Shadowveil: Legend of the Five Rings is a single-player PC roguelite strategy game in which you plan a samurai party and its tactics, then watch battles resolve automatically. Its challenge comes from learning how routes, abilities, equipment and positioning fit together—not from issuing commands in real time.
What kind of game is Shadowveil?
Developed by Palindrome Interactive, Shadowveil is set in Rokugan and the Shadowlands, the fantasy setting of Legend of the Five Rings. Steam categorizes it as a strategy, RPG, adventure and roguelite game. It released on Steam on March 4, 2025. Steam’s store listing is the verified digital availability page.
It is a single-player experience, not a real-time multiplayer battler. The central rhythm is to make a series of choices before a fight, commit your party to that plan, and see how it performs.
How does the auto-battler combat work?
Combat is automatic once it starts, but preparation is not passive. Before a battle, you choose which samurai to deploy, configure their abilities and items, and decide where to position them. The fighters then execute the plan without real-time micromanagement. Success depends on the decisions you made beforehand rather than quick reactions during the fight.

- Command your party: You are the commander. Your role is to focus on the big picture, make the big decisions, and let your forces handle the execution of them. Make impactful decisions on how to guide the expedition's journey through the Shadowlands, who to bring, what cards to equip, what new paths to unlock and build your strategy to achieve your long-term goals.
- Equip powerful abilities: Gather and equip both ability and item cards to your samurai, making them even stronger as you progress. Building powerful synergies/combinations between your party members will be crucial in determining the outcome of each battle.
- Recruit and improve your party: Recruit new samurai, unlock new classes, level up and improve along different paths to grow your party stronger for each run. As your party grows in ability and size, you will be better equipped to face the dangers that lie deeper in the Shadowlands.
- Choose your path: Deploy your scouts wisely to reveal the secrets of each path and determine the best route through the treacherous Shadowlands. Each path presents unique opportunities and challenges, offering greater rewards or more formidable adversaries. As you delve deeper, the surroundings become increasingly twisted, corrupt, and intricate.
- Bask in victory: See your glorious planning pay off as your samurai execute your strategies in battle, without the need for real-time micromanagement. Positioning, who you send into battle, and what abilities and items you equip will shape your party's ability to be victorious against the many enemies you face along your journey.
Between battles, you send scouts along paths through the Shadowlands. Routes present different risks and rewards, so choosing where to go is part of managing a run: an attractive opportunity may lead to a more difficult encounter. You also train your samurai and adjust your party as the expedition continues. The official Legend of the Five Rings announcement likewise describes the game as a journey through the Shadowlands in which players assemble a team of samurai.
What changes from one run to another?
The Steam description points to cards dealt each run, route choices with different risk-and-reward profiles, and progression that continues after defeat. Together, these make each attempt a fresh combination of available options and decisions, while longer-term development gives repeated attempts a purpose. That is roguelite variation, not a promise that every run will be radically different.

- ENTER THE VIBRANT WORLD OF ROKUGAN: The Emerald Empire of Rokugan. It is a land upheld by honor, guided by fate, ruled by destiny. In the midst of danger and turmoil, honor must be your sword and your armor.

Ultimately, it’s your choice whether you will fight with honor or use unsavory means, but in every game, it is your role to lead your clan to victory.
- CORE SET: This set comes with everything a player needs to explore the seven great clans of Rokugan, the Crab Clan, Crane Clan, Dragon Clan, Lion Clan, Phoenix Clan, Scorpion Clan, and Unicorn Clan. - NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: This immersive strategy card game for adults and teens is made for 2 players and is suitable for ages 14 and older. Average playtime is approximately 45 to 90 minutes.
A failed expedition can still contribute to later attempts: defeats can open new skill-tree choices and provide stronger cards. The practical loop is to learn from a failed plan, develop your options, and try a different route or party setup next time.
Is Shadowveil hard?
It can be demanding, particularly while you are still figuring out how its systems interact. In a March 2025 launch review, Ars Technica’s Kevin Purdy described a steep learning curve, trial and error, frequent numerical disadvantages, and combat outcomes that could feel chaotic. He also noted that upgrading characters at camp and eventually winning after repeated failures could be satisfying. Those are one reviewer’s impressions after roughly seven hours of play, not a guarantee that every player will find the same difficulty or readability issues. Read the Ars Technica review.

The distinction between planning and execution matters when judging the difficulty: the game does not ask you to steer every fighter in the middle of a battle, but you do need to understand what your lineup and setup can handle. If you prefer to adapt continuously through real-time commands, this structure may feel restrictive; if you enjoy diagnosing a plan after it succeeds or fails, the automatic resolution makes the consequences easier to assess.

Is Shadowveil a good fit for you?
Consider Shadowveil if you want to build a party and think through tactics before combat, rather than control units continuously once a fight begins. Its route decisions, party composition and run-to-run card options give you several levers to experiment with; the reviewer’s account suggests that learning those systems may involve setbacks.
The Steam listing currently notes 84 achievements, a count that can change if the store page is updated. It also offers a soundtrack as digital content; the listing does not establish a physical soundtrack. The wider Legend of the Five Rings franchise includes tabletop roleplaying games, board games, novels and art books, but none is presented as a prerequisite for playing Shadowveil.
