Summer Games Done Quick 2024 raised a reported $2,546,295 during its broadcast for Doctors Without Borders, even as its total hours watched were low compared with other main GDQ events. That contrast is real, but “viewership” needs a precise definition: SGDQ 2024’s peak concurrent audience was slightly higher than in 2023, while total hours watched placed it at the bottom of Streams Charts’ comparison of main events.
How much did SGDQ 2024 raise?
Contemporaneous coverage reported $2,546,295 as the final on-stream fundraising total. Shacknews says the event ran into July 7, 2024, and describes that figure as the amount raised during the event. Shacknews’ event report says the total included direct donations, Twitch subscriptions and Bits, purchases through The Yetee and Fangamer, and the SGDQ 2024 Humble Bundle.
The Games Done Quick donation tracker now displays a distinct total: $2,576,741.39 across 33,888 donations. It also lists a $76.04 average donation and a $25 median. These are the tracker’s displayed statistics, accessed in 2026; they should not be treated as identical to the on-stream figure reported in July 2024, or as a complete breakdown of every channel included in news coverage. What does “declining viewership” mean here?
Audience metrics measure different things. Peak concurrent viewers count the most people watching at one moment; average viewers describe audience size across a broadcast; hours watched add up viewing time across the event. A high peak does not necessarily mean a high total if fewer people watch for the rest of the stream. The cited reports do not provide a comparable average-viewer figure for SGDQ 2024, so the clearest comparison is between peak concurrency and total hours watched.

Peak audience and total viewing time diverged
Streams Charts reports 8.21 million hours watched over 159 broadcast hours, with a peak of 88.6K concurrent viewers. Its analysis says the peak was slightly higher than in 2023, but the hours-watched total was the lowest among the main GDQ events in its comparison, excluding short special events. Streams Charts’ SGDQ 2024 statistics therefore support a narrower claim than “every audience measure declined”: total viewing time was weak by that comparison, while the peak was not lower than in 2023.
The historical comparison is not the same as a year-over-year comparison
GamesBeat described SGDQ 2024 as the least-watched main event since the 2017 edition. It also reported that the average donation size was 28% higher than at SGDQ 2017, while donation counts had declined since 2022. How could fundraising stay high while hours watched were low?
Hours watched and money raised are different totals. Viewership counts audience activity; fundraising can include individual donations as well as subscriptions, Bits, partner purchases, and a bundle, according to Shacknews. A smaller amount of total viewing time can coexist with a large fundraising total if money comes through those channels or donation amounts differ. In this case, the tracker’s average and median donation figures, and GamesBeat’s comparison with 2017, offer context—but they do not isolate why the total remained above $2.5 million.
The available reporting does not quantify how much each channel contributed or demonstrate that one factor explains the outcome. It would be speculation to say that a loyal core audience, larger donations, or partner sales alone offset weaker viewing time. The sound conclusion is that fundraising held up alongside low total hours watched, not that one trend caused the other.

What happened during the event?
SGDQ 2024 was a charity speedrunning marathon benefiting Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières. GamesBeat reported that the event wrapped July 6, while Shacknews describes the seven-day event as running into July 7; the differing dates reflect how the coverage describes the finish. One final donation incentive extended the Super Mario RPG remake run. Shacknews reports that donations could also support the total through Twitch subscriptions and Bits, purchases from The Yetee and Fangamer, and the event’s Humble Bundle.
