Shoresy: Legends of the North is a hockey RPG centered on the Shoresy universe, a story campaign and local multiplayer; EA SPORTS NHL 26 is the current EA NHL game, built around NHL players, career play and modes such as HUT Seasons. They are not interchangeable hockey simulations: the better fit depends on whether you want franchise characters and a group-friendly arcade-style experience or NHL-focused gameplay systems.
How the games are built differently
Shoresy: Legends of the North takes its setting and characters from the Shoresy franchise and adds RPG progression and a narrative quest. NHL 26 focuses on the licensed NHL experience, with player-specific traits, career progression and competitive modes. That difference in purpose is more useful than treating the two titles as direct simulation rivals.

What you do in Shoresy: Legends of the North
Story Mode
The Steam listing describes the game as a “pick-up-and-play hockey RPG” and calls it “a love letter to the golden age of sports games.” In Story Mode, you create a skater, develop stats, unlock gear, travel and face bosses in an original story alongside Shoresy. The official Shoresy game page presents it as a modern take on classic hockey games, with Blueberry Bulldogs hockey, hits, goals, fights and chirps; that is franchise marketing, rather than an independent assessment. Shinny Mode and local play
Shinny Mode supports competitive and cooperative local multiplayer. Players draft familiar characters, with a fight meter and power-ups adding to the matches. Steam lists shared/split-screen PvP and co-op, as well as Steam Remote Play Together and controller support. NHL player identity and gameplay systems
EA describes ICE-Q 2.0 as using NHL EDGE data to inform player attributes and tendencies, including skating and shooting traits. EA also highlights an upgraded goalie crease-control system. The US Xbox Store listing identifies Xbox Series X|S but displays October 19, 2026 as its release date. - Choose Shoresy: Legends of the North if you want Shoresy’s characters, an original story with skater progression, or the listed local Shinny options.
- Choose NHL 26 if your priority is EA’s current NHL game, its NHL EDGE-informed systems, Be A Pro or HUT Seasons.
- Check platform availability before buying: Shoresy’s Steam listing is for PC, while its US Xbox listing shows a future release date; NHL 26’s announced platforms are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
