Confirm the VAIO model
Use the exact model shown on the laptop label, original documentation, BIOS screen, or Windows System Information.

To open System Information:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
msinfo32. - Press Enter.
- Check System Model.
Search the official Sony support site for that exact model. Download only packages listed for the model and the Windows version in use. A package for a similar VAIO can install successfully yet leave the wrong files or incompatible dependencies.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the complete Sony package
This is the most likely solution.
If the Sony program appears in Installed apps
- Press
Windows+I. - Open Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Sony, VAIO, Sony Utilities, Sony Shared Library, VAIO Launcher, or Notebook Utilities.
- Select the relevant entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Try Repair first.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Return to the installed-app list.
- Uninstall the affected Sony package.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the matching package from the exact Sony model support page.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart again.
Do not remove every Sony component immediately. Some packages depend on shared components, and uninstalling them all can make diagnosis harder. If the model’s Sony instructions specify an installation order, follow that order. Sony’s legacy guidance commonly places drivers and shared libraries before utilities such as VAIO Event Service, VAIO Launcher, or Sony Utilities DLL.
If the installer refuses to run
Try these checks:
- Right-click the installer and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, select Unblock if that option appears.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable compatibility mode only if the Sony model documentation or the installer requires it.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply, then run the installer again.
If the installer is on old recovery media, copy the complete installer folder to the local drive before running it. Do not copy only the file named in the error.
How to tell whether this fix worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The original Sony utility opens without the error
- The function key, launcher, or notebook feature works again
- The error no longer appears at sign-in
- The repaired package remains listed in Installed apps
- No new missing-DLL message replaces
setuphk.dll
If the same message remains, verify that you repaired the application named in the error rather than a similarly named Sony package.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus quarantine is especially relevant when the file disappeared immediately after installation or when the Sony installer worked before a security scan.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for
setuphk.dll, the Sony installer, or the affected application.
If Windows Security identifies a file from a trusted, matching Sony installer:
- Open the detection details.
- Confirm the file path and source.
- Use Restore only when you are certain the package came from Sony or your original recovery media.
- Reinstall the complete Sony package afterward if other files may also be missing.
Do not restore a DLL obtained from an unofficial download page. If the source is uncertain, remove the file, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and reinstall the Sony package from trusted media.
Fix 4: Reinstall the related Sony utilities in the required order
On older VAIO systems, the launcher may rely on several packages rather than one standalone file. Relevant Sony package names include:

The model support page determines which of these applies. Do not install all of them blindly.
For a Windows upgrade, the required sequence may place device drivers first, followed by shared libraries and Sony utilities. If Sony provides an order for your model, use it. Restart when instructed, even if an installer does not explicitly request it.
If a package is listed for an older Windows release, that does not prove it will work on every newer release. Use the model-specific instructions and retain the original installer files in case rollback is needed.
Fix 5: Check whether the error is really a missing dependency
If setuphk.dll exists in the Sony program folder but Windows still reports that it cannot load, the named DLL may depend on another missing component.

Do not solve this by copying random DLLs into the same folder. Instead:
- Uninstall the affected Sony application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete official package.
- Test the application before adding unrelated runtime packages.
Install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET only when the error explicitly names that runtime, the Sony documentation requires it, or the installer identifies it as a prerequisite. Those runtimes are not the default fix for setuphk.dll.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall a related driver
A Sony launcher or VAIO hotkey utility can interact with chipset, display, keyboard, or system-device drivers. This is more relevant when the error began after a driver change or Windows upgrade.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as System devices, Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, and Display adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- On the Driver tab, note the provider and date.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Review Driver updates.
- Install only updates that match the affected hardware.
Manually hunting through model-specific driver pages can be slow, especially when several similarly named chipset and hotkey packages are available. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and shows what it identifies; its full-version driver installation is optional, and reinstalling the Sony application remains the definitive fix when the file belongs to that application.
After installing a driver:
- Restart Windows.
- Reopen Device Manager.
- Confirm the warning icon is gone.
- Launch the Sony program again.
Do not use Device Manager’s Uninstall device option unless you have the correct replacement driver or Sony recovery path ready.

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows files and the Windows component store. They do not normally recreate a third-party Sony DLL, so use them as secondary checks.
Run DISM first:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish and test the Sony application.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is relevant when the problem started immediately after installing a driver, removing Sony utilities, or applying another software change.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Review affected programs.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove recently installed applications or drivers. If no suitable restore point exists, reinstall the correct Sony package instead.
What not to do
Do not use random DLL download sites
An isolated download can contain:
- The wrong Sony utility version
- The wrong architecture
- A modified or malicious file
- A file with missing dependencies
- A DLL that does not belong to your model
It can also hide the original problem, such as an incomplete Sony installation or antivirus quarantine. The safe sources are the exact Sony model support page, original Sony recovery media, or a verified backup from the same machine.
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
Windows folder placement is not a universal DLL repair. A 32-bit Sony program on 64-bit Windows may expect its DLL in the Sony application directory, not in either system folder. Let the original installer choose the location.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX components that export DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that setuphk.dll is such a component.
Running:
regsvr32 setuphk.dll
will not install a missing file and may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found. Use registration only if Sony documentation specifically requires it and the supplied DLL is confirmed to export the required function.
If Sony no longer offers the package
Use these options in order:
- Check the original recovery media.
- Check a verified backup from the same laptop.
- Check whether the model support page offers a complete notebook-utilities package under another name.
- Contact the device manufacturer or an authorized support channel.
- If the feature is no longer needed, uninstall the obsolete Sony utility and disable its startup entry.
If the error appears at every boot but you no longer use the Sony launcher, disabling its startup entry may stop the message. Confirm that it is not required for function keys, brightness controls, wireless toggles, or other hardware features before removing it.
