A shader-cache reset is worth trying when stuttering, launch crashes, poor performance, or visual artifacts begin after a graphics-driver change or a suspected cache corruption. It is not a universal cure: shader compilation itself commonly causes first-run hitching, and clearing a healthy cache temporarily makes that compilation happen again. Start with the cache belonging to the affected GPU or game, then verify files and patches before changing drivers.
What the shader cache does—and why it can stutter
Games use shaders to describe how the GPU should draw materials, lighting, shadows, effects, and post-processing. A driver or graphics API compiles those shaders into a form the hardware can use. NVIDIA says shader compiles are normally performed each time a game runs and are a common cause of gameplay stuttering. A shader cache stores compiled results so later runs can reuse them instead of compiling the same work again.

Why the first run after a driver update can hitch
Installing a graphics driver can delete or invalidate the existing cache. The next launch therefore behaves like a first launch: shaders are compiled as the game reaches new areas or effects. Hitches during that rebuild do not necessarily mean the new cache is broken. They should generally become less frequent after the affected shaders have been compiled and stored again.
How an undersized cache creates repeated stutter
A cache with too little space can evict shaders that the game still needs. The driver then compiles them again, producing recurring spikes rather than a one-time warm-up. Increasing the cache limit can help in that situation, but there is no universal ideal size. NVIDIA’s support documentation currently shows a 16 GB Driver Default value on its 2026 support page; treat that as the current default for that software version, not a recommendation that applies to every driver, game, or GPU.

When corruption is a plausible diagnosis
NVIDIA states: “If the NVIDIA Shader Cache files are damaged, it may cause applications or games to crash on launch, exhibit lower performance, or display visual artifacts.” A sudden change immediately after a driver installation, an interrupted update, or other cache damage makes a reset reasonable. A random hitch in one busy scene is not proof of cache corruption; CPU limits, asset streaming, a game patch, an API issue, or background work can produce similar symptoms.
Choose the smallest fix that matches the symptom
| Observed pattern | Most useful first scope | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Several games begin crashing or showing artifacts after a driver change | Driver-wide cache reset for the installed GPU vendor | A shared cache can be damaged or mismatched after the driver change. |
| Only one game fails while other games are normal | That game’s files, patch state, API path, or game-managed cache | A single-title failure points more strongly to title-specific data than to a system-wide cache. |
| Stutter appears only on the first run or after entering new areas | Allow shader compilation to finish; check the game’s precompilation option | Compilation is expected work and may stop once the required shaders are stored. |
| Launch crash, lower performance, or visual artifacts began after a driver update | Reset the relevant vendor cache, then rebuild it | Those symptoms match the corruption warning documented by NVIDIA. |
| Steam reports update, launch, or corruption problems | Clear Steam’s download cache and verify installed files | Launcher data and game files can fail independently of the GPU shader cache. |
Before deleting anything
- Record the game name, GPU model, graphics-driver version, API in use (DirectX 11, DirectX 12, or Vulkan), exact crash text, and whether every game or only one title is affected.
- Close the game and its launcher. Do not delete files while they are being written.
- Expect the next launch to stutter while shaders are rebuilt. That temporary behavior is an expected consequence of clearing the cache.
- Keep the game’s own shader-precompilation setting in mind; a reset is easier to evaluate when the game can compile its known shaders before gameplay.
- Do not start with registry edits or broad driver removal. A cache reset is narrower and easier to reverse because the files are regenerated.
Reset an NVIDIA shader cache
The following procedure uses the NVIDIA App controls and the cache locations documented by NVIDIA. It resets driver-wide data, so use it when more than one game is affected or when the failure pattern fits a damaged shared cache.
- Open the NVIDIA App and find the graphics setting labeled Shader Cache Size.
- Set Shader Cache Size to Off, apply the change, and reboot the computer. Turning it off before deletion prevents the driver from immediately recreating files while you are clearing them.
- After the reboot, open File Explorer and enter
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalNVIDIAin the address bar. - Delete the contents of the
DXCachefolder. Delete the contents ofGLCacheas well. Remove the files inside those folders, not the parent NVIDIA directory. - Open
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalNVIDIA CorporationNV_Cacheand delete its contents. - Reopen the NVIDIA App. Return Shader Cache Size to Driver Default, apply it, and reboot a second time.
- Launch the affected game and use the same scene or save that exposed the problem. The first session can hitch while the cache is rebuilt; judge whether later runs improve rather than judging the first minutes alone.
What the NVIDIA reset changes
This process removes compiled shader data, not the game installation or personal saves. The driver recreates the cache as games run. If the crash happens before any meaningful rendering begins, continue to the file-verification and patch checks below instead of repeatedly deleting a cache that never gets a chance to rebuild.

NVIDIA’s DDU route
NVIDIA also documents a DDU option labeled Clean Shader Cache (Only). That is a targeted alternative when you prefer a guided cleanup. Use the shader-cache-only action rather than escalating to a full driver removal for an ordinary cache symptom. Full driver removal is a different, higher-impact operation and is not a first-line cache fix.
Reset behavior on AMD hardware
AMD describes Shader Cache as storing frequently used shaders to provide faster loading and reduced CPU use by compiling and storing them rather than regenerating them whenever they are needed. AMD software enables its optimized shader-cache behavior by default, and the feature can be disabled globally.
- Open the current Radeon software control panel installed with your driver.
- Use its graphics settings to locate the Shader Cache control and note whether it is set to the AMD-optimized default or disabled globally.
- Follow the reset or clear action exposed by that Radeon version and by the game’s documentation. AMD’s controls and cache handling are not the same as NVIDIA’s.
- Restart the game, allow a rebuild, and test the previously affected scene after the first-run compilation has completed.
Do not copy the NVIDIA paths into an AMD installation. A folder that exists on one vendor’s driver may be irrelevant on another system, and deleting unrelated files can make diagnosis harder.

