What did Shawn Layden say about PlayStation going digital?
On The Expansion Pass podcast, Layden acknowledged the convenience of downloading games while questioning what players lose when physical copies disappear. VGC reported his comments on October 6, 2026. Layden was chairman of Sony’s worldwide studios group when he left Sony in 2019.
He argued that physical buyers may be a smaller group but can be especially committed collectors. “We are an inquisitive collecting sort of people, and we like to show off our stuff,” he said. The point is not simply that a disc can be displayed: a physical copy can also be resold, changing how a buyer thinks about the purchase.
Layden illustrated the potential audience split by saying, “Maybe 80% of the people download, and 20% don’t, or whatever that breakdown is going to be.” That was a rough example, not a published PlayStation sales statistic.

Why does Layden connect physical games with ownership?
Layden’s concern is about the consumer’s experience and perception of ownership. “If you can’t sell a thing, that means you don’t own a thing,” he said. He added, “If you’re buying access, that doesn’t quite sound as sexy, to be honest.”
His contrast is between a resalable physical copy and digital access as buyers may understand it. Those remarks do not settle the legal status of digital game licenses; they express Layden’s view of how the formats feel to consumers.

What is the reported disc-production plan, and when would it begin?
VGC reported on October 6, 2026 that Sony plans to stop making game discs starting in 2028. The reporting cited here does not include a primary Sony announcement, so the timing and plan should be treated as reported rather than as a confirmed company statement. The available reports also do not establish the plan’s full scope or whether there would be exceptions.
That distinction matters: Layden questioned the reported direction, but did not claim to know Sony’s internal financial calculations. In an earlier Eurogamer interview published July 3, 2026, he said such a decision was likely driven by financial calculations. That was his judgment, not verified information about Sony’s reasoning.

How did Layden’s earlier comments address internet access and resale?
In the earlier interview, Layden recalled considering broadband availability while at PlayStation and pointed to people who rely on physical games because they lack internet access. That is context about the concerns he had considered, not a current measurement of internet access or a description of the reported plan’s exceptions.
He also said he no longer viewed the second-hand market as a major business concern. That, too, was his assessment rather than a statement of Sony policy. The debate he raises spans convenience, collecting, resale, internet dependence and buyers’ sense of ownership; his comments do not provide a full technical or legal comparison of the formats.

Can players still buy physical PlayStation games?
The reports discussed here describe a reported plan to stop disc production starting in 2028. They do not establish the complete scope of that plan or answer what physical PlayStation games will remain available, where, or for how long. They therefore do not support a blanket claim that physical games are already unavailable or that every route to buying them will end on a particular date.
