Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, write down:
- The exact program that shows the error
- Whether it appears at startup or only when opening one old application
- Your Windows version and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The complete message, such as “shdoclc.dll was not found” or “the specified module could not be found”
- Whether
shdoclc.dllexists in%SystemRoot%System32 - Whether Windows Security recently quarantined or removed anything

shdoclc.dll is a genuine Microsoft system DLL associated with the legacy Internet Explorer and Windows Shell document and control components. It is most strongly associated with Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and older Internet Explorer installations, so an error on Windows 10 or Windows 11 often involves an old application or damaged legacy files rather than a missing modern runtime.
What the shdoclc.dll error means
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because shdoclc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because shdoclc.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting shdoclc.dll.”
- “Error loading shdoclc.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “shdoclc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “shdoclc.dll is corrupted.”
These messages do not all prove that the DLL itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the program is missing. A “bad image” message may indicate that the file is damaged, from the wrong Windows or Internet Explorer version, or incompatible with the process loading it.

Microsoft documents the file in:
%SystemRoot%System32Shdoclc.dll
Microsoft also labels it “not registerable.” That matters because regsvr32 shdoclc.dll is not a valid repair for this file.

Look for Shdoclc.dll. Windows is not case-sensitive here, so shdoclc.dll and Shdoclc.dll refer to the same filename.
Right-click the file, select Properties, and check the Details tab if it is present. Do not treat a file merely having the right name as proof that it is genuine. The documented Windows XP-era copies are 32-bit, and Microsoft records versions including 6.0.2900.5512, 6.0.2900.2180, and 6.0.2800.1106.
Next, identify the program that launches the error:
- Close the error.
- Start the affected application again.
- Note whether every program fails or only one old program.
- Check the application’s installation folder and shortcut target.
- If the error occurs immediately after Windows starts, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps for an old browser helper, shell extension, or legacy application.
If only one old application fails while Windows works normally, repair or reinstall that application before changing system files. If several Windows components fail, continue with system repair.
2. Check Windows Security quarantine
Malware removal can leave a legitimate system file missing, but do not assume that happened. Confirm it in Windows Security.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand recent detections and look for an item mentioning
shdoclc.dll, an Internet Explorer component, or a file in%SystemRoot%System32. - Read the detection name and file path.
Only restore a quarantined file after verifying that it is the genuine Microsoft file and that the detection is a false positive. If the detection is legitimate, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and repair Windows or the affected application instead. Restoring a malicious file can recreate the original problem.
Microsoft has documented malware that referenced @shdoclc.dll in the registry. That does not mean every missing-file error is malware-related, but it makes Protection History worth checking when the problem began immediately after a security cleanup.
3. Repair Windows files with DISM and SFC
This is the correct first system repair for supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until the verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the affected program.
Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still fails, use recovery options rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: the problem may belong to the old application, a missing dependency, or a version mismatch.
- DISM cannot find source files: use a matching Windows installation source with the documented
/Sourceand/LimitAccessoptions. The source must match the installed Windows version.
The exact source syntax depends on the edition, build, and installation media, so do not copy a command designed for a different Windows release.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and an application-specific reinstall remains the definitive fix when only one program is affected.
4. Repair the old application
If Windows passes its integrity checks and one program still reports shdoclc.dll, repair that program.
Use the available option in this order:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s settings.
- For older desktop software, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the program and choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the application from its original developer installer or installation media.
If the program has a launcher with Verify files, Scan and repair, or a similar option, run that before reinstalling. Do not copy shdoclc.dll into the application folder unless the original developer specifically provides that file as part of its installer.
A 32-bit program may depend on legacy components even when it is running on 64-bit Windows. The folder name System32 is counterintuitive on 64-bit Windows and should not be used alone to determine file architecture. Do not copy an unverified DLL into both System32 and SysWOW64.

