Sharpshooter and Firearms in D&D 5e: Which Edition Rules Apply?

Yes— in Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Sharpshooter can work with guns when the firearm is classified as a ranged weapon. A firearm attack is then a ranged weapon attack, which is the category the feat addresses. The important qualification is edition: the 2014 and 2024 versions of Sharpshooter are separate entries with different benefits. Use the feat text that matches the rules your table has adopted, then check the specific firearm’s properties and any Dungeon Master ruling.

What “works with guns” means in D&D 5e

The question is about the type of attack, not whether a weapon looks like a bow or crossbow. In the Sage Advice Compendium, the official explanation is: “It means a melee attack with a weapon. Similarly, ‘ranged weapon attack’ means a ranged attack with a weapon.” That definition puts the focus on two facts: you are making an attack, and the attack is made with a weapon.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

D&D firearm rules classify firearms as ranged weapons. Consequently, firing a pistol, musket, or another firearm from a rules entry that uses that classification normally produces a ranged weapon attack. A Sharpshooter benefit written for ranged weapon attacks can therefore apply to that shot.

This conclusion is specific to D&D 5e. A different game may use “Sharpshooter” for an ability with entirely different wording, and a homebrew firearm may be tagged as a weapon, a special item, or something else. If the title of the feat or gun does not come from D&D 5e, read that game’s own rules instead of importing this ruling.

First identify the rules version

D&D Beyond lists a 2014 Sharpshooter entry and a current 2024 entry. They are not interchangeable. The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide update explains that, when a table uses the 2024 rules, those rules replace the corresponding 2014 guidance. A character created with one rules version should not automatically receive a benefit from the other version simply because both feats have the same name.

Question 2014 rules 2024 rules
Which feat text controls? The 2014 Player’s Handbook wording, unless the table has adopted a replacement or house rule. The current 2024 feat wording used by the table, with its own prerequisites and benefits.
Does a firearm qualify? Yes, when the firearm is treated as a ranged weapon and the attack is made with that weapon. The same weapon-category test applies: a firearm must be a ranged weapon under the rules being used.
Long-range benefit The feat removes the normal disadvantage for making a ranged weapon attack beyond normal range, subject to the weapon’s stated maximum range. The 2024 discussion describes a long-range benefit for attacks with ranged weapons; use the exact current text at your table.
Cover benefit Ranged attacks ignore half cover and three-quarters cover when the feat’s conditions are met. The 2024 discussion identifies a cover benefit for attacks with ranged weapons; check the current book for the precise wording.
Other benefits Includes the well-known option to take a penalty to an attack roll for extra damage when making a qualifying attack with a proficient ranged weapon. The benefits differ from 2014. Do not add the 2014 attack-penalty damage option unless the 2024 text your table uses actually grants it.

The table shows why an answer that merely says “Sharpshooter works with guns” is incomplete. The firearm classification answers the weapon-type question, but the edition determines which individual benefits you receive.

How the 2014 Sharpshooter feat applies to a firearm

Long range

Under the 2014 rules, a ranged weapon normally imposes disadvantage when you attack a target beyond its normal range, although you can still attack out to the weapon’s maximum range. Sharpshooter removes that long-range disadvantage for a qualifying ranged weapon attack. If a firearm’s entry lists normal and maximum ranges, use those numbers exactly; Sharpshooter does not let you attack beyond the maximum range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if a firearm has a normal range of 80 feet and a maximum range of 240 feet, a shot at 200 feet is normally made with disadvantage. The 2014 Sharpshooter long-range benefit removes that disadvantage. A shot at 300 feet is still outside the weapon’s maximum range and is not made legal by the feat.

Cover

The 2014 feat lets your ranged attacks ignore half cover and three-quarters cover. The attack still needs a legal line of effect, and total cover remains a separate obstacle. If the target is completely hidden behind an obstacle, the feat does not turn that target into an eligible target.

Cover is evaluated from the attacker’s position to the target. Moving five feet, changing elevation, or choosing a different firing angle can change the cover category before the attack is rolled. Sharpshooter removes the specified cover bonuses; it does not remove every environmental restriction in the scene.

