What SHIFU: Traffic Masters is
SHIFU: Traffic Masters is an unreleased, single-player driving and simulation game from solo developer Boxy.Poly. It is set in a VHS-tinted version of northern China during the 1990s, where the traffic is made up of ordinary workhorse cars rather than exotic supercars. The design draws inspiration from 1990s open-world driving games such as Midtown Madness and Driver, but its focus is everyday driving, deliveries, public transport, and the personality of slow, period-correct vehicles.

The Steam listing describes an open city, several kinds of work, changing road conditions, and free-roam driving between jobs. Its central idea is summed up by the line Drive slow cars fast.
That does not mean every activity is a race. It means learning how to carry momentum, brake early, thread narrow streets, and make an underpowered vehicle useful.

The game is planned for PC on Steam and is listed as fully bilingual in English and Simplified Chinese. The developer has described the project as a recreation of the humble daily cars and living-city driving remembered from 1990s China, so the setting and vehicles are part of the simulation rather than decoration.

Your first steps in the city
1. Spend your first minutes in free-roam
Do not accept the hardest job immediately. Between jobs, the whole city is available for free-roam, giving you a place to learn without a timetable, fare, cargo load, or suspect to chase. Drive a short loop around the starting area and deliberately test:
- How much road you need to stop from different speeds.
- How tightly the vehicle turns at low speed.
- Where major intersections, alleys, bridges, and narrow lanes connect.
- How traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians react when you change lanes or cut across a junction.
- How the same route feels when weather or road conditions change.
Use this time to build a mental map rather than to search for the fastest line. A route that looks obvious on a map may become difficult when a long bus has to turn, a taxi passenger is waiting, or traffic blocks the main road.
2. Learn smooth inputs before chasing speed
SHIFU’s jobs punish abrupt driving in different ways. A truck can throw cargo into traffic if you brake too hard. A taxi passenger can leave if the ride becomes too rough. A bus combines a large turning radius with a timetable. Make gentle steering, progressive braking, and early decisions your default habits.

- Brake in a straight line. Start earlier than you think you need to, especially with cargo or a bus.
- Turn once, smoothly. Repeated corrections are more likely to unsettle a load or make a large vehicle clip a curb.
- Accelerate after the vehicle is pointed down the next street. This protects passengers and keeps the tires from fighting the steering.
3. Take low-pressure work first
Cargo, taxi, and bus jobs are the most useful introduction because they teach control while making you pay attention to the road. Police pursuits and street races add pressure before you have learned the city. Treat the early jobs as handling lessons, not as tests of how quickly you can finish.
How the driving model changes your decisions
The city is not a static race track. Traffic density, cyclists, pedestrians, weather, and road conditions alter the space available to you and the way a vehicle behaves. A route practiced in clear conditions may require earlier braking or a different line when the surface and visibility change.
Vehicle choice matters as well. The game uses 1980s and 1990s daily drivers with different weights and personalities. A slower workhorse may take longer to accelerate but can teach you to preserve momentum. An underpowered vehicle is not necessarily the wrong choice; adapting your speed and route is part of the intended challenge.

Street circuits reward knowledge of alleys and shortcuts, while the developer has described both a relaxed cruise mood and more focused mission moods. That suggests you should learn the same district at two speeds: first as a resident who knows where the roads go, and later as a driver who must make decisions under pressure.

Truck cargo: protect the load before the clock
Cargo work is the clearest lesson in why SHIFU is not simply an arcade racer. The load has physical behavior: abrupt braking can send watermelons into traffic. Your objective is therefore twofold—reach the destination and arrive with the cargo under control.
A reliable cargo routine
- Survey the first few turns. Before moving quickly, identify where you will need to slow for intersections, narrow lanes, or merging traffic.
- Build speed gradually. A heavy truck takes planning to slow down, and a late correction can be worse than a slow departure.
- Brake earlier than a passenger car would. Use a straight approach to each junction and leave a buffer for traffic.
- Keep steering corrections small. If you miss a turn, continuing around the block is safer than cutting sharply across a lane.
- Check the road ahead, not only the destination marker. Traffic and pedestrians can turn a clear-looking delivery into a sudden stop.
The cargo job is complete only when your driving is consistent. A fast delivery that damages the load teaches less than a slower run in which you learn where to brake and how wide the truck needs to turn.
Taxi fares: speed without making the passenger leave
Taxi work asks for a different compromise. You still need to reach the destination efficiently, but rough driving can end the fare. The best taxi driver is not the one who takes every corner at maximum speed; it is the one who preserves a steady ride while avoiding delays.
- Choose a clean line through intersections. A short route that requires several emergency corrections is worse than a slightly longer route you can drive smoothly.
- Brake before the passenger can feel the corner. Late braking followed by a sharp turn is the pattern most likely to make the ride uncomfortable.
- Use free-roam to learn pickup and drop-off approaches. Knowing which side of a street gives you room to stop prevents last-second swerves.
- Accept modest speeds. Maintaining momentum without abrupt acceleration is more valuable than repeatedly rushing and recovering.
Taxi jobs are a good bridge between free-roam and timed work because they make traffic awareness meaningful without requiring you to chase another vehicle.
Bus routes: plan for the vehicle’s size
Bus work combines a large vehicle, narrow streets, and a timetable. The challenge is not only finding the stops; it is positioning the bus early enough that the entire vehicle can complete the turn without striking obstacles or blocking the road.

