To install it reliably, choose one Minecraft and NeoForge version, use the matching client pack and dedicated server pack, and make every player run the identical release. For the main release line currently shown by the project, that means Minecraft 1.21.1 and the server archive SharedLife (Server Pack) – MC 1.21.1 – 6.1.0.

What SharedLife changes on a multiplayer server
SharedLife is a vanilla+ Minecraft modpack by EnderWarrior. Its defining rule is shared health: the players in a group are linked, so damage suffered by one player affects everyone. A player death can therefore take down the whole group rather than removing only the person who made the mistake. EnderWarrior describes it as “a vanilla+ Minecraft modpack that completely changes how you play with friends by linking everyone’s health together.”

A cave entrance, a Nether trip, a fight with a boss, or a risky jump is no longer an individual choice. The team has to decide who goes first, what supplies are available, and whether the possible reward is worth exposing every player to the same danger.
The project page lists 31.1K total downloads according to CurseForge’s 2026 listing. It lists NeoForge builds across several Minecraft lines. Minecraft 1.21.1 is shown as the main release line, while newer 26.1.x files also appear in the project’s file list. Those lines are not interchangeable: a 1.21.1 client cannot safely join a server built from a different SharedLife server-pack line.

Choose a version before installing anything
Version consistency is the most important installation decision. Select a Minecraft version, the corresponding SharedLife release, and the NeoForge loader expected by that release before you create a world or invite players.
| Decision | What the available project information establishes | Practical rule |
|---|---|---|
| Main line | Minecraft 1.21.1 is presented as the principal release line. | Use 1.21.1 when you want the clearest alignment between the client pack and the current dedicated server pack. |
| Dedicated server archive | SharedLife (Server Pack) – MC 1.21.1 – 6.1.0, a NeoForge archive uploaded August 29, 2026. | Use this exact 1.21.1 server-pack release with clients running the matching SharedLife version. |
| Other files | Newer 26.1.x files are listed alongside 1.21.1 files. | Do not mix a 26.1.x client or server with a 1.21.1 installation. Treat each line as a separate deployment. |
| Loader | The project is published for NeoForge. | Install the NeoForge loader required by the selected pack; do not substitute Fabric, Forge, or an unrelated NeoForge build. |
If your launcher shows several files, write down the complete Minecraft version, SharedLife version, and NeoForge version you selected. Give that information to every player and keep it with the server backup. “Almost the same version” is not a compatibility strategy for modded servers.

- A Minecraft account and launcher that can install the selected modpack and NeoForge profile.
- The SharedLife client pack installed for every player, using the same release.
- The matching SharedLife server-pack archive for a dedicated server. For the main 1.21.1 line, use release 6.1.0.
- A machine or hosting plan capable of running a NeoForge server and storing the world, logs, and backups. The available project information does not publish a tested RAM minimum, maximum player count, or performance benchmark, so those figures should not be treated as established requirements.
- A way for players to reach the server, such as a private network or a managed host, plus permission to open or forward the required game port if you self-host.
- A backup location separate from the live world directory.
Install the client pack first on one test account. Launch it far enough to confirm that the selected Minecraft and NeoForge versions appear together, then close it before preparing the server. This catches a launcher mismatch before you have a world to protect.
How to install SharedLife on a dedicated server
1. Select and record the release
- Open the official SharedLife project listing and choose one Minecraft line. For the current main line, select Minecraft 1.21.1.
- Note the SharedLife file version and the NeoForge loader version shown for that line. Keep the notes with your server credentials and backup schedule.
- Tell every player which exact release to install. Do not let players choose “latest” independently when the server has already been created.
2. Install the matching client pack
- Use a supported launcher or the official project listing to install the SharedLife client pack.
- Open the launcher’s instance or profile details and verify the Minecraft version, SharedLife version, and NeoForge loader.
- Repeat the same check for each player. A successful launch to the title screen proves only that the local profile works; it does not prove that it matches the server.
3. Download and unpack the server pack
- Download the file explicitly labeled Server Pack for the same Minecraft line. For Minecraft 1.21.1, the current listed archive is SharedLife (Server Pack) – MC 1.21.1 – 6.1.0.
- Unpack the archive into a new, dedicated server directory. Do not extract it over an unrelated modpack or an existing world until you have a backup.
- Read the archive’s included startup instructions and use its supplied server launcher or script. Avoid copying mods from another Minecraft version into this directory.
- Accept the Minecraft server agreement when the first launch creates the agreement file, then start the server again using the pack’s documented startup method.
The server pack matters because a client download is not automatically a complete dedicated-server installation. The server archive is the project’s packaged set of server-side files for that release. Keep the archive itself so you can restore the installation if an update or configuration change goes wrong.

