Shenmue III Reviews: Is the Slow-Paced Sequel Worth Playing?

Critics split on Shenmue III’s deliberate routines: they create atmosphere for some players and dated friction for others. Here’s who is most likely to enjoy the sequel.

Shenmue III received a mixed critical response: reviewers praised its atmosphere, detail, and familiar routines, while criticizing its dated mechanics and deliberate pace. It is most likely to appeal to players who want another chapter in the series’ distinctive style—not newcomers looking for a brisk, modern action-adventure.

What reviewers say about Shenmue III

The critical response is divided over what the game’s old-school design means. For some reviewers, spending time on routines and details is part of the appeal; for others, the slow pace and dated mechanics make the experience feel out of step with newer action-adventure games.

At the time of access in 2026, Metacritic’s PS4 page showed a 67/100 Metascore based on 82 critic reviews: 30 positive, 41 mixed, and 7 negative. That is a snapshot of the release-era review aggregation, not a permanent score; totals can change. Metacritic’s Shenmue III page provides the current-at-access aggregation.

Individual scores are separate judgments, not components to combine into a new average. For example, GameSpot’s review scored the game 5/10. GameSpot’s review is one publication’s assessment, while Metacritic aggregates reviews from multiple critics.

Shenmue III - Day One Edition (PS4)
  • One of the most anticipated video games in history, from legendary game developer, Yu Suzuki. Epic adventure: Immerse yourself in the stunning and magical world of shenmue
  • breathing, living world: Explore inside and outside buildings, take on part-time jobs, play Arcade games, and interact with local inhabitants of beautiful Chinese locales.
  • martial arts action: put your training and upgraded skills to the test via intense free battles and intense quick time events.
  • solve the mystery: converse with a colorful and diverse cast of characters and follow leads from those who hold the answers to the mysterious Phoenix mirror

What critics liked

Atmosphere and attention to detail

Positive reviews valued the game’s sense of place and its careful attention to everyday activity. The routines that can feel like friction to one player can make the world feel lived-in to another.

Relationships and series identity

Review excerpts collected on Metacritic also highlight the relationship-focused storytelling and the appeal of returning to the series’ characteristic rhythms. The case for Shenmue III is strongest when its deliberate structure feels like continuity rather than an obstacle.

Shenmue III (PS4)
  • Epic Adventure - Immerse yourself in the stunning and magical world of Shenmue
  • Breathing, Living World - Explore inside and outside buildings, take on part-time jobs, play arcade games, and interact with local inhabitants of beautiful Chinese locales
  • Martial Arts Action - Put your training and upgraded skills to the test via intense free battles and intense Quick Time Events
  • Solve the Mystery - Converse with a colourful and diverse cast of characters and follow leads from those who hold the answers to the mysterious Phoenix Mirror

Why reviews were mixed

Slow pacing and old-fashioned mechanics

The central criticism is that the game retains a style many reviewers found dated, without adopting conveniences or conventions that have become common in newer action-adventure games. Its pace is intentional, but that does not make it a fit for everyone.

A continuing story rather than a quick, self-contained adventure

The game continues Ryo Hazuki’s search for answers about the Phoenix Mirror. Players wanting a fast-moving plot or a story that stands entirely on its own may find the narrative less satisfying than returning fans do.

Is Shenmue III worth playing?

It is a better fit if you enjoyed Shenmue I and II and want a continuation that preserves their unhurried, detail-oriented approach. If you are choosing based on contemporary open-world expectations—quick progression, brisk action, or streamlined routines—the critical complaints point to likely sources of frustration.

  • Consider it if atmosphere, everyday detail, and a familiar series structure matter more to you than pace.
  • Be cautious if slow routines or old-school mechanics tend to feel like busywork.
  • Do not expect a fast, self-contained adventure designed primarily for newcomers.

Is Shenmue III good for newcomers?

It can be played as an action-adventure, but its appeal depends partly on whether the player enjoys the series’ distinctive rhythms and wants to follow Ryo’s continuing journey. New players should not treat it as a representative example of a modern, fast-paced open-world game. The available review evidence does not establish that prior games are a strict gameplay requirement; it does show why series context and affection for the earlier games can matter to enjoyment.

What game and editions are listed?

Shenmue III is a 2019 single-player action-adventure starring Ryo Hazuki and set in rural China. The official US PlayStation Store description highlights investigation, training, gambling, arcade games, and part-time work. It lists a PS4 Standard Edition, a Digital Deluxe Edition, and downloadable add-ons; the page identifies November 19, 2019 as the PS4 release date. Check the US PlayStation Store listing for the current edition details, price, and availability in that region.

GameSpot lists PC as an original platform and gives November 19, 2019 as the game’s first release date. GameSpot’s game listing provides that catalog information. Prices and availability can vary by platform and region, so check the relevant store before buying.

How do player ratings compare with critic reviews?

The PlayStation Store displayed an average player rating of 4.54/5 from 2,540 ratings at access in 2026. This is a platform user-rating snapshot, not critic consensus, and it should not be merged with Metacritic’s critic score or GameSpot’s individual review score. The PlayStation Store listing shows its current-at-access rating and count.

What about Shenmue III Enhanced?

A secondary reference reports that Shenmue III Enhanced has been announced for newer platforms and is planned for late 2026. That timing does not establish that the edition is available, and the publisher should be checked for confirmed platforms and release information before making a purchase decision. The Shenmue official site is the place to look for publisher updates.
