SHEEPO is a single-player metroidvania platform game built around exploration, precise platforming, and transforming into creatures—not conventional combat. Review scores are positive overall, though the critic sample is small and some reviewers point to its short length and familiar encounters. Here’s what the game offers and what its ratings can—and can’t—tell you.

What kind of game is SHEEPO?

Developed and published by Kyle Thompson, SHEEPO launched on Steam for PC on August 26, 2020. It is a single-player metroidvania in which you explore interconnected areas, collect creatures’ unhatched eggs, and gain the ability to shape-shift into those creatures. Their forms provide ways to navigate the world and reach new places. The official SHEEPO press kit describes it as a “quirky pacifistic metroidvania.”

Does SHEEPO have combat?

Steam describes the game as having no standard combat. Its emphasis is on movement and exploration rather than fighting through enemies. That makes it a natural fit for players seeking a more pacifist take on the metroidvania format, but less suitable if combat is a central reason you play the genre.

What do SHEEPO reviews say?

The ratings available on major storefronts and aggregators lean positive, but they come from different audiences and sample sizes. Steam’s all-time user review summary showed 96% positive from 551 reviews when retrieved on October 8, 2026. Metacritic showed a 75 Metascore from five critic reviews and a 6.9 user score from 11 ratings on the same date. Those Metacritic samples are limited; they are not directly comparable to Steam’s larger user-review pool. All figures can change.

Source and rating pool Snapshot on October 8, 2026 How to read it
Steam, all-time user reviews 96% positive from 551 reviews A storefront summary of user reviews; the percentage and review count can change.
Metacritic, critic reviews 75 Metascore from 5 reviews A small critic sample, not a broad or definitive consensus.
Metacritic, user ratings 6.9 from 11 ratings A separate, small user-rating pool; it should not be combined with Steam’s score.
PlayStation Store, US storefront ratings 4.39 out of 5 from 100 ratings A separate storefront snapshot; the rating and count can change.

Review excerpts point to the game’s art style, tight platforming, and balanced difficulty curve as strengths. The caveats are scope and variety: one critic notes its short length, while another describes some encounters as formulaic. Metacritic reproduces Screen Rant’s praise for the game’s immersive, artful feel within a small scope. These are reviewers’ assessments, not a guarantee that every player will have the same experience.

Where can you play SHEEPO?

The sources establish digital versions on PC through Steam and on PS4 and PS5 through the PlayStation Store. The PlayStation listing says a purchase entitles the customer to download both console versions. The available listings establish digital formats; they do not establish a physical edition.

The sources do not establish platform-specific performance or feature differences, so there is no supported basis here for recommending one version over another on technical grounds.

Who is SHEEPO best suited to?

  • Consider it if you enjoy metroidvania exploration, movement-focused platforming, and discovering new traversal abilities.
