Possibly, but there is no verified universal millisecond penalty. ShadowPlay can reduce performance on a particular PC, and lower or less-consistent frame rates can make controls feel less responsive. NVIDIA Support says the performance difference is typically about 5% and can reach 10% in the most demanding cases, but that is a performance estimate—not a measurement of added input lag. The only dependable answer for your system is a controlled comparison with capture off and on while measuring latency, frame rate and frame-time consistency.
What “input lag” means in this question
Input lag is end-to-end delay between an input event and the resulting image appearing on the display. NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.4 guide calls this PC latency: the interval from when the operating system processes a mouse click until the completed frame is sent to the display. That interval includes more than the recording feature. Operating-system handling, game processing and rendering all contribute to the pipeline.

ShadowPlay may influence that pipeline indirectly if recording changes the workload enough to reduce frame rate or disturb frame pacing. However, a change in frames per second does not tell you how many milliseconds of input latency changed. A game can lose a few frames per second while preserving nearly the same latency, or maintain its average FPS while developing inconsistent frame times that feel worse. Latency, FPS and stutter are related observations, not interchangeable measurements.

| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA Support estimate (updated August 6, 2025) | “In most games, you shouldn’t see a noticeable performance difference with ShadowPlay, 5% is typical, 10% in the most demanding cases.” | A 5% or 10% increase in input latency, or any fixed number of milliseconds |
| NVIDIA FrameView 1.4 guide | PC latency can be reported alongside average FPS, low-percentile FPS and stutter-related frame-time measures | That ShadowPlay adds a particular latency value on every PC |
| GamersNexus test on a GTX 780 Ti system | 98.21% delivered-frame throughput in that test configuration | A current, ShadowPlay-specific end-to-end latency result for your hardware |
| PCWorld testing on a low-end gaming rig | Frame-rate declines were observed in that configuration | A universal result, or an isolated measurement of added input lag |
The official 5% and 10% figures describe performance difference, not responsiveness. The independent results are useful examples of configuration dependence, but they are older frame-rate observations and do not isolate the latency contribution of a current ShadowPlay implementation. No cited source provides a controlled, modern before-and-after ShadowPlay input-latency result in milliseconds.

Why a performance hit can feel like input lag
Lower frame rate changes how often the game presents updates
At a lower frame rate, the display receives completed frames less frequently. Depending on the game’s input, simulation and rendering behavior, that can make movement or aiming feel less immediate. It is a change in the presentation cadence, not proof that ShadowPlay inserted a fixed delay into every click.
Frame-time consistency matters as much as the average
Average FPS can hide uneven delivery. A stable 120 FPS and a session that averages 120 FPS while repeatedly pausing for longer frames will not feel identical. FrameView’s low-percentile FPS and stutter-oriented measurements help expose those departures from the average. If your controls feel intermittently sluggish, frame-time consistency may explain the symptom even when the headline FPS number looks acceptable.
Other parts of the pipeline can be responsible
NVIDIA’s latency guidance treats PC latency as a combination of operating-system, game and rendering stages. A driver state, a graphics setting, a display mode or a busy background process can therefore coincide with the symptom. Turning ShadowPlay off may appear to fix the problem simply because it changes the workload, while the underlying bottleneck is elsewhere. Measure the complete path before assigning the cause to capture.
How to test ShadowPlay on your own PC
A controlled on/off comparison is more informative than switching recording off during an unrelated match and judging the sensation from memory. Keep the workload and every relevant setting stable.