shdoclc.dll is associated with older Internet Explorer releases rather than a current Visual C++ or DirectX runtime.
If the affected computer is Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or another system retaining an old Internet Explorer installation:
- Check the Windows version by pressing
Win+R, typingwinver, and pressing Enter. - Open Internet Explorer and select Help > About Internet Explorer, if it launches.
- Record the Internet Explorer version and language.
- Use the matching original Windows or Internet Explorer installation media.
- Apply only the Microsoft package intended for that exact Windows and Internet Explorer combination.
- Restart after installation.
Microsoft’s Download Center contains legacy Internet Explorer 8 updates for Windows XP SP3, including KB2925418 and KB4018271. These are security updates, not standalone shdoclc.dll downloads, and they are not guaranteed fixes outside the matching Windows XP and Internet Explorer environment.

Do not mix a localized or differently versioned Shdoclc.dll with another Internet Explorer installation. An old application may simply be incompatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11, where Internet Explorer 8 is obsolete and no longer supported.
On Windows 10, Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off may show legacy Internet Explorer components. On Windows 11, do not expect this to restore an old Internet Explorer installation. Use Windows repair or replace the incompatible application instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Check for a missing dependency
If shdoclc.dll is present but the message says “the specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency loaded by the application.
Record:
- The complete error text
- The executable that launches it
- The DLL path shown in the error, if any
- Whether the application is 32-bit
- Whether the error began after an update, cleanup, or malware removal
Then use the application’s official repair or reinstall process. Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, or graphics drivers merely because a DLL error appears. No reliable Microsoft evidence identifies those packages as suppliers of shdoclc.dll.
7. Update drivers only when diagnostics point to a device problem
Driver repair is not a file-specific solution for shdoclc.dll. Consider it only when the same incident includes display failures, hardware errors, crashes, or a device entry marked with a warning symbol.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo check:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the reported problem.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers when manually checking many hardware vendors is impractical; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Do not use a driver update as a substitute for reinstalling the application that actually reports shdoclc.dll.
8. Use System Restore or Windows recovery
Escalate when DISM and SFC cannot repair the file, several system DLLs are affected, or the problem began after a failed update or malware cleanup.
System Restore
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Confirm the restore point and follow the prompts.
System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, installed programs, and updates while preserving personal files. It may remove software installed after the selected restore point.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Back up important data first. If the option is unavailable, use the appropriate Windows recovery or in-place repair media for the installed release.

Why you should not download shdoclc.dll
Random DLL sites can provide malware, the wrong language, the wrong architecture, or a file from another Internet Explorer build. A copied DLL can also hide the real cause, such as a damaged Windows component, incomplete application installation, or missing dependency.
Use these sources instead:
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- Original Windows or Internet Explorer installation media
- The affected application’s official installer
- Microsoft Download Center packages that match the exact legacy environment
Do not run regsvr32 shdoclc.dll. Microsoft marks this file as not registerable, so registration will not repair it.
FAQ
Is shdoclc.dll a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No. It is associated with legacy Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer components. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a file-specific fix.
Should I copy it into SysWOW64?
No. Do not copy an unverified file into either system directory. The documented copies are x86, but the correct location and version depend on the Windows and application environment.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is this a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 component?
The file is strongly associated with older Windows and Internet Explorer generations. On current Windows, an error may come from an old application, damaged legacy files, or a dependency rather than a normal current component.
What if SFC cannot repair it?
Run DISM first, repeat SFC after restarting, and check whether DISM needs a matching installation source. If repairs still fail, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
Should I reinstall Internet Explorer?
Only when the computer actually uses a matching legacy Internet Explorer environment. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, repairing or replacing the old application is usually more appropriate than installing an obsolete browser component.
What information is useful when asking for help?
Provide the Windows version, Internet Explorer version if relevant, exact error text, affected program, whether shdoclc.dll exists in %SystemRoot%System32, whether the program is 32-bit, and whether security software recently removed anything.
