Critics were broadly positive about Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch listing showed an 83 Metascore, labeled “Generally Favorable,” from 26 critic reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026. Review excerpts praise its polished, deep, replayable dungeon systems, while warning that the game is demanding and does relatively little to reinvent the series formula.
What is the critics’ verdict?
The strongest case for the game is refinement rather than reinvention: critics describe a well-polished take on the series’ turn-based dungeon exploration, with enough challenge and content to keep players returning. The central reservation is that its difficulty can be a steep adjustment, particularly for newcomers, and its ideas are familiar to the series.
Metacritic’s Switch listing displayed an 83 Metascore from 26 critic reviews on October 8, 2026. That is a dated snapshot of one platform’s aggregation, not a permanent score or a rating for every edition. Both the score and review count can change.
What did critics praise?
Refined dungeon systems
Reviews highlight a familiar loop of preparing for a run, managing resources, and adapting as a dungeon changes. Worth Playing’s excerpt called the game “easy to pick up, difficult to master, and addictive enough that you keep coming back.” GLHF on Sports Illustrated similarly praised how well the game plays and how closely it refines the series’ signature gameplay.

Depth and replay value
The changing dungeons and substantial challenge give the adventure staying power. RPGFan described it as a strong entry point for new players with enough demanding content for returning fans, while RPGamer praised its “thoroughly enjoyable and constantly engaging adventure.” Metacritic excerpts also point to unlockable dungeons and challenges as part of the game’s breadth.
How difficult is it for newcomers?
Expect a real learning curve, not a gentle introduction to roguelikes. RPGFan’s excerpt presents the game as a good place to begin the Shiren series, but GLHF on Sports Illustrated calls it “brutal” and says total newcomers may find it tough to adapt. Those views can coexist: the game offers tools and information to help players learn, but it still expects them to make careful decisions and accept a punishing challenge.

Its online rescue feature offers one way to recover from a collapse: players can ask others for help and resume without losing progress, according to the publisher. That assistance does not remove the underlying difficulty, but it can soften the cost of a failed run.
Does it bring anything new to the series?
Limited novelty is the clearest caveat in the available review excerpts. GLHF on Sports Illustrated says the game does not do anything particularly fresh or new for the series, even while praising its execution. The better expectation is a polished, substantial return to Shiren’s established strengths—not a radical redesign of the roguelike formula.

They travel to Serpentcoil Island after a vision of a girl in distress.