4. Start a disposable test world
- Start the server without inviting the full group.
- Join with one client running the exact matching pack. Confirm that the server reaches its normal ready state and that the client does not report missing mods, an incompatible loader, or a different game version.
- Have a second player join. Test movement, damage, food, healing, and death behavior in a temporary world. This is the safest time to discover that the group’s health rules differ from your expectations.
- Stop the server cleanly and keep the test logs if an error appears. The first lines naming a missing mod, wrong version, or loader mismatch are generally more useful than the final disconnect message.
5. Create the real world and lock the version
Once the two-player test succeeds, create the production world and record the pack version in the server’s notes or welcome message. Do not update the server in the middle of a session simply because a newer file appears in the launcher. Schedule updates between sessions, with a backup and a client-update window for every player.
How players should connect
Every player must launch the same SharedLife instance before selecting the multiplayer server. If one player receives a mod-list or network-channel error while others connect, compare the complete profile details rather than reinstalling at random.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Compare Minecraft version first.
- Compare SharedLife pack version second.
- Compare NeoForge loader version third.
- Confirm that the player is launching the SharedLife profile, not an ordinary vanilla profile with a similar name.
- Make sure the server was restarted after a server-pack change.
Do not begin an important world until every regular player has completed a test connection. SharedLife’s shared-death rule makes a broken or mismatched client especially disruptive: one player may be unable to rejoin while the rest of the team is already committed to a world.
Playing safely when everyone shares health
SharedLife rewards communication more than individual speed. Treat the team’s health pool as a shared resource and make risk visible before anyone takes it.

Assign a lead and a callout habit
Agree on who leads exploration and who watches the rear. Before entering a cave, ravine, Nether route, or hostile structure, say what you can see and whether the group is ready. A short callout such as “lava below,” “low food,” or “retreat” gives everyone a chance to stop moving before the hazard becomes shared damage.
Carry recovery supplies as a group
Keep food and healing resources available before starting combat or a long expedition. Do not treat one player’s full hunger bar as proof that the team is prepared; another player may be the first to take damage, and that damage affects everyone. Store a reserve at a known location so a failed trip does not remove the group’s ability to recover.
Do not split for convenience
Solo mining, scouting, or fighting may be efficient in ordinary multiplayer Minecraft, but SharedLife turns a distant mistake into a party-wide problem. If someone must split off, agree on the destination, the return point, and the conditions that trigger a retreat. Avoid sending a poorly equipped player into an area that the rest of the group cannot reach quickly.
Plan around shared death
Because one player’s death can take down the whole group, recovery planning is part of normal play. Keep valuable items organized, establish where replacement equipment is stored, and decide who will restart the expedition after a wipe. A team that discusses failure before a boss fight loses less time and fewer resources when the outcome is bad.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
A self-hosted server gives you direct control over files, backups, world saves, and update timing. Managed hosting trades some of that hands-on control for a dashboard, provider maintenance, and support. The right choice depends less on the modpack’s name than on who will be responsible when the server stops, the pack updates, or a player cannot connect.