- Choose a repeatable test scene. Use the same game area, replay, benchmark or training situation for both runs. Select one display mode, resolution, graphics preset and frame-rate limit.
- Establish a capture-off baseline. Exit or disable ShadowPlay features, then play or run the scene long enough to collect a representative sample rather than a single moment. Note average FPS, low-percentile FPS and frame-time behavior.
- Measure PC latency when supported. FrameView reports PC latency together with performance and stutter metrics. Record the latency value using the same procedure and measurement conditions in both runs.
- Enable the exact feature you normally use. If you use Instant Replay, test Instant Replay; if you use manual recording or desktop capture, test that mode. Do not substitute one feature for another and assume they have identical behavior.
- Keep recording settings fixed. Use the same recording quality and replay settings throughout the comparison. Changing resolution, quality or replay length between runs makes the result impossible to attribute cleanly.
- Repeat the capture-on run. Run the same scene multiple times and compare the distributions, not just the best or worst pass. Repetition reduces the chance that a one-off background task or an inconsistent scene determines the verdict.
- Change only one variable in a follow-up test. If capture-on results are worse, repeat with the same game settings and alter one capture condition at a time. Keep other background applications unchanged during each comparison.
Write down the conditions with the numbers: game and scene, resolution, display mode, graphics settings, frame-rate cap, capture feature, recording quality, average FPS, low-percentile FPS, frame-time consistency and PC latency. This record prevents a later settings change from being mistaken for a ShadowPlay effect.
How to interpret the result
Latency and frame pacing are unchanged
If repeated runs show equivalent PC latency, comparable low-percentile FPS and consistent frame times, your configuration has not demonstrated a meaningful responsiveness change. The fact that recording is active is not, by itself, evidence of added lag.
FPS falls but measured latency does not
This indicates a performance cost without a demonstrated end-to-end latency increase under the tested conditions. You may still prefer the capture-off state if the lower frame rate is visually or subjectively unpleasant, but do not convert the FPS percentage into milliseconds.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
PC latency rises only when capture is active
A repeatable rise under identical conditions is evidence that capture affects your particular setup. The size and cause are configuration-specific; the NVIDIA 5% and 10% performance guidance cannot be used to calculate the latency increase. Preserve your measurements and test one capture setting at a time if you want to find a less costly configuration.

Only some games or scenes show a change
That pattern is consistent with NVIDIA’s qualification that the impact depends on how demanding the game is. A demanding scene may have less spare performance than a light one, so test the title and mode in which responsiveness matters rather than extrapolating from another game.
The numbers do not change, but the game feels different
Check whether capture actually remained active, whether the scene was identical and whether display or frame-rate settings changed. Subjective impressions are useful for identifying a problem, but they cannot distinguish a latency change from a visual frame-pacing change without measurements.

Instant Replay maintains a rolling recording so that you can save a recent moment. A failure to save a clip, a replay that stops or desktop capture that will not start is a capture-availability problem, not evidence that ShadowPlay added latency.

NVIDIA also notes that some NVIDIA App features may not work correctly with older, unsupported drivers. If the behavior appears after a driver change or only on an unsupported version, resolve the driver-support issue before drawing conclusions about input lag. A feature that is not running cannot be responsible for the measured effect of an active recording session.
How to make a fair comparison when troubleshooting
- Use the same display path. Keep monitor, refresh rate, display mode and synchronization settings unchanged between runs.
- Hold the game workload constant. A busy multiplayer fight, a quiet menu and a benchmark section are not equivalent tests.
- Do not alter background activity mid-test. The comparison should not pair a quiet desktop with one run and a software update, browser workload or other task with the other.
- Test the feature you actually use. Instant Replay, manual recording and desktop capture should be evaluated as separate conditions when they are used differently.
- Prefer repeated measurements to a single impression. One inconsistent run cannot establish a stable latency penalty.
- Separate availability from performance. Copy-protection blocks, unsupported drivers and failed recordings answer whether capture works, not how much input delay an active capture session causes.
Comparing another recording method without guessing
If you are considering a different way to save gameplay, the same test design applies. The available evidence does not establish a universally best alternative or show that another product eliminates latency. Compare methods using measurable criteria rather than a blanket claim that one is “lag-free.”
| Comparison axis | What to measure or verify |
|---|---|
| Responsiveness | PC latency under the same game scene with capture off and on |
| Performance stability | Average FPS, low-percentile FPS and frame-time consistency |
| Video output | Recording quality and supported resolution for the mode you use |
| System workload | How the encoder or capture path changes the tested game configuration |
| Workflow | How quickly clips can be saved and whether the feature works in the game and display mode |
Run the same scene, settings and repetitions for each method. That produces a result about your PC and your game, which is more useful than transferring an old frame-rate result from unrelated hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe practical answer
ShadowPlay can carry a performance cost, and that cost may make a game feel less responsive on some systems. NVIDIA’s current estimate is about 5% in typical games and up to 10% in the most demanding cases, but those percentages are not input-latency measurements. Because no cited source establishes a universal ShadowPlay delay in milliseconds, determine the effect by comparing capture off and on with identical conditions and by measuring PC latency alongside FPS and frame-time consistency.