How to practice a route
- Drive the route once without worrying about the timetable. Note every narrow turn, stop, and section where oncoming traffic leaves little room.
- Approach turns from the correct side of the street. Give the rear of the bus space instead of turning from a position that forces a sharp correction.
- Brake before the stop, not at it. A long vehicle needs time to settle, and a smooth stop is easier to repeat.
- Leave a margin around cyclists and pedestrians. Their reactions are part of the living traffic environment.
- Only then run the timetable. Once the route is familiar, you can improve your pace without guessing where the bus will fit.
A bus route rewards preparation more than aggression. Learning the geometry of the streets first turns the timetable into a pacing problem rather than a navigation emergency.
Police pursuits: use the city, not horsepower
Police work puts you in an underpowered squad car and asks you to chase suspects through traffic. Because the vehicle lacks overwhelming acceleration, the pursuit is about anticipating where the suspect will go and using the road network intelligently.
Keep your eyes several seconds ahead. Moving into the correct lane before an intersection is safer than attempting to cross traffic after the suspect has already turned. If the main road becomes crowded, your knowledge of alleys and side streets can close the distance without requiring a faster car. Free-roam practice should include alternate routes around major junctions so that you have a plan when traffic breaks your line.
Do not treat every pursuit as a license to drive recklessly. The same smooth braking and early turning that protect cargo also help you maintain control when the chase becomes congested.
Street racing: win with route knowledge
Street races emphasize shortcuts and alley knowledge rather than raw power. Modest vehicles make momentum management important: losing speed in a hairpin or arriving at a corner too fast can erase the advantage of a shortcut.
Prepare a circuit before racing it
- Drive the course in free-roam and identify every alley entrance and exit.
- Mark corners where braking must begin before the visible turn.
- Look for junctions where traffic can force you to abandon the ideal line.
- Practice rejoining the main road after a shortcut so you do not lose time with a late merge.
- Use the race to refine one section at a time instead of restarting after every small mistake.
The fastest line is not always the shortest line. A route that preserves speed and avoids a risky crossing can beat a nominal shortcut that requires a full stop.

Build a route notebook in your head
Choose a few landmarks and connect them with multiple paths: a main road, an alley-heavy shortcut, and a safer route with wider turns. Repeat those paths in different weather and road conditions. This creates useful options for every job type:
- A cargo run can use the wider route when the load is vulnerable.
- A taxi can use the smoothest route to protect passenger comfort.
- A bus can avoid a turn that is technically possible but too narrow for a reliable timetable.
- A pursuit or race can switch to alleys when the main road is blocked.
Pay attention to how traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians react. Their presence changes the timing of a turn and the amount of stopping space available. Treat the city as a moving system rather than a collection of fixed obstacles.
Choosing a vehicle for the job
The period setting includes everyday cars from the 1980s and 1990s, and each vehicle has its own weight and personality. Match the vehicle to the task instead of assuming the quickest accelerator is always best.

Steam currently lists SHIFU: Traffic Masters as a Windows PC game that is not yet available for purchase. The requirements below are the current listing and may change before launch.

The developer’s current update targets early 2027 and says controller support was being added. A separate developer reply said wheel support was not yet included. Both control support and the release window can change before launch, so do not treat a racing wheel as a requirement.

Steam currently shows a planned release in Q1 2027, and the game is not yet purchasable. That makes the listed hardware, controller plans, and final feature set provisional.