DirectX 12: why there is no single universal cache folder
The DirectX 12 specification defines controls to enable, disable, and clear shader caches. It also distinguishes application-managed caches from working-directory caches. That distinction matters: a game may own the cache, place it beside its executable or in a title-specific data directory, and rebuild it through its own code. Deleting a random DirectX-looking folder can therefore miss the data that is actually causing the failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the game or API control first
- Check the game’s graphics or troubleshooting menu for a Clear Shader Cache, Rebuild Shaders, or shader-precompilation option.
- If the title documents a working-directory cache, close the game and remove only the files that documentation identifies.
- If the title uses an application-managed cache, let the game clear it rather than forcing a driver-wide deletion.
- After clearing, allow the complete rebuild before deciding whether the reset worked.
DirectX 12 cache controls do not make every stutter a DirectX problem. They only provide a way for the application and API to manage compiled shader data; the game, driver, and hardware still determine when compilation occurs.
Repair the game and Steam data
If only one Steam game is affected, repair its installation before performing repeated system-wide resets. Steam documents two relevant operations: clearing the client’s download cache and verifying installed files.

Clear Steam’s download cache
- Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache and confirm. Steam may restart and require you to sign in again.
- Launch the game after Steam has finished reconnecting. This clears client download data; it does not replace the GPU vendor’s shader cache.
Verify the installed files
- Open your Steam Library, right-click the affected game, and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to complete the check and reacquire files when necessary.
- Apply the game’s current patch, then test again before changing additional graphics settings.
Verification can repair missing or corrupted game assets, but it does not guarantee that a damaged driver cache will be fixed. Conversely, a clean shader cache cannot repair a missing executable, a failed update, or corrupted game data.
Rebuild and test without misreading the result
- Start the game after the selected cache reset or repair and stay in a repeatable area, benchmark, or save.
- Expect compilation hitches during the first pass. Record whether they diminish after revisiting the same locations.
- Keep the graphics API unchanged for the first comparison. Switching from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11 or Vulkan at the same time as clearing the cache changes two variables.
- If the game offers shader precompilation, run it to completion before entering gameplay.
- Only after the rebuild has completed should you compare launch reliability, frame pacing, artifacts, and performance with the pre-reset behavior.
If clearing the cache does not help
Move from the least disruptive, title-specific checks to broader troubleshooting. Each step answers a different failure mode.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Confirm the game is patched
Install the game’s current update. A shader compiled for an older executable or asset set may be invalidated by a patch, while an unpatched game may contain a known crash that no cache reset can remove.

2. Run the game’s own shader-precompilation process
When available, precompilation moves shader work out of active gameplay. It does not eliminate all runtime compilation, but it can distinguish expected first-use stutter from a cache that repeatedly fails to retain results.
3. Test reversible graphics changes
- Lower shader detail temporarily and retest the same scene.
- Use windowed mode when troubleshooting an integrated-graphics system; Steam recommends this test for some such configurations.
- Change one setting at a time and restore it if there is no effect.
These settings are diagnostic and reversible. They do not prove that the cache was faulty; they show whether a particular rendering path or resource demand is involved.
4. Compare APIs only as a controlled test
If the game supports more than one API, test another supported option after recording the original. A crash limited to one API path points toward that game’s implementation, driver interaction, or API-specific cache rather than automatically implicating every shader cache on the system.
5. Escalate with useful evidence
When vendor or game support is necessary, provide the game name, GPU, driver version, API, exact crash text, time the symptoms began, whether other games fail, which cache was cleared, and the cache path involved. Include whether the first post-reset launch stuttered and whether later launches changed. This separates a normal rebuild from a persistent fault.
Common mistakes that prolong the problem
- Deleting a cache and judging the first launch: the first launch is the least representative because compilation is happening again.
- Using a vendor’s folder instructions on another vendor: NVIDIA paths are not AMD instructions.
- Resetting a driver-wide cache for a single-game file problem: verify the title and its patch first when every other game works.
- Assuming every hitch proves corruption: normal shader compilation, streaming, CPU limits, and API behavior can all stutter.
- Changing several variables at once: a driver update, API switch, cache deletion, and graphics preset change cannot reveal which action mattered.
- Escalating immediately to registry edits or full driver removal: those operations carry more risk than deleting regenerable cache files and are not first-line steps in the documented guidance.
A practical decision path
| Question | Next action |
|---|---|
| Did the problem begin after a driver change, and do several games show it? | Use the GPU vendor’s cache reset procedure, then allow a complete rebuild. |
| Does only one game fail? | Verify Steam files, install the current patch, and use the game’s cache or precompilation controls. |
| Does the first run stutter but later runs improve? | Treat it as compilation warm-up unless other symptoms persist. |
| Are there launch crashes, artifacts, or lower performance after the reset? | Record the API and crash text, test the game’s supported API or reversible settings, and seek title or vendor support. |
| Is the system using AMD, DirectX 12 application-managed data, or an integrated GPU? | Follow the controls and paths exposed by that software or game; do not apply NVIDIA-only folder steps. |
What a successful fix looks like
A successful reset does not necessarily make the first launch smooth. The meaningful result is that the game can rebuild shaders, subsequent visits produce fewer repeated hitches, and the launch crash, artifact, or performance regression disappears. If the same failure returns after a clean rebuild and verified game files, the cache was probably only one part of the problem—or not the cause at all. At that point, the recorded GPU, driver, API, crash text, and cache details give support teams enough context to investigate the remaining path.