The attack-roll penalty and extra damage

The 2014 version also allows a character to choose a penalty to the attack roll in exchange for extra damage when making an attack with a ranged weapon they are proficient with. A firearm can meet the weapon-type requirement, but proficiency still matters. If your character is not proficient with the particular firearm, do not assume this option is available merely because the weapon is ranged.

The choice is made before the attack roll. You decide separately for each qualifying attack, so one shot in a turn can use the option while another does not. The penalty applies to the attack roll, while the extra amount applies to the damage on a hit. It does not create an automatic hit, bypass cover beyond what the feat says, or allow a weapon attack when the firearm is out of ammunition or otherwise unusable.

What changes in the 2024 version

The 2024 Sharpshooter is a distinct feat entry, not an errata line that can be blended with the 2014 version. D&D Beyond’s discussion of the 2024 feat identifies benefits concerning long-range attacks, attacks made at close range, and cover, all framed around attacks with ranged weapons. That means a firearm classified as a ranged weapon is the correct category to examine, but the exact triggers and numerical effects must come from the 2024 Player’s Handbook your table is using.

Do not assume that a character using the 2024 feat automatically has every familiar 2014 benefit. In particular, do not carry over the 2014 attack-penalty damage option unless it appears in the current feat text. Conversely, a table using the 2014 feat should not add a 2024-only close-range benefit because the character owns a gun.

If your group allows material from both books, write the choice on the character sheet: “2014 Sharpshooter” or “2024 Sharpshooter.” Record the source book and edition beside it. That small notation prevents the most common argument at the table—remembering the name of the feat but not which version supplied the benefit.

A table procedure for ruling on any gun

  1. Name the rules version. Confirm whether the character is using the 2014 feat or the 2024 feat. If the campaign is using the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide and related rules, use the current replacement text adopted by the campaign.
  2. Read the firearm’s classification. The firearm must be listed as a ranged weapon for the normal Sharpshooter interpretation to apply. Do not infer the category from real-world terminology or from the weapon’s damage die.
  3. Confirm that the action is a weapon attack. Pulling the trigger or otherwise using the gun’s attack entry should produce a ranged weapon attack. A spell that merely looks like a bullet is a spell attack, not automatically a firearm attack.
  4. Check proficiency requirements. Some feat benefits, especially the 2014 attack-penalty damage option, require proficiency with the ranged weapon. Verify the character’s proficiency with that firearm or firearm group.
  5. Apply the firearm’s own properties. Range, ammunition, loading, reload limitations, misfire rules, actions required to operate the weapon, and setting-specific exceptions can all affect whether the attack can be made. Sharpshooter does not erase those properties unless its wording specifically says so.
  6. Resolve range and cover. Determine normal range, maximum range, and the target’s cover from the attacker’s position. Apply only the long-range, close-range, or cover benefits present in the chosen edition.
  7. Record a table ruling for unusual weapons. For a homebrew gun or an imported setting, write down whether it counts as a ranged weapon, what proficiency applies, and which feat version is in force. Use that ruling consistently for later attacks.

Firearm properties that Sharpshooter does not remove

Loading and ammunition

The 2014 Basic Rules distinguish weapon categories and explain properties such as range and loading. A firearm can have additional rules that limit how many attacks you can make, what action is needed to reload, or whether ammunition is available. Sharpshooter changes only the benefits stated in the feat; it does not automatically ignore the loading property, create ammunition, or shorten a reload.

Maximum range

Ignoring long-range disadvantage is not the same as increasing a gun’s maximum range. A weapon entry that gives two range values still controls the legal distance. If a firearm has a special range rule, that specific rule must be read alongside the feat.

Setting-specific firearm rules

Different D&D settings and supplements can present firearms with different properties or availability. A setting may add a misfire chance, special ammunition, reload actions, or restrictions on who is proficient. Those rules are not contradictions to the general Sharpshooter interaction; they are additional conditions on using that particular weapon.

Common edge cases

Firing a gun while an enemy is adjacent

For the 2014 feat, the relevant listed benefits are long-range attacks, cover, and the attack-roll penalty for extra damage. It does not, by itself, remove the normal close-range disadvantage that can apply when making a ranged attack while a hostile creature is within 5 feet. If the 2024 feat used by your table contains a close-range benefit, apply that current wording instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a firearm without proficiency

Lack of proficiency can affect the attack roll and can block a benefit that expressly requires proficiency. The fact that the weapon is a ranged weapon does not grant proficiency. Check the character’s class, background, feat, or other feature that supplies firearm proficiency.