| Consideration | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Version and loader support | You install and verify NeoForge, the SharedLife server pack, and every update yourself. | The provider must confirm that it supports the Minecraft and NeoForge line you selected. |
| Setup effort | Requires a server machine, networking, permissions, startup configuration, and your own troubleshooting. | Usually offers an installation workflow; the amount of automation varies by provider. |
| Updates | You control when to stop the server, back up the world, replace files, and coordinate client updates. | The provider may offer one-click or assisted updates, but you still need to confirm pack compatibility and make backups. |
| Backups | You choose the schedule, retention, and off-machine destination. | Backup tools may be included, but retention, restore access, and extra charges must be checked in the current plan. |
| Support | Your group diagnoses logs, networking, and mod conflicts. | Support responsiveness and modpack expertise depend on the provider and plan. |
| Player slots and performance | Bound by your hardware and network; no authoritative SharedLife maximum is established here. | Bound by the selected plan and provider policy; verify slots and resources for your exact version. |
| Latency | Depends on the host machine’s location and your upload connection. | Choose a data-center region close to most players and confirm the available locations. |
| Monthly cost | May use an existing computer but carries electricity, bandwidth, and maintenance costs. | A recurring fee buys convenience; compare the full monthly price, renewal price, and backup or support charges. |
The project page recommends BisectHosting and mentions 24/7 support and a first-month discount code. Referral eligibility and the terms of that offer can change, so verify the current details before ordering. VeryGames also advertises a dedicated SharedLife hosting option with installation, updates, management, and support; confirm its current pricing, supported versions, and included resources before committing.
Neither the project information nor the hosting references establish a tested RAM baseline, a maximum player count, or a performance benchmark. Do not select a plan solely because it claims a particular number of players. Ask the host which NeoForge and SharedLife releases it supports, how restores work, and whether you can download your world and configuration files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Updating without breaking the world
- Announce a maintenance window and stop players from joining.
- Stop the server cleanly and make a dated copy of the complete world and server directory.
- Choose the target SharedLife, Minecraft, and NeoForge versions as a set. Never update only one component because it has a newer number.
- Read the target server-pack notes and install the matching server archive in a separate directory when possible.
- Start the updated server with a copy of the world first. Check the log for loader or mod errors and join with one updated client.
- Have the rest of the group update their client profiles before reopening the production world.
- Keep the pre-update backup until everyone has connected and the world has been tested.
If a new file belongs to the 26.1.x line while your world runs 1.21.1, treat that as a planned migration rather than a routine patch. The project lists both lines, but the available information does not establish that a world can move between them safely.

Troubleshooting common connection and startup failures
The server stops during startup
Confirm that you unpacked the server-pack archive rather than the client profile, that the Java and Minecraft requirements shown by the selected release are met, and that the startup method came from the archive. Remove unrelated mods and configuration files copied from another pack. If the log names a specific missing dependency or incompatible loader, fix that named mismatch before trying another change.
Players receive an incompatible mod list or channel error
Compare the three identifiers—Minecraft, SharedLife, and NeoForge—between the server and the affected client. Reinstalling the same client profile will not help if the server is running a different release. Restart the server after replacing its pack files, and ensure the player is not launching a similarly named vanilla instance.
Only one player can connect
Test the connection from the server’s local network and from the internet separately. If local players connect but remote players cannot, investigate the host machine’s firewall, router forwarding, or managed-host access rules. If nobody can connect, check that the server completed startup and is listening on the configured address before changing client files.
The world behaves unexpectedly after an update
Stop immediately, preserve the current world directory, and restore the pre-update backup in a separate test location. Verify that the client and server use the same release and that the update was intended for the world’s Minecraft line. Do not repeatedly launch the only copy of the world while diagnosing a version problem.
A practical launch checklist
- One Minecraft version selected for the entire group.
- One SharedLife release selected for that Minecraft version.
- NeoForge loader aligned on every client and on the server.
- Matching client pack installed for every player.
- Matching server-pack archive installed on the dedicated server.
- Two-player test completed before the production world is created.
- Food, healing supplies, retreat signals, and shared-death expectations agreed in chat or voice.
- Dated world backup created before every update.
- Hosting plan checked for current version support, location, slots, backups, support, and total recurring cost.
Bottom line for a SharedLife server
For the least ambiguous setup, build around Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge, install the matching client pack for every player, and deploy the explicitly labeled 1.21.1 server pack, version 6.1.0. Test two clients before starting the real world, then manage every expedition as a group because damage and death are shared. Self-hosting is appropriate when you want complete file and backup control; managed hosting is worthwhile when installation, updates, uptime, or support would otherwise fall on one player. In either case, verify the exact version and resource terms instead of relying on a generic “Minecraft server” claim.