Using a spell or a magical effect that resembles a gunshot

A spell attack is governed by spell rules, not by the firearm category, even if its visual description is a bullet or blast. Likewise, a magic item that produces a spell effect is not automatically a firearm. Ask what attack type the feature’s rules text creates.

Throwing a melee weapon

A melee weapon with the thrown property remains a melee weapon unless its rules say otherwise. Do not classify every attack made at a distance as a ranged weapon attack. Sharpshooter’s firearm interaction depends on the weapon’s rules category, not simply on the distance to the target.

Homebrew guns

For a homebrew firearm, the Dungeon Master should specify whether it is a ranged weapon, what proficiency applies, its normal and maximum ranges, and any loading or ammunition rules. If those details are missing, the table should resolve them before a character relies on the feat for a major attack.

Examples of rulings at the table

2014 character with a listed musket

The musket is presented as a firearm and ranged weapon. The character is proficient with it and fires at a target beyond normal range but within maximum range. The 2014 long-range benefit removes disadvantage. If the target has half or three-quarters cover, the feat’s cover benefit removes that cover bonus. The character may separately choose the attack-roll penalty for extra damage if that option is part of the adopted 2014 feat.

2014 character with an improvised “pistol”

If the Dungeon Master has not designated the improvised object as a ranged weapon, Sharpshooter does not automatically apply. The ruling must first establish what attack the object makes and whether the character is proficient. Calling an object a pistol in narrative description is not enough to give it firearm rules.

2024 character in a mixed-edition campaign

The player uses the 2024 Sharpshooter entry while the campaign still uses a firearm profile from an older supplement. The firearm’s classification and properties can remain relevant, but the feat’s benefits come from the 2024 text. The player should not add a 2014 benefit simply because another character at the table has the older feat.

When the answer is not D&D 5e

“Sharpshooter” is not a universal game term. In another tabletop RPG, a video game, or a house system, the ability may apply only to bows, only to a weapon tag named “rifle,” or only to a particular action. The D&D definition of “ranged weapon attack” cannot settle those questions.

To answer a non-D&D version accurately, identify the game, edition or patch, the exact Sharpshooter text, and the firearm’s rules entry. Without those details, the only reliable statement is that the D&D 5e ruling should not be transferred to that system.

Quick ruling checklist

  • Is the table using the 2014 or 2024 Sharpshooter?
  • Does the gun’s rules entry classify it as a ranged weapon?
  • Does firing it create a ranged weapon attack rather than a spell attack or another effect?
  • Is the character proficient if the selected benefit requires proficiency?
  • What are the firearm’s normal and maximum ranges?
  • Does the gun have loading, ammunition, reload, misfire, or other special properties?
  • Is the target benefiting from half, three-quarters, or total cover?
  • Has the Dungeon Master made a written ruling for any homebrew or mixed-edition element?

FAQ

Does Sharpshooter make every gun attack better?

No. It can modify the attacks and circumstances described by the feat, but it does not grant proficiency, ammunition, extra attacks, or immunity to every firearm limitation.

Can I use the 2014 -5 attack penalty with the 2024 feat?

Only if the 2024 feat text adopted by your table includes that option. The two entries are separate, so the 2014 benefit should not be imported by default.

Does Sharpshooter apply to a gun’s damage-over-time effect?

Only if that effect is part of a qualifying weapon attack and the feat’s wording reaches it. A separate ongoing effect, saving throw, or spell-like feature is not automatically modified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I show my Dungeon Master?

Show the firearm’s full rules entry, the exact edition of Sharpshooter, and the character’s proficiency source. Those three items usually resolve the classification question without relying on memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sharpshooter work with a firearm that has the loading property?

Yes, if the firearm is a ranged weapon, but Sharpshooter does not remove the loading property. Apply the firearm’s loading and reload rules separately.

Does Sharpshooter apply to a firearm spell or magical blast?

Not automatically. Determine whether the feature creates a ranged weapon attack or a spell attack; the visual appearance of a gunshot is not decisive.

Can a homebrew gun use Sharpshooter?

It can if the Dungeon Master classifies it as a ranged weapon and defines its proficiency and other properties. The table should record that ruling before play.
